VT press release

Virginia Tech guard Dorenzo Hudson will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season due to an injury to his right foot. Hudson will be eligible to receive a medical redshirt and will return to the Hokies for his senior season in 2011-12.

Hudson, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., originally injured the foot last season and had difficulties with the injury during the summer and into the current season. He saw an orthopaedic specialist earlier this week that recommend surgery for the injury.

“I am extremely disappointed for Dorenzo,” head coach Seth Greenberg said. “He has worked very hard to become an outstanding player and leader for this team. But his long-term health is of the utmost importance and the medical staff believes this is the best course of action for him. I know that he will continue to be a valuable part of this program for the remainder of the season and will come back stronger than ever next season.”

Hudson is currently third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game. He has played in nine of the team’s 10 games this season, starting eight times. He was a third team All-ACC selection last season, when he was second on the team in scoring at 15.2 points per game.

Raines to miss remainder of season with foot injury
Sophomore forward to redshirt the 2010-11 season

December 23, 2010

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Virginia Tech forward Cadarian Raines will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season due to an injury to the fifth metatarsal of his left foot. Raines will be eligible to receive a medical redshirt and will return to the Hokies for his sophomore season in 2011-12.

Raines, a sophomore from Petersburg, Va., originally suffered the injury early last season and had surgery on the foot. He reinjured the foot at the end of last season and had a second surgery on the injury last April, which did not heal as expected. He has undergone a variety of treatments to aid the healing process, but none have been successful. He will continue to be monitored by the Virginia Tech medical staff to determine the best course of action.

“This is really a tough blow for Cadarian,” head coach Seth Greenberg said. “His work ethic and attitude have been exceptional during this trying period and he has continued to work hard to improve. My only concern is for his long-term health and that is why we have decided to shut him down for the remainder of the season and get him healthy for his next three seasons here at Virginia Tech.”

Raines has appeared in just four games this season due to the injury. He has been limited to just 21 minutes of action..

I was just about to post this.

This really hampers VT's own chance at making the tourney (Again), which wasn't helped by their play WITH these two guys playing.

I don't see Seth on the hot seat because VT is not a bball school (and thus there are very low expectations) but still.

I think Seth has to get a pass on this. Hudson, Thompson, Chaney and Raines. That's way past what anyone would define as normal.

Wow ... one of the reasons the ACC has been so dreadful this season has been the l-o-o-n-n-n-g list of injuries around the league:

Duke: Kyrie Irving (out three games so far with more to come)

Virginia Tech: Hudson, Thompson, Rainey and Chaney ... That's a senior starting guard, a senior sixth man and the team's two top frontcourt reserves

N.C. State: Tracy Smith out for most of the season so far. He's only their best player, a returning second-team All-ACC pick

Wake Forest: Tony Chennault still hasn't played and may not. He's the only point guard on the roster. Freshman F Melvin Tabb, espected to challenge for a starting spot has missed most of the season with a combination of physical and disciplinary reasons (and that doesn't count C Tony Woods, who quit the team for academic/disciple reasons).

Virginia: Missed starting PG Sammy Zegliniski for the first month. Just as he returned, veteran F Mike Scott was sidelined.

Clemson: PG Demontez Stitt missed two games with knee surgery ...

Am I missing anybody? We'll have to see if John Henson's thumb injury costs him any time ... so far, he's sat out a half of a game they were winning easily.

Not saying you can blame the ACC's struggles on injuries, but they certainly haven't helped.

Add Virginia's Will Sherrill to the injured list.

any player go down to an injury. Most of these young men work very hard over the summer getting ready for the up coming season. It must be devastating to have it all ruined by an injury. At least Hudson will be able to redshirt and come back for his senior season. Let's hope and pray that Kyrie is able to return before season's end. Our prayers can't hurt. Go Duke!

Add Virginia's Will Sherrill to the injured list.

You can also add Xavier Gibson who has two separate injuries and is out 6-7 weeks.

His backups Bernard James and Jon Kreft who is now eligible play much more physically than Gibson, as does their third stringer Terrencve Shannon.

To a lesser degree of impact on the team, FSU's Ian Miller is also temporarily out with a groin injury which is the type of injury that is often reaggravated.

John Henson has an injury buit has ben playing through it.

So that next tier of teams right behind Duke all have their share of injuries too, to lessen the inmpact of Kyrie's toe injury.

The season ending injury to Droenzo Hudson actually forces Seth Greenberg to play Erick Green at PG and in a strange way helps Malcolm Delaney who is not a very good PG but a great SG.

Good point. Coach Greenberg needs somehow to make lemonade out of all these lemons, but it's going to be very tough. He's down, really, to 6 players [with 2 others who, right now, play very few minutes], no interior reserves [thus no back up a foul-prone Jeff Allen]. VaTech's highly favorable unbalanced schedule may help a bit, but if they get to 2d place in the ACC by season's end, they'll have played very effectively. And they'll have to do it with the starters averaging 32-35 mpg each.
