Insert your sense of humour here if it is not immediately obvious that the below is firmly tongue in cheek :-)

The solution to the problem is quite simple- Nate James needs to donate his big toe as a transplant to Kyrie- the subsequent infusion of badassery will not only insure a full recovery for Kyrie in a matter of minutes, but also an unparalleled season of success for the Blue Devils.

The Duke medical staff is hard at work developing the procedure for the transplant in their super secret underground labs. My source tells me that one of the challenges is that Nate James regenerates his toe so quickly they are concerned that the separated toe may grow another full Nate James before they can attach the toe to Kyrie.

Happy Holidays all!

... You're really ready to anoint Kyrie as "perhaps THE greatest college freshman ever" after only eight games? ...

I think we've just seen perhaps THE most hyperbolic post.......ever....... ;) ...

This, in light of descriptions of Horvath tearing it up in summer pick-up, and thus being the go-to guy in the future?

And exactly how is Kyrie supposed to run the fast break with his big toe stuck in the as$ of the toughest opposing player?

can Kyrie's body handle that much bad-assery? I think we may end up seeing graft vs host disease.

Hi,

Whenever Kyrie's toe is healed it will take him a bit of time to get back into basketball shape. I am guessing that part takes a few weeks. Darn these foot injuries!

GO DUKE!

Dude, I am not sure what kind of medical training you have gotten, but if Kyrie gets Nate's badass toe, then he will be instantly ready to play at full speed.

GO DUKE!

Very true but I'd expect him to be doing a lot of bike and pool work to keep his cardio in good shape. Basketball shape is different but I'd imagine K or whoever would easy him back into game situations.

But as Jason said, if he gets anything from Nate he will be good to go. Any stem cell research applications here? Get some stem cells from Nate and voila.

Frankly, after seeing Nolan's toes in the All-Access show, I wonder if it's really more of an infection than an injury. I mean, the chicks may dig those toes but -- wow!!

At the risk of stepping on K's toes, as it were, I think Duke needs to hire a toe-management specialist to make sure that we only recruit players with five-star toes. Anything less is really cheating ourselves in the long run.

O my toe! I dare not desert the likes of you in other guards and
forwards, nor the likes of the parts of you,
I believe the likes of you are to stand or fall with our place in
the polls,
I believe the likes of you shall stand or fall with Coach K, and
that he is the greatest,
of guards, forwards, centers, walk-ons, McDonald's All-Americans, legends, leaders,
record-holders, record-breakers, never-makers,
Dribble, shoot, pass, pivot, cut to the basket, the tympan of the years,
I am the ideal Duke point guard, from
Eyes, eye-fringes, iris of the eye, eyebrows, and the waking or
sleeping of the lids,
Mouth, tongue, lips, teeth, roof of the mouth, jaws, and the jaw-hinges,
Nose, nostrils of the nose, and the partition,
Cheeks, temples, forehead, chin, throat, back of the neck, neck-slue,
Strong shoulders, manly beard, scapula, hind-shoulders, and the
ample side-round of the chest,
Upper-arm, armpit, elbow-socket, lower-arm, arm-sinews, arm-bones,
Wrist and wrist-joints, hand, palm, knuckles, thumb, forefinger,
finger-joints, finger-nails,
Broad breast-front, curling hair of the breast, breast-bone, breast-side,
Ribs, belly, backbone, joints of the backbone,
Hips, hip-sockets, hip-strength, inward and outward round,
man-balls, man-root,
Strong set of thighs, well carrying the trunk above,
Leg-fibres, knee, knee-pan, upper-leg, under-leg,
Ankles, instep, foot-ball, toes, toe-joints, the heel;
All attitudes, all the shapeliness, all the belongings of my body,
If only my toe would heal, what exclamations of zeal would come forth
And no more of this being sad; no more of this lodi dodi;
O I say these are not the parts and poems of the body only, but of the soul,
O I say now these are the soul!

So from twitstalking, the Kyrie-watch for 12/16 looks something like this: Kyrie Irving was in Charlotte today with Duke athletic trainer Jose Fonseca and Asst Director of Rehab Nick Potter. Must have seen a specialist there.

Nice to see he's spending time with rehab guys, instead of surgeons, I guess?

Jose Fonseca? Or Antonio Alfonseca, who has six fingers on his throwing hand. Maybe the digit replacement speculation isn't too far off?

Looking ahead, if Kyrie returns, what are the chances his sock is retired at the end of the year?

