View Full Version : MBB: Duke vs Clemson Pre-Game and In-Game Thread

ACC conference play starts in less than 24 hours as the Clemson Tigers visit Cameron Indoor Stadium. Trevor Booker is a load inside and he will challenge our young frontcourt players with his athleticism and physical play. There is lots to discuss so let's get started!

I see our bigs playing tough against a good Clemson front court. That means we make them earn points from the free throw line and that could be a problem for them. The press is the thing that worries me, but I look for Coach k to have the team ready to not only break it(press) but score some easy baskets in the process. Go Duke!

One thing we've definitely learned so far is this team is much different than last year's team and I believe we will actually be able to exploit Clemson's press and score easy baskets like you state above. With our big men's ability to run the floor and pass the ball this team should be able to pass over the Clemson press and quickly advance the ball into the frontcourt.

I had successfully managed to blot last year's Clemson game from my memory, but I am now having flashbacks.

That being said, this is a GREAT game to start off the ACC season. Clemson has the tools to contend for the ACC regular season title this year, and this should be a great test of our team.

With Scheyer running the point, and with the ball-handling skills of the rest of our team, I think we should handle the press well. Key to this will be the passing skills of our big men, and Zoubs, Singler, Kelly, and the Plumlees all have respectable-to-very good court vision and passing ability. With appropriate discipline and spacing, we should handle the press well. We're also deep enough to be able to move up and down the court for 40 minutes and not be exhausted at the end of the game.

Defensively, Booker's going to be looking up at a lot of tall guys. He's a load to handle, but we can at least rotate bodies on him more effectively than we did last year. We may also see a good amount of zone...Clemson has a proven inside game, but they have yet to prove that they can shoot you out of a zone.

Very excited for the start of ACC play.

I think that Duke will win because we have so many scoring threats that Clemson must defend. We can score from practically anywhere on the court, which would stretch the Tiger defense. I, as everyone else, am worried about the press because it was so effective last year. But I think we have the size and the ballhandling skills to break it this year.

We got alot of bigs this year and our guards are playing awesome right now. I beleive it will be a totally different outcome this year. Go Duke.

I am hoping that Mason and Ryan get to show off their ball-handling and passing skills against the press. The key to breaking a press is crisp ball movement, knowing where your teammates are, where they are going to be, and what the press is trying to get you to do. Another nice thing is having guys that can see over the press, like a 6'5" PG, 6'8" small forward. Having 5 guys on the floor who can all handle and pass makes a tough team to press, with our without a transcendent point guard.

If Duke goes to a zone - that would definitely worry me from what I've seen so far. We still have not had the Rivers/Ogelsby type player to step up with confidence to extend the defense. Book will be a force inside, but will need a very good game from little Book and Grant to keep that rolling. If Stitt keeps his head and does more driving (under control) to dish or shoot, that should also help keep the game close.
OP's best strategy comes when truly utilizing 9/10 players effectively, in order to maintain the defensive pressure. So that is the big question mark with the Tigers to this point -- is getting solid level play from 9 players for the duration with someone able to get hot outside. If we get that, we can make this a good game -- if not ... the Crazies start the party early.

Potter (.453), Young (.397), and Johnson (.389) all seem to be shooting pretty well from three range. I'm curious why you don't have confidence in them?

Also, for those who are worried about a repeat of last year's debacle, I think there is a huge difference between playing that game at home vs. on the road.

I don't have a problem with their capabilities at all .. just have not seen them yet be consistent there and pull those out at the critical times .. such as we will need tonight. Stitt and Potter have put up alot, but Johnson really hasn't put that many attempts. Young also has the talent here. Just as of yet, I don't think we've proved to be able to do that against some type of decent defense. Not to say that we can't, nor that we don't have the ability.
I'm hoping tonight -- maybe they can prove that they can. :)

MChambers
01-03-2010, 04:34 PM
I agree with whoever said that Mason and Ryan could be big helps breaking the press tonight. Remember McRoberts against Texas a few years back?

It's funny, but our usual starting bigs, Lance and MP1, aren't our best passing big men. It will be interesting to see how Duke breaks the press with them in the game.

To the extent that Dawkins is subbing for one of the 3 Ss, I expect Coach K to try to have Mason in the game to add a little ball handling.

I'd really like to see Miles and Mason on the court together in this game, Mason for breaking the press and Miles for finishing, but I suppose that, as always, their defense will determine if they are in the game together.

I realize some folks won't see this game because of flaky FoxSportsSouth coverage, but even those of us lucky enough to get it, won't...... get the opening minutes, unless tip is closer to 8 than 7:45. The Wake-X game isn't likely to end by 7:45. and Lord knows how crazy we Crazies will get if W-X goes OT.

I hope this was sarcastic.

Andre figures to be a key role player to our team this year and a big part of our team in the future.

Ryan may not get many minutes in the toughest games this year, but again has a bright future on our team.

I don't see how either or these guys would have any interest in transferring or are in any way in similar situations to guys that have transfered out of the program after identifying that their chances for playing time in the future were limited.
