I saw a similar thread about just Andre's nicknames: Andre 3000, Andre the Giant, Dre, etc. (my favorite is The Doctor). I thought giving our 2010-2011 players a few nicknames would be good.

Before I get a bunch of responses saying "we need to let them earn their nicknames on the court" this is just for fun.

As far as I can tell our roster for 2010-2011 will look like this:

1 Kyrie Irving G 6-1 172 Fr. Elizabeth, N.J
3 Seth Curry G 6-1 175 So. Charlotte, N.C.
20 Andre Dawkins G 6-4 190 So. Chesapeake, Va.
51 Steve Johnson F 6-5 210 Sr. Colorado Springs, Colo.
34 Ryan Kelly F 6-10 220 So Raleigh, N.C.
53 Casey Peters G 6-4 185 Sr. Red Bank, N.J.
5 Mason Plumlee F 6-10 230 So. Warsaw, Ind.
21 Miles Plumlee F 6-10 240 Jr. Warsaw, Ind.
12 Kyle Singler F 6-8 230 Sr. Medford, Ore.
2 Nolan Smith G 6-2 185 Sr. Upper Marlboro, Md.
52 Todd Zafirovski F 6-8 240 So. Lake Forest, Ill.
Not sure about numbers for:
Joshua Hairston F 6-9 220 Fr. Spotsylvania, VA
Tyler Thornton G 6-2 180 Fr. Washington, D.C
Carrick Felix F 6-6 190 So. Glendale, AZ

So nickname away!

All Day Dre.

Once he finds his own in Durham, seriously watch out. I think it could be Dennis Scott-esque.

I'm going to say what you told people not to say: players' nicknames should be earned and should arise organically. Otherwise you end up with something like "Markie", a cringe-worthy DBR creation that none of DeMarcus' friends ever called him.

And minus the Twinkies.

To me, Dre is always going to be Baby Face Dawkins. It's perfect - his youthful face and the braces, but he can kill you with those threes (just ask Baylor).

As athletic as Felix is, is there any way he's not going to end up being "The Cat"?

I heard K call him that before I ever read it on DBR. Are you suggesting that K got it from DBR?

I think Felix the Cat def sticks.

I like Seth "Slow Death" Curry and "Mace in your Face" Plumlee

Carrick Felix just sounds cool as it is... I hate to even change it, but Felix the Cat is good. All Day Dre works. I almost want to go Ricky Bobby with Kyrie and Nolan. Kyrie would be "Shake" and Nolan could be "Bake."

not sure

but i can take a 'shot of andre' right about now....don't know if many people would get it.....

'double T' will fly for thorton....

wasn't the lucky potion from harry potter called 'felix felicis'?....also known as 'liquid luck'.....i can see that on a sign

spice for curry....idk

1 Kyrie Irving G 6-1 172 Fr. Elizabeth, N.J
20 Andre Dawkins G 6-4 190 So. Chesapeake, Va.

Kyrie Irving = "Dr. K" (as in Julius Erving = "Dr J.")
Andre Dawkins = "Dr. Dre"

Dr. K and Dr. Dre... booyah

Is it possible to just call them their names and allow any nickname to evolve through their play?

Well of course but as it is stated at the start of the thread this is for pure fun.

Sheesh! Please just take a chill pill everybody. This is just for fun.

Kyrie is just K.I. as in Allen Iverson.

With a name like Carrick Felix, he doesn't even need a nickname.

And Andre will probably have several nicknames by the end of his career.

I know it's been used a lot in the past but i've always referred to Nolan as Nolan "Showtime" Smith. Not original, but i just found myself using it more than others

i find myself uttering that word under my breath every time nolan gets the ball on a fast break.....

or when mason gets the defender in the air on a fake about 10 feet from the basket...

ExtraCarrickular Smacktivities.

It's a little wordy, but fitting once he starts throwing balls into the bench in Section 17 in the second half.

I always called DeMarcus Nelson "Danger Mouse."

I don't think I was the only one who called him this. Obviously, Danger Mouse is a much cooler nickname than "Markie."

Yes - b/c the "cat" stuff just sounds juvenile and not very intimidating at all.

"Hurricane" Felix does however have a good ring to it...

In that case I think "Dirty Thirty" is a possibility.

I thought he might (because of his father, and the fact that he wore it at Liberty), but is this confirmed (a Scheyer retirement notwithstanding, which isn't likely anyway)?

It's pretty inevitable that Felix will be nicknamed Felix the Cat, which is completely appropriate (just think of the characteristics of a cat and, bingo - they match).

I'm a little surprised that no one on this team has a nickname. My favorite that I've heard so far (on ESPN) is the Brothers Plumlee. Not original, but I like it.

Nolan needs a nickname. For some reason, and I can't explain it, but Nolan without a nickname just seems like an incomplete Nolan.

The Cameron Crazies are notorious for coming up with nicknames for Duke players. Do you have a nickname now or is there something you want to be known as?

"I just got one from Kyrie [Irving]. He calls me 'Jiggy' when we are on the floor. If you pay attention tomorrow you will hear him call me 'Jiggy'. I think that may be the name, but as of right now that is the only one I have."

At the risk of being to old to have any REAL pop cultural references that resonate with the younger crowd...

I've been looking for a way to slide in this Jewel of a Die Hard movie quote..

Yes.

On a serious note, personally, I love All Day Dre. I've heard it a couple different times and think I invented it actually. Although I'm not sure.

I like "Mase in Yo Face" Plumlee and always holler "Larry Legend" when Kyle shoots and swishes home a silky 15-footer. Not sure that's a nickname but it works for me.

I occasionally have pretty good seats very close to Coach K's family. At a preseason game a few years back (obviously), Debbie called him Markie, so some people obviously call him that.

Someone said "my three plums". It's hard for me to think of one Duke player being called a "fruit" let alone a whole bunch.

it should be mp3's...like the music files. they are entertaining and their offensive contributions are mostly audible -- thundering rim-rattling dunks.

but like the poster above I think consciously creating nicknames is silly.

In one recent game, Knight was in the studio with Digger and others. He kept referring to Mason as "Plumber." Digger corrected him three times before Knight finally said, "Whatever," and then went back to saying "Plumber." Good enough for R.M. Knight, good enough for Sagegrouse.

In the spirit of the thread - good-hearted joking. I absolutely love Kelly's game and what he brings to our team. Can't wait for K to pass Deano and the ACC to start!

Agreed. I'm pretty sure that I heard K call him "Markie" before it was used here.
