I'm 28 and I know all about him. Very flamboyant and seemingly likes to make calls for show... quick with the technical fouls. I'm not sure I see his presence as specifically being bad for Duke. He's just a bit of a loose canon.

Mmmmm.... maybe Huggie can get a technical for unsportsmanlike attire.

At least it's not Lenny Wirtz.

He was the Tar Heels' sixth man on the floor.

At least it's not Karl Hess. I don't recognize the final four refs except Les Jones and Jamie Luckey.

Nope, Valentine is only doing the title game so won't be seeing Huggie. ;)

Valentine has been a fixture in Final Fours for a while. He reffed Duke's 1991 and 1992 semifinal wins over UNLV and Indiana.

This is actually great news for all four teams. There's not an ounce of dead wood on that list.

Isn't Curtis Shaw the guy that stared down John Wall when wall complained (try to stay away from team-liking bias here). He's quite the hothead/quick whistle. I believe the head of NCAA officials also had to pay him a visit at half-time to discuss his officiating.

Duke has no say in who officiates. We just need to take care of business, hit shots, rebound and play lock-down defense.

I'm almost giddy at the chance to go to the champ. game, and have a chance to bring home #4. We would be ecstatic, carolina and uk fans (or anyone who hates Duke) would be pissed..love that, and ill get to see one of my favorite Duke teams win it all

Sorry to be slow. Is there a joke there that I'm not seeing, or are you simply disagreeing with my assessment of Luckie? Fine by me either way, just asking...

Expect Ted Valentine to ream Duke if we get the the final game.

IIRC, the games he refed for Duke this year were atrociously one sided against Duke.

How so?

WVU plays defense like a more athletic Purdue. If that game was called tightly, we would have been in the double bonus about 4 minutes into each half, given how grabby and hands on the players were on the perimeter.

Cool. The Wake game was definitely the most poorly officiated Duke game this season. To be fair, though, no one was any good that night. Happens.

As for Luckie, sorry, I don't know why anyone would be bothered by him. He's outstanding, and absolutely deserves to be working Saturday. I would be thrilled to see him on the floor at 8:57 EDT.

After CBS, the NCAA, the Selection Committee, and the Illuminati conspired to give us such an easy draw, do you think they'd job us on the refs in the FF?

In all seriousnesas -- that's a pretty strong line-up. It is up to our team to adjust to how they call games, not their job to adjust to how we like to operate. I'm comfortable with that line-up and with K's familiarity with them.

No excuses. GO DUKE!!!

And I would almost be willing to bet a years salary that there will be at least 1 replay review where he will be at the forefront of some controversial decision. He will get his airtime.

Wagering cash is strictly verboten in these parts, but sig bets are fine. So I propose the following: if you're right, I'll add a sig for a month that pays homage to your acute powers of officiating observation and prognostication--and I promise at least ten posts in the week following the Final Four. You can even help me come up with some clever language. If you're wrong, though, you will have to add a sig for a month admitting that you allowed your distaste for Valentine's style to cloud your judgment of his ability to call plays.

Deal?

If that's true, then why would K have called up the NCAA and specifically requested Valentine for this game? An unnamed source told me that Doug Gottlieb got confirmation of such phone call from one of the many discordant but also nameless voices in his head.

Fair Enough.........

But keep in mind....I am not saying that the guy is a bad official....just that it always seems that somehow he is getting his name mentioned or getting his mug on the TV due to some controversial call.
I have always thought that the best officiated games are when you pretty much forget the refs are there and after the game, you can't recall anything specific that they did. That usually means, they called the calls that need to be made, and let the others go.

Valentine doesn't really worry me. Of course, my most vivid memory memory of him was theatrically leaping to the scorers table to make a call while Paulus was on the floor being pummeled by FSU players.

The one that bothers me is Les Jones. It seems like in most of the Duke games that he does, he makes most of the really bad calls against Duke, for example, the Scheyer walk in the UMd game at Maryland.

I know people tend to like the "invisible refs", but in high pressure games like these I think its actually a good idea to have strong-willed, more high profile refs who arent afraid of controversy.

They are less likely to bow to the pressure and have a better chance of calling the game fairly. You want refs who arent afraid of making mistakes in big games like these. They are less likely to swallow their whistles and let Duke get abused.

He has stayed in the background and made very reasonable, consistent calls. In fact, in the UMd game at Maryland, I thought that the only two calls he really missed, he called in Duke's favor.

Interestingly, it appears that Eades (who is one of the officials doing Monday's game) has never officiated a game involving any of the Final Four teams.

We are getting the best refs available and we should only hope that the calls are fair and balanced. I'm sure they will try to do just that. If anything, all the negatives from commentators like Gottlieb, might cloud their judgment, but I think they will ignore even that nonsense and just call the games.

Indoor66
04-02-2010, 11:25 AM
I like to believe that the selected refs had integrity and will call the game they see, not the one they want to see. I don't think the commentators will create an environment that will dictate any outcomes.
