I'm pulling for BYU over Florida, and they're playing pretty well so far. An upset on 'Nova would be awesome, but would kill my brackets...not that I have them beating Duke, or even getting to the Duke game in some cases.

Then you might as well root for it, since it would probably kill the rest of the brackets in your pool just as much (if not more).

More importantly, it would remove one of our biggest obstacles to the Final Four. :D

BYU and ODU each did a good job at the end of the first half to comeback and not let them get away. Both games look to be close down the stretch.

Scottie Reynolds has been stone cold. He is 0-4 on field goals and 0-3 on three pointers. His 4 pts came from free throws. Nova better hope he heats up in the second half.

If Duke were to be in the WEST region, I would be afraid of facing BYU and the regionals because it would be a huge home court and fans advantage for them in Salt Lake City. Besides, Jimmer Freddette is playing his brains out. He has 18 and still seems to be warming up.

So I'm sitting here watching BYU and Florida, and I just noticed how little physical play there is. I don't watch much non-ACC ball whatsoever, but have noticed that the ACC has become unbelievably physical in the last few years. Lots of rough play. I just thought college basketball in general had gotten more physical, but this would seem to prove otherwise.

Anybody got any thoughts? I think it'd bode well for us if we didn't have to play our normal physical style of ball until we got into the deeper rounds. Maybe someone from Big 12 country can shed some light on this for me.

Bob Morris couldn't get a break from the refs in this one. It's not even that any one of those calls was so terrible in real time, but there were a ton of close calls that ALL went to Nova. At the end of regulation, Nova went to the line on every bump and Bob needed a jersey pull to get a call.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if the RM coach didn't roast the officials in his post game presser. It was horribly one-sided for the last 5 minutes of regulation and through the OT. The fact is this game would have never gotten to overtime if the refs didn't literally give the game to Nova. There were literally 4 calls on the offensive end for Nova that gave them 8 trips to the foul line in the last few minutes and 3 of the 4 calls were absolutely wrong. Then, on the defensive end, the refs let Nova foul a couple of times and get away with it. That team should be out of the tourney right now - period. What a crock.

Go Duke!

And for the record I'm not just blowing off steam because it was Nova (a perceived threat to Duke in the South bracket). I swear it's not that. Sam Houston State is really playing well against Baylor. They are playing a triangle and 2 defense and basically daring Baylor to take outside shots, which they aren't doing a great job of converting. Also, Baylor's best guard, LaceDarius Dunn, picked up his 4th foul at the 12 minute mark. This game could be another close finish.

Addendum: Baylor is running the antithesis of a motion offense trying to attack this triange and 2.

It's very similar. Quick feet, but he drags or shifts the pivot foot a lot with all those pump fakes and spins. He's producing though. He might cause some problems for Nova.

Unofficial rebounding margin with 6:48 remaining: 32 (St. Mary's) to 9 (Richmond). Insane.

The "late game heroics" were primarily by the Zebras. This was a HORRIBLY officiated game. The refs took the game and gave it it to the higher seeded Villanova. Two plays:

1. Bailing out Scottie Reynolds on the drive in regulation. It was clearly a jump ball. Moreover, officials almost never bail out a player who gets in the air without knowing what to do.

2. Whistling as a foul the other jump ball at midcourt. That had the further flaw of not involving movement at all -- it was out in the open for all to see.

Note that the refs were so embarrassed by their sins that they didn't T up Robert Morris coach Mike Rice, who did everything but throw a chair after both calls.

Disgusting!

sagegrouse
'Jim Sumner has quoted Everett Case as saying the most dangerous team in the ACC tournament is a team that plays poorly but still manages to win. Not sure that is the case with Villanova. I think Nova is going through some soul-searching, and I wouldn't be surprised to see St. Mary's gang of brawny Aussies take them down under'

Disgusting!

sagegrouse

These were two egregious calls among many bad ones in the last ten minutes that went to Villanova. The officiating was a travesty. The better team today was beaten by the refs. I'm waiting for the media outcry.

On the subject of refs blowing crucial calls in the end-game, how about the Notre Dame player tipping out the rebound while hanging on the rim? Even Jay Bilas chewed them out on air. Good thing ODU was able to hang on & win without the extra possession.

