Tonight at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden, J Will will join a celebrity cast of sorts in a 60-meter race designed to demonstrate the "universality" of speed across sports. He will race Anthony Dorsett, Jr., Jacoby Jones, and a few others. The race is scheduled to go off at 6:45 p.m. or so. Coverage on ESPN2 runs from 8-10 tonight.

Other Duke athletes at the prestigious event include current track team member Curtis Beach, competing against some of the best multi-eventers of the world, and former Duke pole vault star Jillian Schwartz, who apparently competes for Israel these days after representing the United States several times in the past.

Unfortunately, Jay came in dead last, by a large margin.

still admirable....working with bionic pelvis and legs to some degree.
Given where he was after the accident, I would say miraculous!

He must have pulled up. He is not that much slower.

He had a noticeable hitch in his gait. He was out slightly slower than the others and was not putting out his hardest throughout the race (IMHO) since it was obvious he was not competitive with the others; I wouldn't say that was pulling up. Jogged through the wire. Slowest competitors were in outside lanes (he had lane one).

Our Jay was a good sport to participate in an event where he was obviously over-matched given his state of fitness, but he smiled throughout the experience.

Yes, he introduced himself as the "Charles Barkley" of the race, and while he was representing basketball he also seemed more clearly to be representing ESPN. So I think he was running as much or more as a good sport (which he was) than as a legitimate contender.

Well, kind of OT but I remember some outstanding indoor track and field meets in Detroit when I was a little girl. So exciting!

Weezie:

The 1970s "How fast can I run from Detroit to the suburbs while bricks are being hurled at me" race is not technically a track and field meet - though it does combine elements of both track and field.

Curtis Beach, the only collegian and three years younger (at 20) than the next competitor, finished fifth and last in the Millrose Multi Challenge. He was second in the high jump at 6-8 3/4 (lost to winner Ashton Eaton on fewer misses) but last in the other two events. Results are here (http://www.flashresults.com/2011_Meets/indoor/01-28-Millrose/Multi.htm).

Jillian Schwartz was also fifth and last in the pole vault, clearing 13-1.

I guess the Duke athletes were in really great company but didn't actually beat anyone. It will be interesting to see how Curtis improves in the next few years in the strength events.
