The local Duke hater, Bomani Jones, is leaving the daily sports talk radio show in Durham - 620 The Bull. Hopefully, they can find someone with a more even handed approach. The constant abuse he delivered to Paulus and other white bball players at Duke got real old, real quick.

A welcome loss and the first casualty of triangle radio consolidation. Anyone know how this will shake out?

This is awesome. The guy was a serious a-hole and the biggest racist you will ever experience.

Any idea where he is going? His shtick of loving the heels and hating Duke cannot be taken outside the triangle. Never quite sure he had much knowledge of sports in general.

850 the buzz was bought out by curtis. it likely will end up a music station. adam gold and joe ovies will be on 620 from 6-9 (down an hour). dave glenn will be syndicated and can be heard on 99.9 fm. I'm not certain the hour. jim rome will move to 620. everybody else at 850 is gone including jones and morgan patrick, a truly good guy, as well as tony rigsbee. I think pacman remains on 620. don't know what happens with imus.

The shocker in that list is Rigsbee. Never a sports specialist (unless the sport is baseball of which his knowledge is considerable) he has been a fixture of Triangle AM radio for at least 30 years, a utility infielder who has held every job that can exist in a radio station. Would be nice to see the new owners of Moore Productions pick him up for Duke basketball broadcasts and be the new sideline reporter to replace Matthew Laurance.

Couldn't of happened to a nicer guy. Hope his unemployment lasts long enough to give him some humility and a kinder outlook toward his fellow man. We ALL need to look past the color of one's skin when passing judgement.

Not so fast. Change "heels" to "terps" and he could EASILY end up in the DC area...:p;)

You're correct about the knowledge issue however.:D

can't express how happy i am to know he's gone......what a racist tool.....

for all his wannabe "hip-ness" and "down with the brothers" his shtik was, it's good to know that's EXACTLY what turned all the station's listeners off.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say I'm not thrilled about some of the comments in this thread. I'm an out of towner, so I don't listen to him much except while driving in Durham on football game days, but I never heard him say anything that would make me call him a "racist tool". Calling anyone a racist is pretty harsh unless it is absolutely blatant (I'm thinking Jesse Helms). What did drive me crazy about him was that he would brag on teaching at Duke, and use the flat out dumbest language on the radio I've ever heard. His lack of intelligent speech is what turned me off...that and shouting down anyone who would offer an opposing view. So call him a blathering idiot...but tread lightly when calling him a racist. Maybe he is, I just never had experience to back that up.

I am not going to call him a name other than "Duke Hater" but his commentaries on Josh Hamilton and discussion with Hamilton's grandfather were over the top and if the races were reversed, I'm sure Bomani would have been pulled from the show. I think a great deal of his garbage was simply to aggravate white people and particularly those in dark blue. Probably just a game to him.

It wasn't really just that we was a Duke hater. It was that his analysis of anything sports related was pathetic. I'll never forget listening to him as he analyzed the aftermath of the Celtics-Lakers NBA finals series back in '08. "The Lakers lost because they're sorry, they're sorry, they're sorry". That was really it. He spent about half an hour just saying that. Nothing about what Boston did to accomplish the title, just bashed the Lakers with the same term over and over. That pretty much sums up Bomani's knowledge of sports. Talk real fast, sound like you're smooth, doesn't matter if you are clueless about the contents of your subject matter... and negative sells.

Poor Bonami, maybe he can catch on at Belk's for the Christmas season.

I think I got an order of fries with my big mac from him yesterday. Maybe I'm mistaken, sorry. Or maybe like that TV show currently being promoted I'm just witnessing the future.

He said on his show the other day that he will be on from 12-3 on 99.9 and 620 for awhile. I believe that starts on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week. He also said that his show would be broadcast beyond the Triangle in the future, but I am not sure if it will be picked up as far as Charlotte. He's always seemed very even-handed to me in the way he treats all the local teams, and unfortunately this time slot is going to make it harder for me to listen to his show.

I could never buy him as a Duke hater. I had the sense that we was pretty even-handed in how he dished out his critiques. I should have perused the other boards before typing this, but I'm guessing the folks at IC or PackPride are celebrating his departure as well, for reasons similar to ones read here.
I think he's harsh, strident, factually tenuous, and entertaining. I think he provides the most unique viewpoint amongst the folks who populate the 620/850 teams, and I was thankful for him as a change of pace. At his best, he's the funniest of the local sports guys, which is not to say his humor, or his logic, always works.
Just this morning he stated flatly that he thinks David Cutcliffe is a better coach than Butch Davis and that Duke fans should be proud of their football team. He'd seen the video posted on Duke's website regarding the Cokes with Coach film studies and heartily approved of those, thinking he'd like to go himself.
The fact that he doesn't drink the Duke Basketball koolaid shouldn't bother those of us w/blue tongues. I'm a true fan, but still I see more bias above me on this board than I hear on his radio show. I think racial preconceptions may be similarly distributed.

orrnot, I think you're right about football, and last week I heard Bomani say similar things about Cutcliffe vs. Davis. But when it comes to basketball, my impression is that he has been consistently anti-Duke in a way that comes across as biased and contentious. I have never heard him take the same tone towards UNC hoops. I also think he knows his market is probably 80% UNC fans and plays to them.

The beauty of these boards is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I listened to him repeatedly state that he hates the Duke basketball program and on one pregame show (at least a year ago), asked listeners to call in and tell why they also hated the program. I don't think he hated K so much, but the comments about the individual players and school were atrocious. I did not hear similar comments about the individual players at the other schools.

goodbye to mr. jones and good riddance, anyone who's had to listen to that blowhard for more than 5 minutes, knows he deserves to go. In regard to Tony Rigsbee being used as a replacement for Matthew, well i for one don't see it. Tony has been in the business for years but he comes across as dull and when dealing with the public (on local call in shows) he always seemed to be a know it all, with little regard for other opinions. jmo

MOST of the "talent" at 850 are blowhards, with the notable exception of David Glenn, who stays classy despite his UNC leanings. Bomani was the worst of the bunch, but most radio air "personalities" are blowhards who believe their own press. I've been around radio "personalities" for many years and they really do think they're always right. Invite them to a party at your own risk. ;)
