Wow. Such an amazing amazing game. In the end, couldn't have ended better. I still say it was 8 vs. 5, but this is such a fantastic win for a team that I'm sure wanted to believe as much as anyone else, but who no one would have ever really expected it. I don't think I've ever been prouder of a Duke team, and I don't think I'm just saying that. This is the best group of guys this could have ever happened for.

btw, when K retires in about 20 years I might look to the other side of the court tonight for a new coach. nothing against our current slate whatsoever.

I'm leaving for vacation in Spain on Friday, and I'm sure the Spaniards will wonder why I'm grinning like an idiot. It's because my school is the best in the nation, baby!

As for Butler, they gave a valiant effort, were tough as nails, and should be incredibly proud of their performance. I have all the respect in the world for them, and if they weren't playing us, I would have been rooting so hard for them to cut down those nets. But I'm glad it was us in the end. Whew!

That is all!

This team faced every challenge, every opponent, every hurdle, in the face of a whole nation cheering against it and came out on top. You just can't say enough about how great these guys have been. The growth from the beginning of the season to the end, the recoveries from setbacks, the toughness in the face of physical, brutish play, the mental toughness to stay focused on the goal and stick together.

To quote Ronnie Lott, Man, isn't it great!

I LOVE THE WHOLE WORLD!

People talk about the Hoosiers comparison with Butler, okay.

But there is another story here worthy of a Hollywood movie, and that is the story of a young man not the most athletically gifted, plagued by injuries, stung by criticism from even the closest quarters, who perservered. And perservered. And perservered.

And on the biggest stage in college basketball found vindication and so became an object lesson for young people everywhere that the biggest ingredients in success are often hard work and grit.

Zoubek!!!!!

It's so great that one of the most likeable teams I have ever been a fan of won the national championship. From where these guys came from 4 years ago, it says so much about the character and class of Scheyer, LT and Z to stick with and believe in each other enough to get to this moment in time. Hopefully, our Jrs., Sophs and Freshmen will be able to carry this with them into next year. Hopefully they know how to spell "repeat"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It looked like he missed it on purpose almost? Even though Butler had no TOs left....

He definitely missed it on purpose, it was a line drive shot, not his normal free throw.

Smart play in my opinion - prevents a set-up for a Laettner shot, only 3.5 seconds left, and there may well be a couple of seconds elapsed as people scramble for the rebound, and the Butler players will not be in a coordinated position for a last shot.

Great coaching move, IMO.

Still in shock. When Butler had the ball on the last possession with 13 seconds to go, I was about to die; they were supposed to win right, like in the movies? But it wasn't! It was the Brian Zoubek movie! The Zoubster wins the game!

Great game by both teams; we played well, hard to believe it was so close.
Indeed, of all of them, this was K's best coaching job, hands down. What an ending.

Butler had no timeouts left and there were only 3.6 seconds left. It was right percentage play. If he makes it, they get the ball out of bounds and can run something resembling a play. As it was, they had a desperation heave. The odds of that shot going in were minuscule. Even if he'd made it, I would've said it was the right call. I agreed with it when I saw Z miss the FT on purpose.

Disagree....make it...go up 3 foul on the inbounds and make them make the 1st FT, miss the second then have to get the rebound and make a play.

If we had let them set up a play and organize themselves, the way the end of this game was winding down, they would have run the "picket fence" play or got the ball to Jimmy Chitwood for a shot and we have overtime with Hoosiers 2.

The missed FT surprised and wrong-footed Butler.

Also, we have seen before how teams trying to intentionally foul don't get the call and then the officials whistle them for a 3 pt shooting foul.

With the way this game was reffed, do you really want to rely on the refs not to give the Butler player (prob Hayward) a shooting foul for 3? That guy is automatic from the line.

No, we didn't want to put this game in the hands of the refs in the last second.

Yikes. We were about a quarter inch from having to see a shot over and over and over for the rest of our lives.

I think that would have replaced Christian's shot as the most famous shot in NCAA basketball history. I cannot say how happy I am it did not go down.

Its all statistics. As much as I hate being up only 1 with 13 seconds left. It is a damn good position to be in. And you are right, it would have DESERVEDLY so become the highlight reel video of a lifetime.

