Not big news at all really, but I was looking at the roster on Goduke.com and noticed that they have added David Mayer, a 6'4 guard from Durham. From what I understand he has been a practice player this year, does anyone know anything about him? This reminds me of when we added Todd Zafirovski to the official roster last year when Olek Czyz transferred.

I know he probably won't get any playing time at all this year, but I assume his practice role has increased since Kyrie's injury.

Scholarship offers? High school stats? Any info on Mayer would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, congrats to him! That's quite an accomplishment and I'm sure he feels honored to now be officially on the roster. All I could find is that he went to Durham Hillside and scored 16 points to lead his team in the first round of the playoffs last year. Scored 10 points in another game, 3 points in a game two years ago, and two points in yet another one.

According to the Twitter update of a Pilates instructor in Boulder, Colorado, who once visited Durham, David Mayer will be starting at point guard against Elon.

Word is that Mayer's addition to the roster is what drove Rodney Purvis to Louisville. Some say Mayer is the second coming of Patrick Davidson.

Not to us, but I can only imagine how many phone calls he made after he learned of his new status. Big time congrats, that's a great Christmas present!

Slight correction to the information you provided about David. He graduated from Riverside, not Hillside. Regardless of what his role may have been in high school, he's on the Duke team, something many aspire to and few attain. ;)

Sorry, I had Hillside on the mind for some reason...But, yes, I agree and my post wasn't meant to belittle him as a player at all. I was simply providing anything I could find. Officially being a part of the Duke basketball roster is a mighty accomplishment for which David should be proud of. Many would love to be in his shoes.

Me too! I averaged 3.4 pts per game as a back up 2 guard in high school (2002) and it never even entered my mind to try out in college. Congrats to David! Greatest Christmas present ever!

Bilas just tweeted that Mayer could make a Ronald Nored type contribution in Duke's injury depleted back-court.

David's had the opportunity to be coached by Tim Ross at Riverside in Durham. Tim's a good coach whose players are well prepared.

Whew! Good thing. I was afraid he would be ill-prepared for this opportunity. ;)

Haha, sorry don't mean to be a smart aleck

An incredibly nice kid, who played for a very strong Riverside team last year. He could have played on scholarship at other schools, but was academically strong enough to go to Duke. Hs twin brother plays for Williams College.

It is good to have another guard for practice situations when Duke goes small

Seth - Nolan - Dre - Kyle - a Plumlee

Tyler - David - Casey - Josh - Ryan is more representative on the OOC competition Duke faces Elon and UNC Greensboro that are sandwiched around Christmas break.

In a somewhat similar way as Mayer, Todd Zafiroski joined the team during the season last year, though substantially later than Mayer, but didn't play a single second. He has gotten a few minutes this year, which is a tribute to his hard work. I wonder if Mayer will get to enjoy the distinction of seeing his name in the box score this year. Best of luck to him.

Doesn't matter. He knows his role on the team and it's not to get on the floor during a game with the clock running. Casey and Todd know their roles, too. And please don't chant his name to get him into the game. A certain someone doesn't like that and it will have the reverse effect. The certain someone said so last Friday at the BDC meeting.

But having said that, congrats to David! Thanks for your effort and dedication to the program you love and I hope you do get into one or more games!http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/happy/bouncyblue.gif http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gif

i am just wondering but if he has been added doesn't that mean that Kyrie will not be back? If he is finished for the year, his college carrer will have lasted a whole 8 games.

Seriously? We already had walk ons Casey and Todd to give us 10 guys for practice. In what way do you think David Mayer is going to help us replace Kyrie? Why would they be related in any way?

Especially since David was already practicing with the team before Kyrie went down. Having David Mayer make the official roster has no bearing and was not the result of anything to do with Kyrie Irving.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. I just don't know how the roster thing works. Like if adding anyone would put you at the limit or if you add someone you have to wait so long to add anyone else during the season. Again I am sorry, I hope David has a wonderful experience!!

You didn't offend anyone. I probably overreacted. I apologize now if I'm telling you stuff you already know. We are only allowed 13 scholarships, but (a) we only have 10 this year; and (b) David Mayer won't be on scholarship. I think there's a total roster limit of 15 for road games, but even with Kyrie and our two other walk ons we still only have 12 plus David, so that's not an issue either. I don't think there's a limit to how many walk ons can dress for home games but, again, our roster is small enough that it doesn't matter either way.

Yeah, UNC has 16 on their roster currently and in recent years they've had 18. They like a lot of walk-ons.
