That FSU Fan

I sit in section 1, so I was treated to a decent view of his antics, looking at him across the graduate section. What a maroon.

The obnoxious FSU fan (henceforth, Harry Potter) actually was there with three buddies, two to his left, and one to his right-- a total of four, not three, like the N&O blog said. Each had variants of FSU colors on.

It's hard to capture how obnoxious this guy was. He stood up constantly, he gestured dismissively and melodramatically about everything. He was also... not exactly fat, but let's say he covered a lot of space, particularly since he was wearing an FSU striped shirt that draped a lot like one of those hockey jerseys.

On several occasions he was saying stuff and flailing at officials while they were only feet away. And by "feet," I mean, TWO feet-- he was that close. One of the officials said some stuff back to Harry during a stoppage while Harry was doing this act, and Harry just kept on going.

A few minutes after that, one of the stadium officials wearing those yellow jackets talked to him during another stoppage, and Harry's demeanor was very dismissive, like he was blowing the guy off.

A few minutes later, someone wearing much more upscale garb-- a suit, maybe-- talked not to Harry, but one of the other FSU fans (henceforth, Ticketmaster, as my theory was that THIS was the guy who was actually given the tickets by Duke's sports office). Ticketmaster nodded much more respectfully, and after the Duke official left, he talked with Harry Potter. Harry Potter's demeanor was that of a guy being asked by a friend to dial it down a notch lest Harry's friend got in trouble. After this, Harry Potter quit standing up, so I think he was explicitly told that if he stood up again he'd be escorted out or something. The undergrads engaged with Harry Potter for awhile, and he gestured back and waved and looked to be yelling but he DID NOT STAND UP.

The FSUers returned from halftime, but were gone by the second timeout. I didn't actually see them leave, but my brother (who was next to me) said he saw them kind of gather up and split, with no sort of escort, so it looked like they were just going to finish boozing it up somewhere.

By the way, the students held up a sign that said "Cab Home Safely." Pretty funny, but can we PLEASE get the word out there than anything remotely related to "drive home safely" really ought to be taken off the agenda? I know it's easy to forget, particularly since we aren't using the sheets anymore, but whatever it takes, folks.

I don't get it, what's wrong with saying "drive home safely" normally. (I get the "cab home safely" thing - these guys were drunk, but under normal circumstances whats wrong with "Drive Home Safely"?)

I think he is saying we should suspend that cheer in an effort to be sensitive to the Dawkins family.

I think it is fine. It was good to suspend the chant for awhile, but that time has passed.

It is kind of like when Duke and UNC played shortly after the Eve Carson tragedy. GTHC was suspended for the game, but with time it became appropriate again.

I also thought the crazies engaged this guy well. After the required "sit, sit, sit" they got a lot more creative. My favorites were:

"10 points from Gryffindor!" - after one of the visits from a stadium official

"Harry wants his shirt back!" - it really did look like a shirt from one of the movies.

I also heard from someone else at the game that the Blue Devil grabbed one of the court mops and was doing his best Quidditch routine on the court. I didn't see it.

The Devil did go stretch out across the vacated seats after Harry and his pals departed.

I would have thought Ol' Roy would have gotten them the seats, told them to go absolutely bonkers... and hope that Duke, Coach K, etc would kick them out. Then, he can say "see, not only me"... :D

Anyone know how they got those tickets? Those were handicapped seats way back when I was in the grad student section. I know a good deal has changed about who sits where since then, but still, those aren't seats you just grab off of stubhub I wouldn't think. A

Also, in the second half, four completely different people were sitting in those seats.

To be clear, we were not kicked out. However, they didn’t make it easy for us to be good FSU fans. A little background, all 4 of us went to FSU together (1987 grads) and every year we try to attend an FSU road game. We like to see different campuses and different traditions. We cheer and have a lot of fun. One of our friends got these seats through a business partner so we were preped as "how to act". Cheer for FSU, not against Duke. At no time did we use profanity, get personal with Coach K (or the players), and we were not on the court (towel guys and ESPN camera guys were in frount of us at any given time).

However, apparently standing and cheering as a “road fan” is highly discouraged. It seemed as during every dead ball a member of security reprimanded us for standing after made baskets and cheering. It got to be too much to deal with and we knew it was going to end up with us getting kicked out. We didn't want to embarrass our friend (who got the tickets), our selves, or our school.

