To me the new one looks like something out of an "Animorphs" book

The old one looks like a beefed up blue Noid (remember that Domino's character?)

I prefer the old though.

Aesthetically, I go for the old one. The big head is classic. But I think the new one works better just because the person inside the suit can actually move around while wearing it and we don't have to worry about torn ACLs as much.

I have a picture of my daughter and me with the new one right before countdown to craziness this past year. New one wins by default.

EDIT: It also seems like the new one interacts with the players more so he seems more a part of the team if that makes sense

New one.

There was a large picture on the front page of the Toledo Blade up here on Tuesday of Coach K hugging the new Devil underneath the headline, "Devil of a Finish." Next to the photo of Coach K and the Devil hugging is a large shot of Hayward's final heave.

I plan on framing this one. It's quite the sight.

The new one has a little of the Mark Hamill touch to it. If you go back and look at the Luke Skywalker action figure from the 70s when the movies first came out, the action figure actually looks like Mark. When the new Star Wars came out, they introduced new action figures and Mark had this to say about the reintroduced Luke Skywalker Action Figure, "It looks like I'm on steroids."

Regardless, I favor the new.

I believe that this is the 2005 throwback 100th Anniversary game. Same Devil, just wearing a mid-1980s uniform.

I like the old. I always dug on the slight goofiness of his enormous head (which is how a proper mascot should look in my opinion).
The new one looks too much like they've slimmed down in some places and beefed up in others as a nod to the MMA crowd, or something.
That said, I love all Blue Devils.

Old (and by old I mean the early 2000s edition) every day of the week and twice on Sunday. New one looks mean (and not in a good way). The old one is playful and good for kids and looks more like what I think a mascot should look like - Mr Met, Philly Phanatic, etc. - as someone else said, slightly goofy.

I'm suprised by the level of support for the "new" mascot. Frankly I think it just looks lame.

The new one just looks like a guy in a halloween mask he bought at wal mart on the way to the game. How is that cooler than the 2000's devil?

......has been a shot in the arm to all the fans in Cameron and Wade. He's much more mobile and intense. He's able to get around in the upper tier and get folks involved since he doesn't have to handle the big, goofy bobble head. He's much more spirited with lots more personality. He means business and I love him! Bless his heart!

Love, Ima

I think it's no simple coincidence that the new Blue Devil with a new attitude appeared at the first football game of the 2008 season.

It took me a while to warm up to the new mascot, but I have. I still wish there had been some sort of "send-off" for the old one - a "retirement party", or a passing-of-he-torch ceremony at half-time, something. The old one had served us well, and he vanished and was replaced like Darrin Stephens in Bewitched.

I think this was discussed a couple of years ago when the change was made and I sided with the old Devil.
But, now that I've seen how dead sexy the new one is, I'm all for it!

I originally had very mixed feelings about the change....almost as if liking the new one somehow made me "unfaithful" to the old one (and its attendant memories). However, have had several parents of small children tell me that their kids were afraid of the old one but not the new one.

That surprised me given the goofy grin of the old devil. Guess it has something to do with the oversized head.

Have grown to prefer the new version and his swagger. Also, the foam on the old one always looked a bit dirt/ratty.

To me the old one was very unique...w/ the BIG head...I loved it...

The new one looks like an action figure or something....

I'm not a HUGE fan, maybe it'll grow on me...

I kind of like the "batman" version the most though...

Kind of like West VA and the Mountaineer and FSU and the Seminole....a real person...instead of some mask that looks like they picked up at Party City...

"A Timeline of The Blue Devil"

1970's

http://library.duke.edu/uarchives/images/blue_devil_gallery/70sdevil.jpg

I'm in my 40's and graduated in 1983. So "the old mascot" has a whole different meaning for me than a lot of the "young whipper snappers" on this board.... ;)

I remember being very disappointed circa 1982 when they switched from the old "batman" Devil (the picture above isn't quite it, but is fairly close) to the big foam-head dude of the rest of the 80's and early-90's. I remember thinking "That isn't how a mascot is supposed to look. That's something you might see at Disney World." The Devil (and she-Devil) of the 70's/early-80's were more traditional in the sense of old-school college look out of the 50's, like something you might expect from the Ivies or on the old "Happy Days" TV show (Fonzy, et al). That was the same timeframe that they closed the old "student union" in the basement of the CI building - think very 1950's old-school small and cramped - and opened the Bryan Center. Duke was really growing up and getting more "photogenic" or TV-friendly. (Sigh.) Among the two MOST RECENT Devils, I think the late-80's/early 90's one looked more friendly and likeable to me.

Any votes for bringing back the she-Devil as a companion to the Devil mascot? I'm thinking not dressed similarly, but more in the tights/Batman mode of the late-70's. She definitely used to get a lot of attention...

The new one is growing on me.

I do like the 90s-era one. His head was so big that it required this huge sack to carry it around in. And when opposing schools would put him in their equipment room to change before a game, he could shove t-shirts, sweatshirts and shorts from said school into the gigantic sack. Then he could take them back and hand them out to the band on the bus after the game.

The new head is probably too small to get much more than a couple of shorts in the bag.

Not that any of the above ever happened. This is all purely hypothetical.

Must be top secret... but does anyone who is under the mascot uniform/costume? Student? Not a student? Whoever it is, does a great job. Very animated and always has something clever taped across his (I assume a he) head.

I'm pretty sure that multiple individuals are the Devil during a single season, and I'm also pretty sure they are students. Their identity is pretty ambiguous, at least from what I've seen on campus.
