Clemson has contacted Duke DC / Assistant head coach Marion Hobby about taking over the coaching of their defensive line.

I would think it would be an odd move if he takes it, but I also wouldn't mind seeing a different strategy in our defense.

I'm curious about who we would go after...not sure if it could be a positive for us or not.

From the Clemson side of things, I can tell you guys that Hobby would be stepping into a pretty shaky situation. Swinney is absolutely on the hot seat for next year and coaching for his job- which is part of why their former DL coach (Chris Rumph) jumped for Bama and a more stable situation. It's going to be hard for Swinney to find a new OC and special teams coordinator because he can't offer program stability. They are also losing one of their best DL in school history in Bowers. I wonder if Hobby would be interested in being thrust into such a tough position, especially when his job is only guaranteed for a year.

Agree with this. Doesn't make a lot of sense for either side. Hobby coached there under Bowden, so to the Clemson fans/admin this would have to look like a step backwards in time. For Hobby, not much stability and maybe not even that much of a pay difference. Obviously some more exposure, but Coach MacIntyre showed that a good coordinator at Duke can get an opportunity as a HC.

We'll see how it plays out. The defense struggled last year, and while a lot due to personnel, the coaching staff is not without blame.

Definitely...Down here in Clemson a lot of the die hard Tiger fans have been pretty upset with the way Clemson's been playing, and are rethinking the Swinney situation. I wouldn't be surprised if they started searching for a permanent coach soon.

The prevailing thinking is that Swinney has one more year. They're still paying Bowden's buyout, and the sitting AD pretty much staked his career on the Swinney hire, so he won't do anything about it unless he absolutely has to.

Duke sources say that Coach Hobby is out recruiting for Duke today and have no knowledge of a deal with Clemson at this time.

Surprising, but I'm not dissapointed. I'm looking forward to a fresh approach to our defense.

This is disappointing news as staff stability is an important aspect of building a winning program. We lost Mike MacIntyre after the 2009 season and now Marion Hobby after the 2010 season. Hopefully there will be a silver lining in this cloud with Coach Cutcliffe hiring a top defensive specialist to come in and help build our program.

Is there any early speculation on candidates for the opening?

I forgot about MacIntyre being the DC and leaving. That could explain some of the drop this year, plus we had lost valuable players from the year before. But still, I'm looking forward to a better defensive game plan.

Wonder if Ted Roof might be available any time soon...

Wonder if Jim Knowles, former head coach at Cornell, or Matt Lubick, former assistant at Arizona State, might be considered. Both have experience coaching and playing defense.

Think maybe he was really out recruiting for Clemson?

Hope we get someone who can recruit an ACC calibar defensive backfield. We need men not boys. I'm so tired of seeing us play so hard and get burnt by long passes where our D-backs don't even turn and look for the ball.
