According to an SI article, Duke's bad loss to Georgetown may POSSIBLY keep the Holes out of the tournament if they are on the bubble. I can't imagine a better silver lining to a horrible loss. ;)

We can only hope it comes true.

"Maryland (13-6, 4-2, RPI: 50, SOS: 53) lost at Clemson on Sunday night and handed the auto bid back to Duke."

Ugh!

Why do people that should know better say stupid things like that?

It's just how he assigns the auto-bids. He's not actually saying that Duke would get the auto-bid for being 1st in the ACC. It's just a way to take into account that the automatic bid might give some team a bid that they might not otherwise deserve. If you just assume the best team in a conference will get the automatic bid then you have a lot more bubble teams making it in.

This is just a function of how he does the brackets. Because we don't yet know who will win the conference tournament, he gives the automatic bid to the team with the best conference record as a proxy. He's fully aware that the ACC auto bid doesn't go to the team with the best record.

well, the tourny champ is an "auto-bid"...

Right. But that is what he is saying. The way he does his projection is to assume whoever is currently in 1st Place will win the tournament and get the auto-bid. He is not saying it will happen, he just notes the current leader as the winner of the auto-bid to then project how many at-large teams from the conference will make it in.

A better example might be the Colonial Athletic Conference where George Mason has the CAA best record but ODU, VCU and NE are better with repect to RPI, Sagarin etc. CAA gets at most two teams in unless George Mson wins their tourney as league standigs could imply.

Slightly different twist in PAC-10 where Washington might have better though rapidly sliding metrics but Caifornia and Zona lead the league. P10 only deserves one if Cal wins P10 tourney but Lunardi has Zona in too.

Most of the other conferneces the league leader also has the better metrics, now that UK beat Vandy to tie for first.

Carolina doesn't need Duke's help to miss the tournament. They'll pull it off on their own.

But we like to be helpful at Duke!

Agree. And I hope the only way we help the holes miss the tourney going forward is to beat them down 2 or 3 times on the court!

What kind of banner do you think they'll put up when they don't make it to the Tournament? A Good Effort Banner?

It's more likely they go back a 100 years or so in history and find a season where they went undefeated in the South region and delcare it a "title" of some type and hang a banner for that...

Yeah, but you gotta go back at least 70 years so to do it so that, hopefully, nobody will remember what a farce you're trying to pull off. At least you can trust the local media to be complicit...
