Thought I would take the time to inform the board of its latest loquacious member. I would also like to thank several people without whom this would not have been possible.

Thank you Jason Evans whose prolific posting about random topics is probably responsible for at least 98 out of my 100 posts.

Thank you DevilAlumna for being a techie and a Jason collaborator.

Thank you Jumbo for bluntly repudiating irrational posts but spawning huge conversation threads in the process

But most of all, thank you [company that i work for] for boring days, light work days, and chronic underutilization which provides that all-important "free time" necessary for posting.

From what I can deduce:

0-9 posts: Hoop Dreams
10-19 posts: Manager
20-49: Walk-on
50-74: Victory Cigar
75-149: Bench Warmer
150-299: In the Rotation
300-599: Sixth Man
600 - ?: Starter

I'm guessing 1200 gets you to All-ACC, 2400 gets you to All-American, so on and so forth. I'll let you know when I get there :D

Labels, labels, labels...oh why must we live in a world of labels??? Can't we all get along fine without a caste system as arbitrary as the number of posts one writes? Why is being a prolific writer such a good thing, anyway? Better to write crap than nothing at all?

I've been reading this Board since it was born and I'm considered a "Walk-on"? That's an insult. I should be "Coach K" or "Saint" for the number of years I've been reading the drivel that some of you write on this site! Where's the respect I deserve as an old-timer around here?

Alas!, boards don't thrive when people read, only when people post. Even drivel, just as long as it's civilized drivel.

(And if you have any good, thoughtful ideas on lowering the drivel content - civilized drivel or not - while keeping an active board, I'd like to hear it. But that's a different discussion.)

I honestly want to know if Duke leads the nation in number of basketball players named Marty. We've had a "Marty" to represent the last three decades:

2000s - Marty Pocious
1990s - Marty Clark
1980s - Marty Nessley

That will total 12 combined years of Marty when Pocious moves on. That's a lot of Marty. I challenge anyone to come up with a school that can claim that many Martys on their basketball team. I mean, golly, Marty isn't exactly a name you associate with sports.

Except that moderators have fixed statuses which don't change as post count goes up. Jason leads Throatybeard by about 150 posts at the top of the board, but the top non-moderator poster is Feldspar, currently sitting at 628 posts, which makes him a "starter". Burns: Tell me, Simpson. If an opportunity arose for taking a small shortcut, you wouldn't be adverse to taking it, would you?

Homer: Uhh, not as such.

Burns: Mm-hmm. If you can take advantage of a situation in some way, it's your duty as an American to do it. Why should the race always be to the swift or the jumble to the quick-witted? Should they be allowed to win merely because of the gifts God gave them? Well, I say cheating is the gift man gives himself!

Homer: Mr. Burns, I insist that we cheat.

Burns: Excellent.

My thirst for forbidden knowledge has inspired a simple little mechanism for collecting all of the names. Nothing even vaguely hackish or that would cause undue stress on the system. I'm wondering whether to pursue that line of thinking.

What do you say? Does that reflect a level of OCD that should not be mentioned in polite company, or are others similarly compelled to look at the answer key?

While I can't officially speak for Julio and Bos, I would have to say that deliberately trying to go around the natural order of this Board would be a violation, possibly including banning.

If you click on "members list" at the top of each page and then click on "posts" to sort it by total number of posts you may be able to see a LOT of the levels where the titles appear. For example:

1149- Laettner
203- Wojo
202- Hurley
145- Laettner
133- Grant Hill
114- CWell

I imagine that if you check every couple days you may find a LOT more of these as the posting totals change and people acquire new titles.

Best of luck compiling a full list!! It will take some work. I think you may have enough info to figure out how the system works though.

Okay, that list that Jason Evans pointed out is very cool. Not only for the benefit of finding out what numbers are what, but also because I am amazed at how few posters actually have hundreds of posts.