I had a huge debate about this at work as Vandy went down to Murray State to start the Tournament. I said I'd always take up one with a team that will play defense - I was the only one of the 3 who felt this way. Looks like the debate will be resumed tomorrow morning!

But what? were we afraid of overtime? If Zoubek makes that free throw there's no way we lose and we most likely still win in regulation. If he misses it, it's the same deal as missing on pupose, pretty much.

Had Butler's shot fallen I cannot imagine the criticism.

Mostly I agree with you, but the alternate argument would be that an intentional miss line drive gives you a better chance for a long rebound with tips and a scramble.

At first glance, I thought it was the wrong move. But now that I think about it, that ball can bounce anywhere off the rim and in that situation milliseconds of a loose ball is a luxury. They have 3 seconds. 3 SECONDS. Its hard to regroup and dish to a shooter for a half court shot off a rebound in that situation.

In the end, no matter what they were going to have to hit a 3. So who cares if we lead by 1 vs 2.

Butler's D was amazing tonight. They guarded the 3 pt line extremely well and made us second guess some of our perimeter moves.

We turned on the rebounding in the 2nd half - I think it might have been a 20-8 advantage 2nd half.

But we never should have given them the 2nd chance points in the first half. That reserve never should have knocked down 2 3 pointers either. And there''s no way they attacked enough to shoot a lot more free throws than us.

It was like the perfect storm for them and we still won!

I did not catch that live, but I saw it on the first replay. That was not a pick. That was a crackback block on a punt return. Nasty. In any other game at any other time of the game that get's called a foul. But even if the ref's saw it no way they would make that call.

I got caught off guard by the intentional miss. I would have felt better if Zoubs makes that. If he makes it, the worse thing that happens is a desperation shot forces OT. I thought it was a bad move, but it worked.

So who cares if we lead by 1 vs 2.
Difference is, if the halfcourt shot bounces in, we go to overtime (where our depth/size/conditioning gives us the distinct advantage, IMO) instead of losing outright.

If they had a timeout left I would agree with you. Enough time would tick off during the rebound, scrap, and re-inbounds to be worthwhile. But since they were going to have to improvise a play regardless, I'm not sure I like the risk.

Whatever you think of the decision, though, you have to love Z's defense on the final two drives. Reminiscent of Ali Bales...thankfully Hayward is no Tolliver ;)

Yeah, but also a chance of missing the rim altogether. He already made the first, seemed confident, and it would have been great to see Z knock down the 2nd and virtually seal the game (Z of all ppl, would have been great). I just see no downside.

Well, it's a trade-off. If you make the free throw, you don't lose on a 3 but they have a much better chance of making one, IMO, since they get to set up a play for the shot. By missing the FT, you greatly reduce their chances of making any kind of final shot and you even give yourself a shot at denying them the chance to even take one.

I have no doubt he did exactly what he was supposed to do. Like I said, it's a risk/reward proposition. You can either force them into an extreme low-percentage chance at making a shot, or attempt to eliminate them from any chance of beating you in regulation. Sort of the equivalent of going for 3 to win, rather than 2 to tie, on the road.

This team has left me speechless and completely exhausted. What a stellar performance against a truly stellar opponent. This is without a doubt the most emotional win since UNLV in 91. IMHO this team has over-accomplished more than any other Duke team, and Coach K has delivered the best coaching in his career. The fact that he was not in the Coach of the Year voting is a travesty.

And a word about the intentional free throw miss. That is crafty coaching at its best, and i feel sorry for those who don't see that. No time out, no time to think about it, just heave it up and see what happens. The fact that Butler almost made a ridiculous shot does not change the fact that that was one of Coach K's best calls EVER! Anyone who says otherwise really needs to stop and think about the entire situation.

I am so proud of this team and this coach and this school. Bless you all!

Anyone else feeling the resentment of a Duke championship from soooo many people?

How can anyone dispute the outcome of that game? Biased calls toward Duke? I don't think so. The heart that both teams played with? Evident in every possession.

