Time to come up with a name for Singler, Scheyer, Smith. I am confident that the great minds on this board can come up with the perfect moniker. Let's do the legwork before some announcer Christens them with a lame effort they get stuck with. I have been promised that some of your efforts will show up in Cameron next home game.
A few suggestions to get the ball rolling

Ah, I was just about to suggest this! I saw it on IndyWeek's "Triangle Offense" blog last week, I believe.

It doesn't describe the players in any way, but it is concise.

I posted this in the last thread regarding this topic and I must say that I am still a little partial to it: roshambo. Although, I must admit, it doesn't really strike fear in anyone, but it does describe the trio pretty well: rock, paper, scissors. Having said that, I do like "The Firm".

Nolan's the slasher, so I guess that makes him scissors. Who's the rock and who's the paper?

I guess it wasn't as obvious to everyone else as it was in my head.

Scissors - Nolan (as noted above)

Rock - Jon (if for no other reason than because the guy is solid)

Paper - Kyle (he covers everything: can guard big or small, can play inside or out, can break you down off the dribble or shoot the jumper)

I never said it was genius, just that I liked it.

In a five-man game, "3" is a meaningless nothing. Less than that actually. This team is as good as the guys on the second team. Bad, bad idea to focus on the three if what you're after is a championship.

No nickname please.

You may feel that nicknames are silly but a billion dollars are spent every year with advertising and public relations firms (thank God or someone's Duke tuition would not be paid) to come up with names that stick and create an image. We can brand the Duke scoring machine as it is becoming a force, or we can let someone else do it poorly, or we can let it go and feel cheated when someone comes up with something for the Texas, Kentucky or, God forbid UNC, Backcourt.

I do agree that it has to be something that works and that catches on naturally with the students, but there's nothing wrong with having fun with the idea. And you wont think its silly if something sticks, we get in the final four, win a championship, and ........oh well, a guy can dream, right?

We have a high standard to meet here. This is, after all, the website that gave the world The Alaskan Assassin.

Here's why I don't like The Firm: I've heard a group of players referred to as "the firm of X, Y and Z" countless times in countless sports. And "Rock, Paper, Scissors" feels similarly generic. We have to work with what we have here.
-All their last names begin with "S". I think that has to play a vital role in any nickname.
-They all play on the perimeter for Duke. Just stating the obvious.
-There are three of them. More obvious stuff

I'm still trying to think of something better, but I know that alliteration is good, originality is better and not settling for the first few choices in order to come up with something perfect is the best solution. So let's get back to the basics and come up with something great.

(And I'll try to contribute an actual idea when one strikes me.)

I just gave it more thought. I still like the Firm. It is also flexible. It can be expanded to cover 4, 5, or even six partners. The plural Firm is better is better than the singular Landlord, which was a pretty good nickname.

The problem with using alliteration with the three S's is that inevitably the nickname will be too long. It has to be two words at most.

At best we could use initials for a longer nickname.

My suggestion/example: "Pick Your Poison" -- referred to simply as "The PYP"

- It is easy for cheers, easy for the boards, and is an appropriate twist on a common basketball phrase.

Phrases:
"The PYP really carried us tonight"
"PYP with another solid performance"

Cheers:
The always classic "You down with PYP? Yah you know me"
"PYP.... Can't Stop those Three"
etc...

Note: Also works for "The Big Three-- TBT"... "The S Boys--- TSB," etc..

Bottomline- I think we need to go with initials. I am casting my vote for PYP

Please stick with medical and business careers . . . or whatever, just don't go into advertising and marketing please! If you think the economy is bad now, with these markeing minds, it could actually be worse ;-) How about S3 ? Ok, my idea may suck too (and I'm in marketing, no wonder the economy sucks!) . . . it has to be verbal and it must play on the "S" somehow.

So I guess, thus far "S Squad" tops the list . . . but we can do better, can't we?

Earth, Wind and Scheyer?

God these are getting bad.

It's hard to come up with an original name when it's for a group of players. McBob worked because it played off his name, Alaskin Assassin worked because it played off his hometown... what do these three guys have in common? They're guards, they shoot threes, their names start with S. Hmmmmmmm... not much to work with.

I still kind of like The Firm because it plays off the "alarmingly unathletic", white-boy stereotype... but maybe there's something better.

Rochambeau is a sleeper, but I don't know if enough people know that word/would make the connection.

Devil's Triumvirate is pretty genius, but probably fits a Sports Illustrated article better than a catchy nickname.

Please God, put this to rest. Most nicknames, unless they arise organically, are incredibly lame. Plus, it just ties in to the whole "Michael Buffer Intro" mindset.

Having said that, I'd love to see a Blue Planet/Duke Improv video of the three of them in a "What Is Love/Night At The Roxbury" parody. Or maybe not ;)

IMO, I don't think K would be overly thrilled with any nickname that elevated the three of them over the rest of the team.

scheyer is faceman

That is the last name I would use. Didn’t you ever notice how many shots the A-Team would take and not hit anything!:)

Not necessarily. Fredo was a traitor. He was dead to Michael. Tom Hagan can take his place.