What do you guys think of Jay Wright's decision to bench Scottie Reynolds at the start of the game? He had a really bad game and that may have thrown him off his rhythm. For those that missed it, he was benched for failing to answer a question on the scouting report before the game, a minor infraction. Clearly, Wright was trying to encourage Reynolds to take all NCAA opponents seriously, but maybe he made a mistake?

Nah, the refs bailed out Villanova because they are weaker than Baylor who is the 3 and Duke needs the refs to keep bailing out Nova in their next 2 games so Duke gets to play the weakest 2 seed. It's all a conspiracy. Of course, if Baylor gets knocked off, Nova will no longer have officiating help and the refs will try to knock Villanova out to help Duke face the weakest elite 8 game.

Notre Dame has been the conferences second-best team for the past month. It lost to a #11 seed.

Villanova was bailed out by the refs as it tried to choke on a game with Robert Morris, a #15 seed.

Georgetown is getting throttled by the #14 Ohio Bobcats (no, not the Buckeyes).

#6 Marquette is struggling against the UDub Huskies.

I am putting an upset alert on Georgetown vs Ohio game. Ohio is leading 50 to 38 with 17 mins to go and is really balanced on the offsensive end. Big East is getting shafted in this tournament.

Every time I look up Ohio is nailing open shots. Maybe they play better defense in the MAC. I mean, if you look at Ohio's top 3 scorers' shooting percentages, they're not very good. The best of the top 3 shoots 40.3%.

I made a couple of posts on the "South Regional Discussion Thread" regarding the bashing Duke was taking and how some teams were hyped up but didn't have the resume for such hyping such as G-Town. I had to repost what I said because I just had to gloat since I sick of a lot of the G-Town love the past few weeks for a team as inconsistent at them. So my apologies and here they are, a bit trimmed down as follows:

"It's called the "eye test" by most of these idiots on ESPN, CBS or wherever. I know some are meticulous in their analysis but much of the analysis to me is knee-jerk. I have to say, if I hear the use of the "eye test" again, I think I will throw up. Some commentator used it regarding "X" team, saying they just look like a tourney team since they have a talented team, played well and beat a top team. To me another good example is G-Town. Don't get me wrong, I think they are a good team, obviously tourney worthy but this recent love fest is idiotic just because they pass the "eye test" to many. Why? Because they beat Duke, Cuse and Nova? Because they have a multi-talented big man in Monroe and two very good perimeter players in Wright and Freeman? Could very well be!!! But look closer and you see losses to South Florida, Rutgers and Old Dominion, two of which were at home. These are the tell-tale signs of a inconsistent team. Are they capable of the Final 4? Yes, but they could get upset in 2nd round just as easily. Commentators, please try to equally critical of other teams as you are of Duke. I know Duke bashing sells and if you want to bash Duke just a bit more, then fine but throw the criticism around a bit and stop the piling on."

AND

"Have to agree. For example, what makes Baylor "lesser" than G-Town in the eyes of the experts? I think G-Town is very good but the love affair with them the past two weeks is a bit nauseating. I know they are a Big East team but this is also a is a jekyl and hyde team who one minute looks great against Duke and then next looks horrible verse South Florida. And this just didn't happen only one time this season and has been their "thing" the past 2 to 3 years. As easily as G-Town could go deep in the tourney, don't be suprised to see them bumped over the weekend. Baylor is a very good athletic, attacking team. I don't know much about them but I know that they have very good, quick guards and a fly swatter of a big man in the middle. Just because a team isn't on ESPN 10 times a year, doesn't make them "unqualified". "

"Another one thing that bothers me is the "experts" being critical of Duke is in the areas of depth and letting teams hang around. Cuse is even more thin but yet they do not get nearly as criticized as much as Duke, same for OSU and G-Town as they both only go 6-7 deep and your here barely a "boo" compared to the "shouts" of Duke's lack of depth. Even Baylor and Kansas go no more than 8 deep. I know developing a bench is important but I think it has been over played a bit on Duke. And how many times did we see Kentucky squeak one out? At least 6 times this season but yet Duke scratches and claws its way through. OSU and G-Town had it share of close ones too. Just goes to show you how much the "experts" like to use Duke as the lightning rod for conversation and critique."

