Does anyone know where I can download the Font that is on our Jersey's? I'm trying to work on my brother's Christmas present and need the font to complete it! I'm also looking for good quality pictures (action/game perferably) of all players who have had their numbers retired. Any help is appreciated!

Don't know for sure, but I'd bet it isn't even a standard typeface. If so, then the best you could do is approximate it. Or download an image of it, depending on what you need it for.

I don't know either, but I seem to remember reading that Coach Krzyzewski has insisted, through all of the Nike mayhem wrought on our uniforms, that the font and the kerning in the D U K E logo has remained the same throughout.

through all of the Nike mayhem wrought on our uniforms,

If you're referring to the styling on the back, the only I've heard from K considering it was praise

other than that, do you have any evidence that K took issue with any uniform changes?

the lettering has changed anyway

My guess is that "DUKE" is not one font. I've spent much time looking and never found the perfect match. So I assume it is hand-crafted. The letterforms are simple and easy to recreate or trace.

Though I haven't done any research on the font for the numbers, myfonts.com has a powerful search function that can help you find the font or get you very close. Here is a good start. (http://new.myfonts.com/morelike/76889/)

I don't have an answer, but I'm guessing the ones that are guessing it's unique to Duke are correct. Notice the similarity to the "0" and what an overhead shot of Cameron looks like?

If the font doesn't have a name, we should give it a Duke-oriented name. Something distinctly Duke, preferably one word, and, well, easy to spell.

Sadly, the name Trajan (http://www.identity.ku.edu/fonts/trajan.shtml) is taken.

Sorry, using Uni Watch parlance there.

"Vertically arched" means the vertical parts of the letters of "DUKE" are parallel. The horizontal parts of the letters are still arched. Example here (http://hoopedia.nba.com/images/6/65/HurleyJersey.jpg).

http://hoopedia.nba.com/images/6/65/HurleyJersey.jpg

"Radially arched" means the vertical parts of the letters converge at a point, if you imagine drawing a line extending downward from all the verticals in the letters. Example here (http://i869.photobucket.com/albums/ab260/johndion879/25_a.jpg), which is a bastardized version of the jerseys worn in the Hurley era. Also, the "HURLEY" in the vertically-arched jersey is radially-arched.

Got it

I was trying to think the actual shape of the arch was different, and not that it was referring to the actual orientation of the letters. I understand now

That Laettner jersey was before Duke signed its deal with Nike (after the 1993 season). With the exception of a couple shifts in the arching back to vertical, the lettering has been pretty much the same since the mid-90s:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RVLfSMIB7K0/R_In0M8ZhqI/AAAAAAAAH7Q/OdrOb53X5fs/s320/001Wojo.jpg

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRLf8vls050LWgzLRUQKU0T6lXrMHtP7 HTYJ0CxPcO7sLYYiHjJxA

And while I don't know what timeframe throatybeard meant to encompass with the Nike "mayhem" reference, it's really kicked into high gear over the past 6 or 7 years (with the introduction and abandonment of the devil horns, the introduction of the wider shoulders, multiple changes to the trim, and the new Gothic "watermark" design on the back). The lettering has remained consistent during this time of relative mayhem, so it's entirely possible that Coach K put in a request relative recently, and that throatybeard's source was therefore correct.

And throaty never said Coach K "took issue" with any of the recent uniform changes...just that he requested the Duke font/kerning stay the same. For the most part, it has.

The more I thought about this the more I decided I was wrong. I can think of any numbers of movie posters about college life (usually lame comedies) that use a similar font, so I figured I'd google "collegiate font". Guess what? This site might have something you are looking for.

Okay I will admit to being a "dumb blonde" but I honestly can't see anything other than the word CHAMP with both of those pictures ;)
On a side note: On Saturday I was waiting in line at Saks & the lady in front of me had a DUKE t-shirt on so I asked her if she was excited about the game. Of course she was & they were getting ready to make their way to MSG for the game. Now register the look of shock/panic when I mentioned that the game was being played in the Meadowlands.

Our brains are really good at making up spellings for things that make perfect sense if we haven't seen a common phrase spelled out. I recently had a coworker send me a note stating that 'for all intensive purposes' something was true. I probably shouldn't care (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7E-aoXLZGY), but that's the slippery slope that leads to sportscasters saying a team needs to get 'untracked.' :)

I was thinking 1996-97 (Black unis debut in the PNIT) to the present. You're absolutely right about the past six or seven years; as late as 2004 our blue unis were relatively unmolested:

http://duke.edu/~bct1/images/DuhonUNCLayup.jpeg

It's really two eras of mayhem, mild pre-2004, and hog wild post-2004.

And throaty never said Coach K "took issue" with any of the recent uniform changes...just that he requested the Duke font/kerning stay the same. For the most part, it has.

Indeed, back when the black unis were still truly controversial rather than business-as-usual, Coach K would verbally defend the black ones. Some fans tended to believe that Nike sort of hands these down from the mountaintop. I have no idea how it actually works, but in 1998 or 1999 my friend asked Coach during Carolina Eve Q&A, I paraphrase, "how do you feel about the black uniforms, because we hate them?" And Coach really smacked him down, said something like "Well I take that kind of personally, because we've put a lot of thought into those," or words to that effect.

I will say this: While I still hate the black unis, and even moreso, the black trim on the blue unis, that Gothic shrinky-dink overlay has really grown on me.

At least we're not Oregon, I tell myself.