Thank you for all the good sentiment towards our firm (Law Offices of James Scott Farrin (http://www.farrin.com)). We appreciate the comparison to the gentlemen on the court. I heard them referred to as 'Triple S' by another fan. Just so everyone is clear, I am not Jim Farrin, nor do my posts reflect his opinions or the firm's (disclaimers from a law office, of course). I just wanted to thank you and give my two cents for naming the 3 Dukies- Triple S could stand for: Seriously Sure-handed Shooters.

No need to limit ourselves to just one term to describe our noble Blue Devils.

For example:

"The Firm administered an s-kicking and ruled the court against Clemson."

"Duke's three-headed monster led the team in disssmembering the Tigers."

"Earth, Wind and Scheyer will storm the Cyclones in Scheyertown."

"Strike Force Three is mobilizing to attack the Yellow Jackets this weekend."

Super Trinity? Too long...

Instead of Strike 3, 3rd Strike? Too distant...

The difficult thing about all this is that, as other posters have pointed out, unless the nickname naturally arises everything else feels manufactured.

S3 (that's supposed to be an S with a superscript 3 for cubed, but it didn't come out right.)

That's how I met my wife in August 1974. She was sitting in the lobby of Hanes House wearing a S3 t-shirt. I went up to her and asked "What's S3?"
S3= Triple S = SSS. Smithfield Selma Senior High School. And the rest, as they say, is history!

BTW, I'm looking forward to SSS's Josh Snead playing football for us next year. He's a heckuva running back!

All it takes is one well publicized sign followed up by an announcer latching on to establish the name. I think it will end up being Earth, Wind, and Scheyer.

Then the band can play this in Cameron every game:

Whether it's taken or not, I still like the G-Man's The Firm. It was off-the-cuff and stout.

Besides, not many care what the New England Patriots' minor moniker was in the late '90s, early '00s. That was a decade ago. Also, none of these nicknames are going to stick regardless. Nicknames, as others have pointed out, must be incredibly unique, natural and witty to stick. Not one potential nickname mentioned above comes close. The Firm is the best, though.

Earth, Wind and Scheyer? I'm sorry but I for one am never repeating that out loud during a Duke game.

Yeah, you may be right, Jumbo. In fact, I know you are. That still doesn't take away from the fact that it sounded great and slipped perfectly off the G-Man's tongue when said, though.

What I don't understand is how you knock The Firm for being too cliche but yet laud -- or at least appreciate -- S-cubed. That's kinda funny. :D

After rereading some of the posts above, I do kind of like PS3. Reminds me of Lethal Weapon 3. It's clever (taking the name from a popular movie -- or in this case video game system -- yet keeping it relevant) and it flows naturally.

PS3 is the winner in my book. Kudos to the poster who came up with this.

Maybe they should just have signs with several of the nicknames. If we can't agree on one -- throw 'em all out there! Still, Earth, Wind and Scheyer/S-Kickers are the clear leaders in the clubhouse. PS3 isn't bad, except for the fact that the "P" feels odd.

I hope the Crazies listen, but I'm still concerned that four years of Crazies haven't realized that "Jon Scheyer" basically rhymes with "On Fire," which lends itself to a great call-and-response chant with the grad students. Could someone please make this happen before the kid graduates?

PS3 just seems so weak to me. It sort of conjures up an image of adolescent couch potato video game addicts who rarely emerge from their parents' basement to engage in actual physical activity.

I sort of like the goofball feel to "The Schmingler Trio" (first name Kyjolan?) but recognize that not everyone has that same sense of humor.

We may just have to wait until some player or coach or media comment or some event naturally suggests a nickname. It may be that these kinds of things happen best spontaneously.

Okay, the Firm -- they lay down the law, and in use it will become the Firm. By the way, anything that stresses just the three is, in my mind, inappropriate and constraining. The Firm is not specific in number. It allows for expansion. By the end of the season we may have two, three or four more guys making major contributions. So the Firm just gets bigger. Allow it, and hope for it. After all it is a team sport.

These are the kind of threads that are on IC all the time. They always look lame to me because the whole concept of "coming up with a nickname" is so contrived. Seriously, Carolina fans have this overwhelming need to attach a dorky nickname to every one of their players. Instead of being like them, why don't we just let nicknames happen organically, which is how most good things happen. Although I can appreciate the OP's comments about marketing etc., I don't think anyone on this board is going to make any money off of the nickname and if any of the players is going to make money off a nickname, it's going to be because their ability merits it and at that point they will have a bunch of marketing people behind them to work this stuff out anyway. I prefer to just enjoy our players for who they are.

Whatever I'm still going to call them the Devil's Trident.

This is my favorite team for the last 3 years easy. Just love the depth we have with the bigs and the promise of Mason laced with our experienced guards and our stopper Lance.

Devil's Trident or just Trident is perfect. I can't see how any other nickname can have more tye-ins. Trident is three, trident is a three pronged weapon, trident is a three pronged weapon of the Blue Devils.

Funny thing is they talked about the "Law Firm" one a few times during the season. And wasn't there a photo of one of them (Nolan?) actually wearing a t-shirt that said "The Law Firm of Scheyer, Singler and Smith," or did I totally make that up? Could've sworn I saw it on BluePlanet or something.
