For those fans of Agatha Christie, I have a whodunit for you. I noticed that in the USA today poll Duke has 29 of the 31 first place votes for a total of 772 points. If you do the math that means that one of the coaches picked Duke for 2nd place and one for 3rd place. The suspects are:

Mike Adras, Northern Arizona; Dana Altman, Creighton; Tommy Amaker, Harvard; Tevester Anderson, Jackson State; Ronnie Arrow, South Alabama; Randy Bennett, Saint Mary's; Eddie Biedenbach, North Carolina-Asheville; Jim Boeheim, Syracuse; Rick Byrd, Belmont; Charlie Coles, Miami (Ohio); Steve Fisher, San Diego State; Greg Graham, Boise State; Rob Jeter, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Billy Kennedy, Murray State; Billy Lange, Navy; Dan Leibovitz, Hartford; Fran McCaffery, Siena; Mike McConathy, Northwestern State; Bob McKillop, Davidson; Phil Martelli, Saint Joseph's; Ron "Fang" Mitchell, Coppin State; Matt Painter, Purdue; Tom Pecora, Hofstra; John Pelphrey, Arkansas; Mike Rice, Robert Morris; Doc Sadler, Nebraska; Herb Sendek, Arizona State; Scott Sutton, Oral Roberts; Bob Williams, UC-Santa Barbara; Gary Williams, Maryland; Doug Wojcik, Tulsa.

So the question is which coach did that? Who would the Worlds Greatest Detective, Hercule Poirot, determine to be the guilty party? If it were actually a Hercule Poirot mystery then Gary Williams would not be the one since the obvious person is never the correct choice.

I'll go with Tommy Amaker, trying to defuse expectations.

John Pelphrey. Some wounds take a long time to heal.

I pegged Doug Wojcik for the same reason. Long-time UNC assistant coach, and he played under Skip Prosser (not at Wake, though).

If Pelphrey is mad at someone, it should be at Pitino for not guarding the inbounder.

Is Biedenbach a former unc dude? If so, I'll nominate him.

This is easy. Before I saw this year's list, I wondered, "Does [offending coach who should be obvious] still have a vote?.... oh yeah, he does."

The second-place vote was probably either Painter, who would have put his own team first, or Fisher, who may harbor a slightly lesser grudge against us than That Other Guy does. Oh wait, John Pelphrey! He hates us too! This is tough.

Thanks. Cancel my nomination. I'll go with Pelphrey then.
