View Full Version : Is 2011 the year that Clemson finally wins in CH? (Poll Added! Poll Is Closed!)

1926. Silent Cal is in the WH; alcohol is prohibited; Henry Ford initiates the 5 day, 40 hr workweek. Goddard is testing his first liquid fuel rockets. And Clemson visits UNC for the first time and loses by 30.

85 years is a long time. 55 losses-and of course the tigers had their best chance since the Doh years to beat UNC last year. But they've reeled off 8 consecutive wins, including a pretty decisive 15 point win vs GaT, since their close consecutive road losses in Columbia and Tallahassee.

Is this finally the year?

If VaTech couldn't, you think Clemson can? You never know, but I find VaTech to be better than Clemson.

Well, they may have had their best chance to beat UNC last year. And they did so convincingly: 83-64. But they definitely didn't have their best chance to beat UNC at Chapel Hill last year, since they didn't play at Chapel Hill last year.

I haven't seen Clemson this year, but they don't seem to be as good as they were last year (they don't have a replacement for Booker and their backcourt looks the same). I'm not saying it can't happen, but I certainly won't be predicting a Clemson win.

Julio teases Klemnop with such thoughts in his front page article this morning. Klemnop knows better. The chances of him streaking down Franklin St (or just sitting on the Well as he claims his promise was) on Tuesday night? Very, very slim. But Klemnop, a bunch of us will still come bail you out if you do! Promise!

For the record the original promise was, "I'll hang nekid from the sun dial in front of the Planeterium the day Clemson ever beats UNC in Chapel Hill." For those with a bit of Chapel Hill geography this is essentially being nekid on Franklin Street as the aforementioned sun dial is viewable, unobstructed, from the road.

I don't think anyone should be holding their breath this year. Better Clemson teams have gone to Chapel Hill to play worse UNC teams and not been able to turn the trick.

While UNC did just lose a head-scratching game to GaTech, it was a road game in the ACC. And, as was discussed in the front page article, UNC wasn't really playing inspried leading up to that game...which can create a perfect storm when you come up against an opponent you perceive to be much worse that you in an environemnet much more difficult than you expect. I'd guess that the Heels come out with plenty of fire on Tuesday night.

On the plus side it will be UNC's 3rd game in five days. However Ol' Roy chooses to motivate them he's got to be careful not to run their legs out from under them.

Clemson's problem will be dealing with UNC's size. After Jerai Grant we don't have anyone that's a legitimate inside threat. Baby Booker (Devin) has the size and length...but nowhere near the Beast tenacity that his (smaller) brother had for banging around. And Milton Jennings, while he's trying to become more of an inside presence, just doesn't have the bulk or experience to produce inside on a regular basis.

The Tigers do seem to be getting the hang of Brad Brownell's motion offense. On days when the open shots that are available are falling (see 2nd half vs. GaTech 9-9 on 3s) the offense looks pretty damn good. But when the shots aren't falling it's ugly. And more times than not it's been ugly. In Oliver Purnell's press you could always count on a flurry of points once or twice a game that came from the pressure. Points don't come in flurries any more. They come from methodically grinding out the possession...and when the possessions end empty too often then the bottom falls out.

It is interesting to note that the Tigers have improved defensively under Coach Brownell. I'm no Xs-and-Os guy but I hear that he's tightened up the on-ball techniques (which Clemson excelled at under OP) and vastly improved the off-ball/help techniques. He's left little doubt that he's a much better teacher of the game than OP and the players do seem to be responding to that after a period of adjustment in Nov./Dec. But he's at least a couple of competent shooters away from being able to run his system effectively.

Bottom line: Clemson at UNC is the closest thing to a sure bet that there ever was. I gave up getting myself emotionally invested in this game a long time ago. I don't even think of it as a game anymore. It's really just a circus side show. We know we're going to get cheated by paying our dollar to look behind the curtain...but we pay the dollar anyway.

So you won't be in chapel hill at game time on Tuesday night? Will you drive up immediately after you beat them? How long will it take you to get there? PM me your cell phone number and I'll call you so you'll have mine and we can coordinate video cameras and bail money, etc.! http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/4.gif http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gifhttp://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gifhttp://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gif

For the first time in a LOOOOONG time I'll actually be in the Carolinas during the game. Should the unthinkable happen it'll take me a little bit under four hours to get to Chapel Hill. Game should end around 10:15. That puts me on the sun dial around 2:30a.

I was laughing so hard my wife thought about calling for the guys with the straight jackets. Let's hope Klem get's the chance to get on that sun dial. That would make my day, month and year. Clemson owns the ACC's longest active winninbg streak (8 games -- nobody else has won more than two straight) and has the second best overall record in the league (13-4 ... just ahead of BC and FSU at 13-5).

To be fair, that winninbg streak started against some real patsies at home -- Savannah State, UNCG, Delaware Statem ECU and Citadel, but it did include a pretty impressive win at College Charleston.

Whether it's increased confidence or growing familiarity with Coach Brownell's system, I don't know but the last two games -- homecourt victories over Miami and the same Georgia Tech team that justed ripped UNC -- are fairly impressive.

Whether that translates into a historic victory in Chapel Hill, I can't say. Jerai Grant has been playing very well -- he averaged almost 17 points and eight rebounds over his last eight games. Stitt, who was hobbled by a knee problem (he missed two games with arthroscopic surgery), seems to be back in form (16/17/16 points in the last three with 13 total assists. The real question is how much can they get from Tanner Smith, Baby Booker and Andre Young.

I don't expect a win at UNC (although they get the Heels again in Littlejohn next month and I could see them winning that one). Still, it wouldn't be the biggest upset ever -- aside from from historic improbability.