BD80

So, this isn't a concrete update, but on another Duke message board, insider posters are dropping hints that there's been a positive development in the Kyrie toe department. They're posting all these smileys, saying UNC should be afraid, pictures of the Dean Dome and the March 5th date, etc. It's based on premium info that's paid for, though, so I don't actually know the information, and even if I did, I wouldn't divulge it anyways since people pay for it and I wouldn't want to post subscription-only info. However, since these hints are being posted on a free board, I thought I'd bring a little optimism to this board as well by relaying the emotions going on over there.

Please don't cite me for rumor-mongering as I'm simply stating a fact that another message board has several posters dropping positive hints in the toe healing department without actually revealing any information. I don't have any information and am not going to guess what it is. So you can take this as you wish. If you must delete this post, then so be it. In any event, I thought at least bringing some optimism to the posters here is more useful of a post than another toe pun. Cheers!

Those looking for real news and reasonable speculation and discussion in The Kyrie Irving Toe Vigil thread (http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?23376-The-Kyrie-Irving-Toe-Vigil) of Kyrie's injury have expressed an interest in cracking down on needless and off-topic posts. However, we realize that puns and other frivolity is a great way to pass the time until we know something. To satisfy everyone, I've separated the 168 posts of fun into this thread. Please enjoy the differences in threads.

To summarize:
Topical discussion, speculation, and news in continues in The Kyrie Irving Toe Vigil thread (http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?23559-Saving-Kyrie-s-Toe-amp-Other-Toe-tal-Chatter-%28From-the-Vigil-Thread%29).
Fun and silliness stays in this thread.
Rumors of any kind: find another board.

Just wanted to take a second to say thanks to the mods for this...I imagine it took a fair bit of work to separate the two threads...or maybe it didn't, in which case I would like my gratitude back please! ;)

Carolina...Go toe hell.

I will definitely be borrowing this phrase!
Two years ago, I started referring to my Carolina friends (yes, I have a few) as "toe heel fans" and to a certain player of theirs as "Toe Lawson". They got angry. I love that Duke fans can use our superior intoellect to break the tension as we await good news about Kyrie!

Not sure how much of that you can do while wearing a hard cast

Swimming in deep water with a hard cast is GREAT exercise, but I'm not sure its called swimming.

That's a form of unsolicited "exercise" for which New Jersey is infamously known.

Just to be clear: the Toe was neither "stuck in NJ" nor was it AWOL. The staff decided to let him have some extra time with his family.

Yes, the staff decided to give him an extra day toe rest.

Get well, Kyrie. Only you can prevent the death spiral which has become toe-related punnatry.

. . . as opposed to jokes about cement shoes?

My suggestions to the mods is that, if there is real news after the docs look next week, they move it to a new thread and let this one sink. Both threads have gotten well-worn, due to the fact that there is a lot of interest but no news. So, by and large, one thread is filled with bad puns (redundant, really) and the other is filled mainly with speculation.

Such is the conflict when the instant internet age crashes into the slow uncertainties of uncommon sports injuries.

Get well, Kyrie!

Easy guys. Let's keep it civil. We did move some posts out of the other Kyrie thread into this one. Everybody take a deep breath and let's enjoy ringing in the new year and keep the toe puns in this thread.

I heard Kyrie is hitting up a Toe-ga party tonight. Live performances by Toe-de the Wet Sprocket, Toe-ny, Toe-ni, Toe-ne and Toe-ne Loc are expected. After that, he'll be curling up with his favorite novel, For Whom the Bell Toe-lls and eating some milk and Toe-llhouse cookies.

IF he comes back, let's not forget that he will have had some significant practice time with the team during his recovery. It is not like he will remove the cast and walk out for the jump his first time back.

Oh yes he will. (see below)

Don't you see the evil genius that is Coach K? By having Kyrie fake this injury (tar heels will say that Coach K had Kyrie hobbled, but that hasn't been done in the Duke program since last century) the expectations for Duke have been lowered to a point where they will actually be an underdog in the tourney. When Kyrie makes his miraculous comeback, the opposing teams will be so disheartened that they won't stand a chance. The referees will watch Kyrie remove his walking boot before tip-off and be so moved that they will call a foul anytime an opposing player makes contact with Kyrie and will not call a travel on Kyrie even if he were to go coast-to-coast without a dribble.

And there'd probably be some smoke too. Maybe a light show.

I think this is, indeed, K's plan. Deep in the bowels of Cameron, in a secret practice facility, Kyrie is already going at full-speed drills with the entire team (violating practice hour restrictions in the process).

In the ultimate display of K's evil powers, not only will expectations have been lowered, but he will simultaneously make the committee give us an undeserved 1 seed AND the easiest bracket to the final four. Meanwhile, K will make sure that all legitimate contenders, such as Kansas and Ohio State, choke before reaching the Final Four.