For some reason, I thought hundreds of posts was normal. But most of the members are below 100 posts, with over half having zero posts. I guess we do have lots of lurkers.

Here is a stab at the standard levels:
0-9 Hoop Dreams
10-19 Manager
20-49 Walk-on
50-74 Victory Cigar
Randomly victory cigar or benchwarmer between 50 and 75
75-149 Bench Warmer
150-300 In the Rotation
302-500 Sixth Man
501-1000 Starter
1001-??? All ACC, honorable mention

I'm guessing we'll go through thruugh 3rd team to 1st team All ACC, then All-American honorable, 3,2,1.

I have the special numbers coming up soon - I need to figure out how to put the document up.

Thanks. I had forgotten that resource. Not a bad player. I honestly had never heard of him (or seen the name previously associated with our more prolific posters).

IIRC, Hurt was the senior captain on the 1961 team, so his prominence exceeded his level of play. Heyman was a soph that year and his arrival changed the dynamics. Also on that team were Carroll Youngkin, Doug Kistler, Johnny Frye and Buzz Mewhort. It went 22-6 in Bubas' 2d year. (Yunk has been a DBR contributor in the past and may well comment on Hurt's excellence.) With Mullins waiting in the wings as a freshman, the whole school was lighting up. It was the birth of the pre-Crazies. (Heck, Eddie Cameron was still the AD.) Here's a link to the 1961 team's players and stats (http://www.dukeupdate.com/Seasons/19601961_duke_blue_devils.htm).

In those years only the ACC tournament champion went to the NCAAs. Duke lost to Wake Forest 96-81 in the ACC championship. Hurt had a tough night. However, we had run into a very good Wake team with Billy Packer and Len Chappell which subsequently lost in the Regionals. (The next year Wake went to the Final Four where they lost to Ohio State and then won the consolation game against UCLA.)

At that time, the ACC prohibited its other teams from playing in the NIT, so Hurt and the team were unable to redeem themselves there.

Thanks again. 5 guys with double digit scoring. Looks like there could have been a deeper rotation and some work on the FT shooting-wonder how far they would have gone if those 2 variable had been improved:D (now where have I heard that discussion before. Hmmm...)

First off, I'd just like to give a big shout-out to Houston Nutt and Bobby Petrino for helping get me where I am today. Houston, only you could take a shoo-in for the Heisman and make him an also-ran. Talent, man; that's what makes it all happen. Bobby, man, you'd better win 10 games or more next year or you will learn that the folks supporting you now will be calling for your head on a silver platter. Oh, and ask Houston what happens to your status with the fans when you start interviewing for jobs with other teams while stating your loyalty to the team. You just think those Atlanta folks are tough. Don't stir up the Bubbas! :D

It's too bad that posts don't keep their original post number, rather than every post a person has ever put up getting updated (post number wise) each time one posts. Is that a change that the moderators can initiate or is that just a feature/characteristic of the system that can't be changed? I've wondered about this since we started using the system.

I knew you could not resist the temptation, especially at 990+ posts and, with a childhood canine named Satan, how prophetic...

I thought you were allergic to cats?

No knowledge of any micros from Richmond, KY. Perhaps KenTankerous will reply or KyDevil(?). BUT, there is a brewery in Richmond, VA called the Richland Brewery, I think. Tupper Hop Pocket is a rather hoppy IPA that I have had that is not quite as over the top with bitterness as Hop Devil is. They also brew a Tupper Pils(I think) which is quite floral, mildly hoppy and makes a nice beverage with mild chicken or fish entrees.

Speaking of EKU(a German brewer), they have several excellent offerings, especially their EKU 28, an eisbock, that is very caramel-like and high octane(11-12% ABV). Throaty talked about this one about 6-8 weeks ago on the 'ymmm, beer' thread.

We discussed this many pages back in this thread. Google results show a preponderance of antisemitic associations with "Nickel Nose," but I assume it's meant to be some reference to the devil. I think we should use a different term.