PS UNC x-rayed Henson's elbow and it came up clean. He and McDonald (bad back) practiced Monday morning.

One thing I thought last week that would help the Tigers is getting UNC on short rest; UNC playing in Atlanta Sunday night then playing Clemson on Tuesday night. But it didn't look like UNC gave much effort Sunday night so tired legs shouldn't be an issue.

Unfortunately I know better than to get my hopes up too much for tonight's game. Last year would've been the year, but alas there was no match up in Chapel Hill. The entire campus is buzzing just a little bit this week for the game, and Coach Brownell has been bombarded by questions about the streak. If he does manage the win, he'll be able to make the terms of his own lifetime contract, I think.

Clemson led by 15 with 7 minutes to go and Oliver looked so tight you knew they were going to lose. He was waiting for the bottom to drop and it did. I thought his body language was terrible. Carolina came back and won in double OT. They could not win the year UNC won a whopping 8 games but who knows maybe this is the year, but for karma sake I will say probably not. Go Climson.

What’s going on with the Tigers? According to theacc.com, Clemson is shooting 84% from the free throw line, 52% from the field and 47% from behind the three-point line in ACC games to date. Those are not typical Clemson numbers. UNC, on the other hand, is shooting 66% from the free throw line, 35% from the field and 23% from behind the three point line. The Tigers also lead the ACC in blocked shots and are second in assists. Stitt and Grant appear to have gotten off to good starts. I will be amazed if Clemson can take down the Heels tonight but it should be fun watching on TV (in icy Northern Virginia).

Clemson's shot selection is horrible and that is killing them in this game. A sign of poor coaching. I was hoping this new coach would be a good one, but based on what I am seeing so far tonight, color me not impressed. They need to slow down and take better shots.

As for the heels, their best freshman is having a breakout night. He had 15 or 16 points in the first half scoring in a variety of ways. Maybe Roy will get him more than 15 mpg going forward...

Actually, I think UNC's defense gets the credit here. Clemson can get no looks inside. Zeller and Henson are doing a terrific job of shutting down any decent look in the paint. Clemson has to make 3's and force turnovers to win this one.

Agree that UNC has played really good defense this game, but I am referring to unforced jumpshots early in the clock, or jumpshots early in the clock with the defender in your face. Clemson took several of those in the first half. Just terrible shot selection.

They settled down in the 2nd half, but these last couple of minutes they forced bad shots again.

Totally agree on UNC's defense though. Much better tonight than Sunday Night.

Just not meant to be OPK. The Tanner injury hurt Clemson, and in the last 6 minutes after tying it up, Clemson missed shot after shot after shot. The UNC D was good, but Clemson could not throw it in the ocean.

Harrison Barnes has 1 assist and 6 turnovers... Nuff said.

Clemson almost got back, but if they plan on beating UNC in the Dome before time ends, then they better learn how to
A. Get to the line (UNC has a lot more free throws/fouls)
B. Stop turning the ball over
C. Shoot threes like Nolan Smith

It will happen eventually.

Yes. Maybe next year.

Although it was an ugly game I'd like to think that can be attributed to two teams really getting after it defensively. I didn't watch the GaTech game and I can't magine how UNC didn't dominate that game inside they way they did against us...but whatever the case they (Henson and Zeller) were spectacular in denying us the paint. Which forced us outside. Which is not our strength.

I'd beg to differ with Boozer about Brownell and his coaching. Having watched 25 years of Clemson trips to Chapel Hill I've only ever seen three or four competitive games. This one was in doubt as late as under 2:00. We lost our best post player (Grant) for the 1st half to fouls at the 10:00 mark, then lost our starting WG for the game a minute later then lost our next best post player (Booker) with more foul trouble at around 6:00. Just surviving the 1st half in shouting distance was a huge feat of coaching, if you ask me. And having the resilience to come back from down 10 with that crowd as desperate for the Heels to score a knockout punch as they were...I take a lot of positive out of the game.

FWIW, my car was gassed and ready to go. Trench coat on call. $3,000 in cash for bail(s). ;)

Maybe next year. Maybe.

And the fans are really welcoming as well (easy, I guess, when they assume they'll get us back in football).

Plus, a beautiful campus on Lake Hartwell. Great venue.

Sorry for the loss, although I must admit I wasn't really jazzed about seeing photographs of your "celebration." But better luck next time, I'd love to hear that you streaked to beat "The Streak."

If there is any positive from this Carolina win, and there is not, it is that a grown man won't hang nude from a sun clock on this night.

It is with great regret, Klempop, that I inform you that at this point the scenario consisting of the Dean E. Smith Center packing its things and traveling by ricksha to Salt Lake City to begin a career as an ice skater is more likely than the Tigers winning inside of it.

Clemson, you are hopeless. I am so sorry, Klem. :(

Maybe.

Klem

No offense intended there Klem. It was a "first impression" assessment by me. I am sure you have a better handle on how well Brownell is coaching your boys up than I. It was my first opportunity to see Clemson play this year and I was especially interested to see what style of play Brownell chooses. I did think they took several bad shots in the first half, but if you feel Brownell is a keeper, I will take your word for it until proven otherwise.

I was pulling hard for your boys, but it just was not in the cards. I agree the injury to Tanner hurt their chances badly. If HB was not so darn awkward making a move to the basket, Tanner likely does not get hurt there. The way he clumsely fell into him just made for an awkward collision there. Had HB not tripped it likely would have been a normal charge taken by your guy. Hope the injury is not real severe and Tanner heals up quickly. Have not read anything yet on how bad his knee is. Any news on that?