The “Cameron Crazies” were GREAT. They got on me (us) pretty hard, but it was all in good fun (nothing personal), as shown on the video. We couldn’t stop laughing!! Unfortunately, after 4 minutes of the second half we had been chastised for the last time so we left on our own.

Don’t know why they treated us like that…was it the administration, over zealous security, Coach K, or the old stodgy Alums? We'll never know. But it was a blast while it lasted!

Even the refs came by and had a laugh. We knew we would be in the crosshairs, but we never got ugly or nasty about it…we laughed and had fun.

You however say things like, “It's hard to capture how obnoxious this guy was. He stood up constantly, he gestured dismissively and melodramatically about everything”. If I was a Duke fan, I would be passionate…right?! Then you feel compelled to get personal and call me (us) names like you are a twelve year old (maroon, weight jokes…etc.). I suspect that you went/are going to Duke, and therefore, YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT! You shouldn't feel the need to sink to that inmature level.

I'm sure your actions would be MUCH different if you were at a road game cheering Duke.

Welcome to the boards. Good luck in the Dean Dome - both for your team and not getting kicked out.

Just a comment on the standing - it may have been a problem for the people behind you. (I don't know if you had someone behind you or not.) I used to ask the people in front of us at Arrowhead (KC Chiefs football stadium) to keep their standing to a minimum as they blocked my father's view. He was not physically able to stand frequently to see. Besides, they were in the front row and didn't need to stand to see a play. Standing and cheering briefly is one thing but if the next play is going on, you are preventing the person sitting behind you from seeing.

The only other time I have seen someone sitting in those seats get spoken to by an official was a Maryland fan who stood up the whole game. I think that is fine to do, but there was a handicapped kid directly behind him who could not see due to his standing, and the MD fan refused to sit down. I think they eventually just traded seats.

I know a lot of handicapped and elderly people sit there, so maybe thats why officials are a lot more sensitive about standing. I know in all other areas you can pretty much do what you want...the 'Crazies are pretty good about policing opposing fans.

Sounds like you guys had a decent time, and I'm glad you didn't force the issue. Raise hell in the Dean Dome for me.

A couple notes. . .

The ref actually warned this guy twice to sit down. Thats not security, nor is it anyone associated with Duke. I did say on multiple occasions though to those around me that "I hope we don't kick this guy out", and was glad to see that we didn't. I took issue with some of the calls he gesticulated about, but whatever, thats his choice. To me, you lose credibility when you complain about EVERY call against your team. I for one only complain about calls that are actually questionable and go against my team, but I understand thats not something that all fans do. I didn't have a problem with what he was saying or doing. He DID seem awfully intoxicated, but I wasn't exactly sober for the game myself (same goes for a LOT of the crazies, so lets not use this as an excuse to say that he deserved to be mistreated or kicked out).

The reason securitywas on you TBoneFSU was the standing up part. I must explain, in that section, its not just opposing fans that get this treatment. People in those seats aren't supposed to stand up. I stand behind that section. They ask ANYONE who is constantly standing to sit down. In most sections, yeah, if someone in front of you stands up, you can always just stand up to see over them. Tough cookies. Real fans stand up, I get that. However, the unique nature of that section is that the back two rows are for the HANDICAPPED. They don't always have that option. Nobody will ever kick you out of Cameron for being loud. You are hardly the first loud opposing fan to come into Cameron.

Next Stop: The Dean Dome...we my not make it to the second half!!

Assuming the same "performance" at the Dean Dome, I'd say the over/under would be a non-voluntary departure around the 2nd-3rd TV timeout, especially if you manage to get seats equally as close to the court (quite a fete there, as seats like those require $10K+ in donations...). Just make sure Coach 'ole Huck can hear you. You WILL be heard there, as the fans only stand up and/or cheer vs Duke, NCSU and maybe MD (or KY). Have you been to MD/Comcast yet? From experience, I think you'll find Comcast and Dean Dome to be MUCH less tollerant (the fans in general) than Cameron. Good luck.

P.S. I know that the environment is different there, but do you really believe that someone going so far out of their way to "get noticed" while rooting for the visitors at FSU (Tucker) whould face less hosility?!? Really?? (Not from what I have seen at the Tucker Center...)

