Here we go! I'll be putting up regional threads as the show proceeds. Kansas overall #1

Houston, baby! Need to win that 8/9 game in second round. I am going to go ahead and count my chickens on the first round.

The only objective way Syracuse should have been ranked ahead of us is losses. I don't see anything wrong with us jumping them. None.

I do NOT like Joe Lunardi's bracket that had us out West with Notre Dame, Tennessee and WVU.

Those are NOT good match-ups for us!

The Orange lost their last reg and didnt win a single Tourne game.Onaraku is done for the year.

Duke was the CLEAR choice as the third #1. Its not even close

Syracuse has to draw Ohio State or Kansas State. Assuming that West Virginia is more highly ranked than KState, Duke will draw them. Right?

Further, if West Virginia was ahead of Ohio State, Duke would have drawn them as the 4th number one any way.

GoingFor#5
03-14-2010, 05:07 PM
I agree that we should be the 3rd #1. In fact, I would like to see a rule (will never happen) that if you don't win your conference tourney, you don't get a 1 seed (unless there are 2 1 seeds from your conference). I'm sick of seeing these teams fall like dominoes in conference tourneys and then these "analysts" come to their defense based on a "body of work," ignoring the heart and determination of teams that go for banners. Conference tourneys are NOT exhibition games.

I actually doubt it; WVU had to be #5 on the S-curve.

I think this is great news not only for Duke but the ACC Tournament as well. People on this board were questioning the importance of the ACC Tourney...and this clearly shows that it's still important. Great Job Committee and Seth Davis can suck it!

Somebody needs to tell Seth Greenberg Einstein's definition of insanity. You want to play in the tournament, schedule somebody out of conference - period.

Virginia Tech also played the an easy ACC schedule, going 0-2 against Duke and Maryland. Wake beat Maryland, and had nonconference wins over Gonzaga, Xavier, and Richmond, who made the field of 64.

Baylor will be a tough match-up in Houston. Baylor doesn't even have to travel far in the first round (New Orleans).

We don't play until Friday, which gives us more time to rest. Works against Louisville, who haven't played a game since Wednesday, when they lost to Cincinnati.

I don't mind Cal as the 8, and hope they beat Louisville. ND got hosed in our bracket, doubt we get to see them and that is good. They pass well and would give us trouble with pick and rolls, we don't recover fast enough.

Texas against Kentucky in the SECOND ROUND? You think the committee is setting Calimari up for an early exit? I will bet there were some evil laughs when they did that!

Everyone has known for a couple of years now that if you decide that in your OOC schedule you are only going to play the little sisters of the poor, that is going to cost you on selection Sunday.

That was classy of Seth not to dump on another team that he might think should be left out.

Funny and good point ... although I admit, I wasn't aware of VT's OOC. Bilas just nailed that point home as well. Perhaps VT needs to get a better travel agent? The expansion argument was hilarious when Knight asked if Carolina would be like the 96th team in. Too funny.

They aren't supposed to do that for regionals (just the pods). If the brackets are done like the tourney claims they are, the top 8 was:

Did anybody hear Bob Knight's comment on the selection committee? Basically he questioned the basketball expertise of people on the committee. Pretty harsh. I initially attributed it to his usual snarkiness, but then I started to wonder. The committee is obviously making decisions requiring a lot of specialized knowledge. For example, how good is Purdue without Robbie Hummel? How good is Syracuse of Orinze Onuaku can't play? Given the committee is made up mostly of folks on the administrative side (ADs, etc) are they really any more qualified than you or I to make such evaluations? (well, yes, but for the sake of argument...)

Not generally a fan of his, but Dickie V had a classic line tonight when talking about the insanity of the bubble discussion if they expanded to a field of 96. "Would Connecticut be #97, would UNC be #97?" Hubert was squirming. Loved it.

Newton_14
03-14-2010, 07:15 PM
I know lots of folks here hate Va Tech but in my opinion they got royally screwed today. For one, their OOC schedule was not as bad as people are making it out to be. I know the RPI was low there, but in fairness to Seth, he scheduled several BCS teams that are normally good enough to be in the top 100 but ended up having down years unexpectedly. He cannot control that. He also chose to play a couple of the weaker teams at their place for a true road game rather than staying at home.

And unbalanced schedule or not, they still finished 3rd in the ACC, and even though they lost their 1st round ACC Tourney game, it went to the wire, and the ACC teams below them that made the Big Dance all lost their 1st Rd ACC Tourney games as well with the exception of Ga. Tech.

There is no way Wake should be in over Va Tech. I think putting Florida in over them was really bad too.

I missed the interview but good for Seth that he handled the snub with class.

I agree with Bobby Knight, get these administrators off of the committee and put people on their that truly understand basketball. It should be made up of former coaches with maybe a few AD's or even retired refs...

No. If you have ESPN iNsider, I recommend you go back and read Lunardi's article about geography and seeding from about two weeks ago. If you don't have iNsider, then take my poor man's explanation, which was also covered in the "bid for the No. 1 seed" thread at length:

Geography matters for s-curve seeding, and will take precedence so long as the regions remain relatively balanced overall and there are no early conference clashes. It's not a snake-style seeding process, despite the common belief. The committee goes down the 1-seeds and places based on geography, which would look like this:

1. Kansas - St. Louis
2. Kentucky - Syracuse
3. Duke - Houston
4. Syracuse - SLC

Then the two seeds:

5. WVU - Syracuse
6. Ohio State - St. Louis
7. Villanova - Houston
8. Kansas State - SLC

The fact that WVU is going to Syracuse is strong evidence that they had a higher s-rating than Villanova, regardless of which 1-seed either seed is paired with. If Villanova were higher, they would have been rewarded with the closer region.

At least, according to Joe Lunardi's explanation of the committee's method... :)

Not generally a fan of his, but Dickie V had a classic line tonight when talking about the insanity of the bubble discussion if they expanded to a field of 96. "Would Connecticut be #97, would UNC be #97?" Hubert was squirming. Loved it.

What seeds did unc and uCon get? Which bracket?

I'm looking but I can't find them.

Maybe if I stop laughing it will be easier.

I know the problem - you're watching the wrong show! See ESPNU at 9 pm eastern.

Will UNC be the VaTech of the NIT? Will Roy be as classy as Seth if he is left out?

Now that the selection show is over and we have a thread for discussion of each region, I'm going to go ahead and close this one. If anyone has a good reason to re-open it, let me know via PM.