I really think anyone hating on Duke for this win has a chip on their shoulder. This was a class game all around. There was no favoritism in my eyes from the officials towards Duke, just a scrappy game that someone had to win. Luckily, it was the good guys ;)

Our first half left me unhappy. We got out-rebounded and out-hustled. And they hit some shots that just seemed a step or two beyond what should be realistic.

Our second half was tough. It was the same as when we buckled down against Unc in CH, against Purdue and Baylor last weekend. We gutted that out.

But if the ball bounced our way more and the clutching and grabbing they did got called, we would have seized control. We were always a bucket away from grabbing this game and Butler dug in and the refs let them play. Whew. So stressful.

What would be the play of the game? I'm sure we can't really pick one but Jon's tip was unbelievable!

Jon's two inbounds plays where Z and Kyle scored quickly were huge.

It was a game of inches and we earned more inches than they did! We scrapped our way to a dozen second half plays that could each be play of the game.

Spot on. I think that's what happened, because if he was supposed to have intentionally missed the shot where are all the others getting the rebound?

I think the instructions were...

- If you miss the first, intentionally miss the second to burn time, surprise Butler and maybe even get the offensive rebound off the long bounce

- If you make the first, try to make the second. Then the best they can do is tie the game to go into OT

Just awesome! It has been loads of fun watching a bunch of guys who love their teammates improve from game to game. Where this team has come from the beginning of the season to tonight is remarkable and I can't remember the last time being a fan was this much fun.

Thanks to all of the 2010 Blue Devils, but especially Jon, Brian, Lance, and Jordan.

Zoubek intentionally missed the second free throw, as per instructions.

Happy Birthday, Brian! Thank you!

But what? were we afraid of overtime? If Zoubek makes that free throw there's no way we lose and we most likely still win in regulation. If he misses it, it's the same deal as missing on pupose, pretty much.

Had Butler's shot fallen I cannot imagine the criticism.

Please don't crush this post. I'm ecstatic, but really really confused.

Agreed. IMO, you have to handicap your overtime expectations on this. They never led by more than 2. Worst case scenario, they need a great play just to make overtime and then need to play great to win in OT. I'm feeling OK. Miss the free throw, worst case scenario, they need only one great play to win a game they haven't really led the whole night.

Ok so here it goes.

They pretty much had the optimum situation after the rebound. It was a sharp linear rebound. It could've easily skated off and wasted more than 2 seconds.

Im thinking K was hedging. In 100 situations, perhaps they get a good shot off 5 times. If we hit the freethrow, perhaps they get a good shot off 20 out of 100.

So is Andre Dawkins glad he graduated early? Ummm yeah. And if he doesn't make that shot at the end of the first half against Baylor, maybe we aren't here. Just saw him on the stage as I am catching up with the post game. Can't feel better for that kid. And we needed him. If not tonight, definitely Baylor to get here.

Reporter just acknowledged that Kyle got clobbered by Howard at the last second. Kyle stayed classy and just talked about watching the shot bounce out, not about Howard's cheap shot.

Moments like this are why I follow sports, and Duke in particular. The team developed so well throughout the course of the season and especially during the tournament itself. These kids are all winners, they've worked their butts off and deserve this success. It's been a wild ride... from G and Elliot leaving, Andre coming early, Mason breaking his wrist, the blowout at State, beatdown of North Carolina, and finally this amazing tournament run. This year has had so many wonderful memories and we have so much to be thankful as fans!

It did suck. CBS should bring back the David Barrett version and never use anything else.

Not just the musical production, but the video was awful. The first line, "the ball is tossed" always used to show the tip-off of a game..this year, we saw Jennifer Hudson. There were lots of close-ups of children, cheerleaders in too much makeup and Jennifer Hudson. Not many highlights from the championship game or of the winning team. It was such a great tournament, it's a shame that the tribute was awful.

Huge defensive plays by Brian at the end, altering the shot and then grabbing the rebound, HUGE plays a second apart, meanwhile Clark is yammering on about the amazing Butler offensive effort on the play. What game was that dude watching?

Gotta give it to Doug, he called this. A few days after his "alarmingly unathletic" comment, he did a 5-minute Subway Sandwiches video chat on ESPN.com and was asked "Does Roy get his third before K gets his fourth?" Doug hesitated and then answered that "I think K gets his fourth." At the time I thought it seemed too contrived... but it obviously worked out!