Frankly, I fill out my shirt more than strictly necessary myself. I offer my sincere apology if my fairly oblique remarks bothered you so much.

For a guy who likes to go to opposing team games attracting attention, though, you sure are sensitive. And seriously, if "maroon" seems harsh to you, you really should avoid the internet.

I'm not sure it's fair to call me a hypocrite based on my hypothetical actions, but hey-- all in good fun.

Despite my apology for my other remarks, my description of obnoxious was entirely accurate. Certainly that's a subjective call, but I saw obnoxious. It would have been obnoxious had it been a Duke fan acting that way, although I'll grant it would have irked me less.

I did NOT see officials talking to you at every stoppage. You were talked to once by a basketball referee, once by the yellow-jacketed security person, and once by someone in a suit. The discussion with the referee I saw was clearly not "friendly and in good fun."

I may have missed an interaction, but your description is clearly inaccurate and self-serving. Do you dispute anything I said substantively?

FWIW, no, I didn't go to Duke. I'm just a mid-forties dude from Durham who roots for the home team, and who's been going to games since the 70s.

But thanks for the compliment. And seriously, no hard feelings. I suspect you're not a bad guy to have a beer with, and I think you might feel the same way about me, as long as we discussed something else. :)

My (our) sincere apologies, if anyone (and I mean anyone) would have told us that we were blocking the view of handicapped attendees we would have complied immediately. You have my word!! Unfortunately, that message was never conveyed. We may be obnoxious (or passionate. It sounds less threatening.) fans, but we are decent, good natured people. Again, my apologies.

Alteran, I had to be creative to pull you out of the woodwork. I’m really not that sensitive, as seen by my reaction to the Crazies. Nothing personal. The intent of my post was to set the record straight regarding many questions. There were several conspiracy theorists out there. We can’t blame everything on Roy (we were not a plant)!! I don’t make it a habit to cause hysteria on other team’s message boards. Again, I was taught to “cheer for my team, not against the other team”.

I agree, I think most of us on this board are probably cool enough to have a brew with...especially if we were on the same side of the issue. Passionate vs. Obnoxious is all in the eyes of the beholder (and the team you cheer for)!

I think we can all agree, most (if not all) officials stink when the calls go against your team.

Be good, and good luck. Cameron was great!! Hope to see you at the ACC tourney!

Undergrad at the game here. I did see the refs interacting with HP + crew amicably at one point, and I dispute the fact that all of the people sitting on the baseline are handicapped. If you've ever been to a game in person in Cameron, you must know there are plenty of fully capable folks that sit in those expensive seats.

Thanks for clearing that up, but handicapped or not, standing up is prohibited, especially to the extent HP was doing it. And why do you assume that everyone who goes to Cameron is looking out for wheelchairs in the baseline seats? I'm gonna bet that most people are more concerned with the game. Anyway, HP seems like a good guy. Can't fault him too much for getting caught up in the moment. Cameron has that effect on people!

Agreed completely. We got plenty of shots at him because it was convenient, but no opposing fan who was simply caught in the moment deserves being treated like crap. I've been on the receiving end of things, 2 years ago in DC surrounded by WVU fans with my mom (hell, one of my friends in the band that day got spat on through half the game by a WVU fan right behind her)... and I'd like to think we're better than that.

On occasion I am given seats upstairs, near mid-court, at about the free-throw line. Awesome seats. I usually don't stand, even though I have been yelled at by the crazies for remaining seated, and criticized on this board (not personally, just part of the general criticism made toward the upstairs folks) for remaining seated. Why do I remain seated? Because I look behind me and notice that the folks behind me can't stand for extended periods of time because of either advanced age or for medical conditions.

I do understand getting "caught up in the moment". I do understand the excitement of being in a great arena. When I have seats where I wont' be blocking the views of others I do stand (and often stand for entire football games, giving up my "good seats" for lesser ones just so I can do so). But there is no excuse for not taking the five seconds it takes to look behind you. There is no excuse for standing when the person from who you are taking away a view of the game is old, infirm, or handicapped. "I didn't know" is a lousy excuse when it only takes a few seconds of awareness to find out. Being "caught up in the moment" happens once or twice - not continually throughout a game. There is a regular and fine poster on this baord who can't take his son to a game because the ignorant glass-bowls in front of him won't remain seated long enough for his wheelchair-bound son to see the game.