Ok, fellas. Sorry for the long post but I just found it ironic that I kind of foreshadowed this. I have to say though, I did give G-Town a bit too much credit, they didn't even make it to this weekend....hahahahahahahaha

Gotta love the tourney!!!!

Has anyone noticed in these upsets today the play of guards? I've been working today so I haven't seen the games but it seems from the box scores that the guards for the underdogs are carrying a huge load for their respective teams (20/30+ points). Thankfully, I think Duke has enough size and experience (although a bit lacking in depth) at guard to hopefully not have this happen to us. I just thought it was interesting...

WRAL the Raleigh CBS station has their primary channel (5) and then they have the alternate Digital-TV stations (5.1, 5.2, 5.3). They put all four live games on the separate channels. TimeWarner Cable in Raleigh/Durham carries all four WRAL channels. Wake's big guys will not get pushed around by Patterson and Cousins, Wake just needs to play smart and not get their bigs fouled out.

Ish Smith is as fast a guard as Kentucky has seen all season.

The big question is whether Wake can play with intelligence and poise. I don't think they can afford to do things like run the baseline on an out-of-bounds ball and turn the ball over against Kentucky.

It's great for Wake that Aminu finally showed up - he's been the invisible man in a lot of games down the stretch.

I really like the way Wake matches up against Kentucky.

Wake's problem has been just not playing smart basketball. They have all the right pieces, if they use them.

One other encouraging note for Wake - at the end of the game, Wake did a better job of finding their shooters when Ish was stopped in the lane. In the Wake - UNC game, Ish, one of their worst 3-ball shooters, made little effort at the end of the game to find their good shooters and just jacked up wild threes himself. That problem seems to have been fixed.

GREAT to see the ACC start off really well, and most certainly to see the Big East do so poorly. Let's hope the trend continues!

Part of me wants to see all the other ACC teams succeed tomorrow, but the other part of me really wants Greivis to go away for good.:(

Wake won that game?

Dang, I gave up on them when they went down by 8 in overtime. After seeing LD Williams travel on an inbounds play with 12 seconds left in regulations, it looked like "some old Wake" to me.

Nice comeback and quite a game by Ish Smith. Go ACC.

Waking up this morning, pondering the events of yesterday, I started wondering to myself if I'd just seen the best opening day ever in the NCAA tournament. I lost track...3 overtime games, how many big game winning shots, upsets, the Big East getting universally punked... Then I saw ESPN.com's home page and felt a little dirty that they were calling it the best opening day ever.

Am I succumbing to ESPN hyperbole in my own mind?

Where did Thursday stand in NCAA tournament opening round lore?

Whether or not it was indeed the best opening day ever for the NCAA tourney, I think we can all appreciate the fact that we just got treated to 12 hours of fantastically entertaining basketball.

Absolutely amazing day. Upset galore! Too bad Nova or Baylor didn't fall, but oh well!

GO DUKE!

I don't remember anyone in the papers, at espn or anywhere else -- including on this website -- who seriously challenged the notion that the Big East was the best conference this year.

Well, since there's a certain Big East team potentially in prime position to save much of the conference's face in a possible Sunday matchup, I'm reserving comment until the first weekend is in the books.

I looked at my watch and concluded that Wake didn't have a chance to come back and that it was 1-1/2 hours past my normal bedtime so I turned off the game and went to bed. It appears that I missed a terrific ending to an exciting first day.

That was a great start to the weekend! If only Sam Houston State, San Diego State, and Bob Morris could have pulled it off it would have been even better. My brackets are officially busted.

I don't know if that is hyperbole or not. That was an amazing first day of the tournament. The Northern Iowa shot to win (which I joked to my best friend was deep enough to be a four-pointer) was a highlight, as was the Ish Smith shot, BYU's Fredette, 3? overtime games, I think as many upsest as not upsets? What a day!

P.S. I remember the last 14 vs. 3 upset in 2006 (Northwestern Iowa or something) and that being an amazing game and day I believe as well, but I doubt it topped this one. I'm sure Jim Sumner or Olympic Fan could probably come up with a better day, but I can't think of one.

You're welcome to your own feelings. I think everyone is in agreement that that was one heck of an opening day! ESPN is just doing what they always do. In this case, I don't think enough can be said about the excitement every fan was feeling (outside of the losers) after all of those great moments.

I don't know about "best ever", but it was the best one in recent memory.
