I was checking conference records this morning and came up with something that I think is odd.
There are 33 Division 1 conferences. How many do you think have a winning record against BCS opponents?
The answer is two -- the Big 12 (25-6) and the ACC (22-18).
Now, it's not that surprising that all of the 27 non-BCS conferences would have a losing record against BCS opponents. Actually only 26 do -- the Mountain West is breaking even at 12-12.
What surprises me is that four of the six BCS conferences have losing records against their BCS foes -- the Big East at 16-17; the SEC at 21-23; the Big 10 at 17-19 ... and the truely dreadful Pac 10 at 9-24.
It's also interesting to chart the number of non-conference games the various leagues have chosen to play against BCS competition. Breaking it down by average per team, you get:
SEC 3.7
ACC 3.33
Pac 10 3.30
Big 10 3.27
Big 12 2.6
Big East 2.1
Credit to the SEC for playing the most tough opponents -- interesting how the Big East has dodged its BCS rivals.
Note: Duke has already played four BCS opponents -- with two more (Iowa State and Georgetown) still to come.