I'm not directing this toward FSU fan (I'll assume he is a nice guy), but toward folks in general. The elderly and the handicapped are invisible in our society. Being "caught up in the moment" is not a valid excuse for being insensitive and rude to others. We can and should do better.

Seriously, man... don't play this, "Whoa is me, everyone was against us, because we were opposing fans," garbage. Opposing fans come into Cameron all the time. Opposing fans cheer for their teams all the time. The Crazies chant "sit sit sit" at them all the time. What most opposing fans don't do before the game is get tanked to the point where they're almost stumbling onto the court.

From my vantage point... two rows behind you... you (or one of you) didn't even know what was going on in the game. That was evident when there was an over the back call on Duke which you greeted by jumping out of your chair and slamming you hands to your hips in an attempt to mimic a charge call. Of course, it wasn't a charge, but hey... details, right?

You guys were spoken to by security due to the fact that you engaged the refs from a close distance, and because the stadium officials thought, from action and odor, that you'd been drinking heavily. Don't roll in a speak ill of the Cameron staff and act like you were singled out without cause. That staff works those games tirelessly, and in over a decade of attending games, I've never seen security have to deal with someone multiple times as they did with you.

(1) Based strictly on HP's posts, I did not detect any whoa is me "garbage."
(2) Being a knowledgeable basketball fan is not a prerequisite for admission into CIS.

Hmmm... odd. I didn't know that K'Ville was filled with opposing team's fans before games. Furthermore, undergrads and grad students are able to hold their liquor pretty damn well most of the time. As a former member of each group, I can say that my tolerance was much higher when I was a member of those groups.

More to whit... there is a certain level of respect that should be shown before entering the opposing team's arena. I've been to a number of away games for Duke, tOSU, etc. When its a true away game (not a neutral court) I think you're responsibility as a fan of the opposing team is to represent yourself and your school in a good light. That means toning down the drinking before hand. I'll be the first to admit that I enjoyed my share of pre-game cocktails before home games, but I can honestly say that I cut that out when entering an opposing team's house. You know why? There's no reason to draw attention... and drawing attention on foreign soil makes it more likely that someone might take you out.

Exactly right. When you enter someone else's house (I use 'house' as a metaphor for arena, stadium, dome, hall, center, coliseum, and, literally, house), you don't act like an idiot. Ever. You are a guest. I don't care how much money you spent on tickets, that does not justify any negative or boorish behavior. Ever.

Hey MulletMan and 91Devil, way to end the love fest. I came on you board to “clear the air”…not to “whoa is me”! There were so many Duke fans theorizing about why we were there, if we got kicked out, were we planted by Roy…that I thought it would be cool to save everyone some sleep, or having some crazed Dukie break Roy’s other arm.

Quite frankly, I think by just being at Cameron, wearing that ugly sweater, and passionately cheering FSU demonstrates that I’m not afraid to ruffle some feathers. Look at the vid, do you honestly think I was worried about anyone “taking me out”. Please…It was fun, and funny…and that’s what we went there for, to have fun.

91Devil…negative or boorish behavior? When did you graduate, 1891? Since when is laughter, and The Crazies joking with us negative or boorish behavior?

Mullethead…You must be a cop with your keen eye for the impaired. If so, you are a terrible officer.

Hey, I realize the Duke Fan holds the Great Cameron Indoor Stadium in high regard…and so do I. However, I also see it as a place for fun. You’ve seen the world renown antics of the Cameron Crazies, haven’t you? Duke markets the Crazies as the funnest, most passionate fans in America.

You, my dear friends, are why I say that negative/boorish fans are just like passionate/fun fans…they just have a different colored sweater. It’s obvious, if I were lucky enough to be a Duke student/grad I would be a Cameron Crazy….and, well, you are a very serious fan. Don’t hurt yourself breaking down the Box and One.

Don’t hate guys…life is too short, and your team is too good! Enjoy it while you can!

TBone....I wasn't talking about you. I didn't reference you. I didn't mention you. I was following up a point that the previous poster made (and he didn't mention you, either) - it was a general point. I think the discussion had moved far past whatever you did or didn't do that night in Cameron.

I think we all have realized that (except maybe TBone).
