Hey guys, we're running a tournament (http://www.scacchoops.com/tt_NewsBreaker_External.asp?NB=3651) featuring the top 24 teams in ACC Basketball (since 75-76). The tournament is being run through our game simulator (http://www.scacchoops.com/gamesimulator.asp) and each matchup is a best of 5 series.

Our first matchup today had #16 UNC 76-77 falling to #17 Virginia 80-81 (http://www.scacchoops.com/tt_NewsBreaker_External.asp?NB=3658) 3-1 in the best of 5 series.

Tomorrow, #9 Duke 09-10 faces #24 Boston College 05-06.

We're hoping to generate some buzz and NBCSports.com has already run an article on it (http://beyondthearc.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2010/04/28/2288976.aspx).

My feeling is this year's Duke squad is going to make a run, although they have to go through both Duke 90-91 and Duke 91-92 to make the final 4. Tough draw to beat Laettner and crew twice!

Since '75-76? *Snicker*

Was there a team that you just narrowly avoided that was to be feared?

No not at all, I wanted to include NC State 73-74 and Maryland 73-74, but we didn't have the data needed for our game simulator prior to the 75-76 season.

How does your game simulator account for the changing quality of acc basketball over time? That is, the quality of competition that Duke 91-92 faced may be very different relative to the competition faced by the 09-10 Duke team. I looked around your website a bit, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks!

We look strictly at this team's numbers to determine their tempo, turnover rate, off reb %, etc. So, each team's performance is fairly isolated. That said, we do take into account rules when matching up two teams from different eras. If the 3 point shot wasn't eligible for one of the two teams matched up, then the 3 point shot is not eligible for the simulation.

I'd love to see the '83 Pack take on this past years Duke squad

Unfortunately, those two are on opposites of the bracket and I think its unlikely to see that matchup. Fortunately, you can just plug it into the simulator, and do it yourself. Click here to run the sim for these two teams (http://www.scacchoops.com/gamesimulator.asp?hometeam=du&homeyear=2010&awayteam=st&awayyear=1983).

Just simmed and NC State 82-83 beat Duke 09-10 79-73.

Well looks like I won't be visiting then. Any program that has Duke losing at any point is flawed. JK......sounds like a cool idea, I will head over there now.

Seems a waste to have all 4 of Duke's national championship teams on the same side of the bracket. Particularly the 2000-2001 team seems rated a bit low. I'm calling the '00-'01 team vs. the '91-'92 team as the real title game :).

#24 Boston College 05-06. What is this - can it be that team make the top 24 in the past 25 years or am I missing something here.

as I mentioned...

* in a few cases, I placed the top team from another school over another Duke/UNC team since those schools had more selections

I think 01 and 92 Duke rank with 82 unc as the best. Not sure who the fourth in the Final Four would be. I'll have to check out these brackets and simulations this weekend.

I'll bite and nitpick.

It seems obvious that your seeding intentionally put all National Champs ahead of any/all runner ups.

Duke '99 with Brand, Avery, Langdon, et. all should almost certainly be ahead of Duke '10 and I would argue the same might be true for Duke '04, which isn't even included...and yet you included BC '06?

Anyway, its cool nonetheless! I'll track see how it plays out.

It was incredibly difficult to seed all of these great teams, I had to pick some concrete way to do it and I went with how they finished. Duke '04 was one of 3 teams bumped by the Wake Forest, Clemson, and BC teams. I really wanted JJ to be included, but I had to give them the boot to get some other schools (and fanbases) included.

Cool idea, and I'll check and see how it turns out. My only qualms would be that Duke's 2000-2001 is ranked two low (there is no way 1993 UNC is better) and that, as someone said, 2004 Duke is definitely better than 2006 BC, and probably better than the Clemson and FSU teams you included. But, I do see why you included those others, to encorporate more schools and not have your list be 1/3 Duke teams. Regardless of team diversity, if the Duke team was better, it should have been included. Anyway, I like the idea. Should be interesting.