And Duke engineering professors will have perfected an invisibility cloak, so he won't even be visible on the court. The officials, of course, having received their distributions from the Duke Alumni Officiating Fund, won't object.

So I was talking to a few co-workers about this page in general, and how Kyrie has the toe injury, after explaining what happened in the Butler game and how critical it is to our team (although I believe we will be just fine this year) my co-worker says "man, sounds like a TOEken injury" I had to giggle. I wasnt sure if that was used before, I just thought the context was funny and how he said it...;) Go Duke! Beat the Twerpts!

They're speaking English, it's just smothered in Tweet-speak.

Here's a transcript into Jane Austen English:

Quinn Cook: And if my friendly friend, Kyrie Irving, opts to remain hither in Durham, then I shall be ever so pleased! (And a handful we shall be to defeat, I might add.)

Kyrie Irving: Yes my dearest of friends, the latter surely is true.

Austin Rivers: Hark! You all speak the truth! We shall put forth the most strenuous of effort and have a delightful time in the process as we begin and end our Odyssey together, arm in arm, under Coach Krzyewski's learned hand! Let us not relinquish the chance, lest we look back upon those days with regret!

Add yet one more example of the value of a Duke education in navigating today's world.

Am I the only one who thinks that when Kyrie is given the Ok, the doctors will not remove the cast, but Kyrie will flex his big toe and rip the cast off himself and start dunking and breaking ankles right away? I expect a triple double against NC State on February 5th in Cameron toe the dismay of the Wolfpack. Toe soon? :D

I would love to see Kyrie dress out on Feb 9, just to see this reaction:

Yeah, someone asked him if he thought Kyrie should play against his boys and here was his response:

The Tale of the Toe

In a far away land,
in a time long ago,
there once was a man,
and the tale of his toe.
He started his path,
with potential, although,
there were no bounds or limits,
how much he could grow.

They thought he'd be great,
but soon he would show,
he was better than anyone,
ever could know.
His first competitions,
he conquered his foes,
He rose to the top,
leaving others below.

He kept getting better,
he wouldn't plateau,
He went where he pleased,
where he wanted to go.
And no one could stop him,
no one could slow,
No one, that is…
except for his toe.

But fate interfered,
a turn of his luck,
Eighth game of the season,
when tragedy struck.
He made a quick cut,
expecting to score,
Then stopped, in pain,
as he limped off the floor.

His fans crossed their fingers,
and hoped for the best,
They were sure he'd be fine,
if he just got some rest.
The very next game,
he expected to play,
But his MRI had
something different to say.

"The end of his season!
The end of the line!"
"He played eight great games,
but he wouldn't play nine."
The injury was,
much worse than they thought,
The news left his fans,
upset and distraught.

They cried all their worries,
and cried all their woes,
That the basketball gods,
had forsaken them so.
No one thought he'd be back,
no one could know.
No one, that is…
except for his toe.

His team, they played hard,
played strong and played fast,
As their comrade was sidelined,
wrapped up in a cast.
And slowly but surely,
through time and through space,
The bones of his toe,
moved back into place.

The news spread around,
and his fans all grew hope,
As the rest of the country,
all started to mope.
With him back on the court,
the team couldn't be stopped,
In their quest and their journey,

This story's not over,
it's just at the start,
He'll surely need guts,
and he'll have to have heart.
And he'll need his brain,
if he wants to succeed,
But most important of all,
a toe's what he'll need.

Nobody can say,
how much he can grow,
How fast he can run,
how far he can go.
No one can say it,
'cause nobody knows,
No one, that is…
except for his toe.

I do think he'll be playing in the carolina away game on March 5th, and he'll have several games under his belt at that point. I don't think he'll be playing by the home game on Feb. 9th. And I doubt you'll find anyone on the planet more optoemistic than me  That said, I hope you're right!

You gave that sign to me, and I passed it back to fans higher up in the student section. I feel like the media members sitting in front of me would not have been thrilled about having it repeatedly jabbed in their backs, particularly as they were the representatives of the Maryland student newspaper.

You need to get the Crazies going with the Toe Heal Toe Heal cheer at the UNC game. Divide them right down center court and mock that lame Tar Heal cheer and make Kyrie feel good.

It will be tough, as most cheers can only vaguely be understood by those even in close proximity, so getting anybody outside the student section to think we all haven't gone mad and switched allegiances is a challenge. Also, I'm not a tenter, so my square foot of standing room in Cameron is not guaranteed for the game. Starting cheers in the dark corners of section 17 is an added challenge. The word will be spread, don't worry.