Here's to you Doug!

Coach K gave a lot of credit to Butler, however not a mention of Duke by the Butler coach. Not many Duke shots in the shining moment video...but so what! We da champs.

Jennifer Hudson's singing was so over the top and was a disgrace to the likes of Pendergrass and Vandross.

But if that's the only blemish on the night I'll take it 11 times out of 10.

So... this team's freshman year, we went to Virginia, and lost a game in overtime. In that game, Sean Singletary hit a game winning shot that was essentially identical to the shot that Hayward took tonight. He drove to the right side of the lane, and took a fadeaway 12-footer over the extended arm of Josh McRoberts. Tonight, Hayward drove to the right side of the lane and took a fadeaway 12-footer over the extended arm of Brian Zoubek. Singletary made his shot; Hayward missed his. Zoubs went down to the other end and took care of business, and this team came full circle, ending up with national title #4 in an excellently played basketball game over a high quality opponent. All I have to say is, GO DUKE!!!!!!!!!!

It worked out in the end, but I disagree with K here. I would much rather play 5 more minutes than leave the game in the hands of a half-court heave.

I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!

Way to go guys! That's 4 for K and Duke now. Wonderful!!

This team gave more, improved more, won more then we had any right to expect.

Kudos particularly to big Z. He is the reason this team made the great leap forward in late January.

Kudos also to Kyle. He also put it together after a tough early season stretch.

Contrats to Jon. He played wonderfully. He's just a winner.

Happy happy for Lance. He gave this team tough D, hustle and points in the second half.

Nolan, now you have a memory to go with your dad's trip to Indianapolis.

On a personal note, I'm really glad I got to watch this game with cousin Joe who provided me with about double my normal ration of beers to mellow me out as we watched the game. Otherwise I wouldn't have lasted to the end.

As to Zoub's missed FT at the end. I'm fine with that strategy.

Finally, Butler should be proud. This was a true championship game and both teams are winners.

I think we got several cheap shots tonight, and a lot of them all year. But, since we are Duke and have all these great advantages (??) we are expected to suck it up and take the hits. Which, of course, we do. Butler gave us their best shot (and it was a good one) and we still won. This is the way Duke legends are made.
In a way, I wish that JJ could have been a part of this team. However, I wonder how well he would have fit it. At Duke he was pretty much a one-dimensional player (but superb in that dimension). In the NBA, he has developed his body and his game, and is much more well-rounded.

Sure, but that's all the more reason to make the free throw. It's a half court heave for Butler regardless of what we do at the line. Between a half court heave to tie, and the same shot to win, I'd rather they be shooting to tie the game. We didn't give them any more difficult of a shot by Zoubek missing that free throw.

Congrats to the 2010 National Champions!

I was one of the guys who criticized Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek earlier in the year. This title wouldn't have been possible without them, especially Zoubek's transformation starting with the first MD game.

Congrats to all the other DBR posters and fans who I have followed this team with over the past few years.

Hopefully we get #5 next season with Kyrie, Seth, Kyle, and Nolan.

Somewhere in the midst of all the Butler fanboy stuff, the espn bloggers made a good point, Duke's timeout on the inbounds pass in the corner with 13.6 seconds left was huge. The guys forced a timeout, which was Butler's last. How much would Stevens have loved to have that back 10 seconds later?

Enough to not want to see one go in against us for the NC. Especially with the WIDE OPEN look he got. Ugh.

Great effort from this team tonight. They've been winning games like this all year - the gutty, gritty wins from teams that think they're going to out-tough Duke.

The way the game was being officiated really played into Butler's hands - they were able to push, grab, hand check and be that "feisty" mid-major team they've been all year. That really interrupted the flow of the Duke offense. But Duke squandered some chances to open the lead up several times and instead let Butler hang around.

What's great about this year's team is, in previous years, Duke would have probably lost this game. Instead, this team has all sorts of heart and that's what won it for them.

You have to give up something. K was bold and took the chance to win it. One thing I will say, I think not contesting that heave was the right move because ANY chance to call a foul on us there, I think the refs would've taken it.
