There are only 10 active college coaches with NCAA championship rings. Five are in danger of missing the tournament. So much for experience.

Mike Krzyzewski (3)

Tom Izzo

Gary Williams

Jim Boeheim

Bill Self

Jim Calhoun (2)

Roy Williams (2)

Billy Donovan (2)

Rick Pitino

Tubby Smith

Sad to note that Coach K owns the oldest ring of the group. All before 1991 are no longer coaching.

You know, considering they give out a ring every year, I am always surprised when I see how few people have actually won them!

I would give my left leg for K to get one more before retiring.

Don't forget Steve Fisher, who won the title with Michigan in 1989 (substituting for Bill Freider).

Coach Fisher is at San Diego State, and has been for the last decade.

My bad! Steve turns 65 next month but he looks about 85! I thought he retired last year. He coached in three championship games.

So, 11 coaches with rings, 6 in danger of missing the dance.

And Coach K's 1991 ring is NOT the oldest! That makes me feel a little better.

At least one ring-winner is an active blogger. Who still can't get over one loss from 19 years ago (http://www.lasvegassun.com/blogs/shark-bytes/2009/dec/30/we-would-have-beat-duke-matt-othick/). (And whose headline writer needs a grammar lesson.)

Well, I'm not sure you can count NAIA Northwood University coach Rollie Massimino, but he is the active head coach there.

OK

Of the 11 active Division 1 college coaches with NCAA championship rings coaching teams eligible for the NCAA tournament. Six are in danger of missing the tournament.

Personally I still count vacated appearances.

Speaking of old, time does not seem to have been a friend of Nolan Richardson:
