A great project involving a number of Dukies, including Grant Hill, is underway to produce a film honoring Duke coaching legend Al Buehler.

Good article in the Raleigh N&O discussing the effort. (http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/07/30/603988/from-track-to-film.html)

Unell (a 2003 Duke graduate and Today Show producer) plans hold a rough-cut screening of the documentary at Duke on Sept. 24. She said Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, who was interviewed for the film, told her he would be there to show his support along with members of his 2010 national championship team. She hopes to debut the film at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham next spring.

I had the privilege of serving with Al Buehler on the Duke Alumni Association’s Board of Directors for many years. Al is one of the superb Dukies: smart, selfless, a superior “quite leader,” and a peerless teammate. I am so glad this documentary is being made and I am sure it will do justice to this wonderful gentleman’s life and career.

I took Coach Al's class two years ago and it was one of the best experiences I had at Duke. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about sports, even from a historical perspective, but I learned a ton in that class. He would tell great stories about his years on the Olympic staff. There was never a dull moment in his class.

I knew and worked with Al in the organizing commitees for the big track meets in Durham during the 70's. He was wonderful to work with and a fine friend.

My brother, a producer/editor for Good Morning America, let me know that the film, Starting at the Finish Line, was featured this morning (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Entertainment/video/grant-hills-documentary-13426673?tab=9482931&section=1206836&playlist=2898870&page=1). It debuted today at the Phoenix Film Festival.

Al Buehler was so far ahead of his time. Robin Roberts interviewed the film's executive producer, Grant Hill.

Very nice interview with Grant, who seems to be making the most of his off-seasons telling the story of an outstanding and forward-thinking Duke coach.

I saw the piece- Grant did a great job, as usual. He is also the narrator- a job he thought would be easy but quickly learned it was not. The film also highlights Buehler's friendship with Leroy Walker - coach at Central - and how the two broke down some racial barriers . Looking forward to seeing this.
