A generally sound overview of Clemson on the front page this morning. As always I enjoy any interwebz nuggets I can find on my beloved Tigers. A couple of additional thoughts:

Trevor Booker has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his foot. Different from a stress fracture, what I've seen reported on Clemson websites is that the condition causes pain - but that if Booker can cope with the pain then it is what it is and not likely to get worse. I've heard no mention that the injury would cause him to miss any time. The question is if (or how much) it might limit his effectiveness.

Devin Booker is an absolute Freak of Nature. Reports are that he's the second best jumper on the team (to Narcisse, who was a state champion high jumper and a freak of athleticism in his own right with the wingspan DBR alluded to.) He also turned in the second best shuttle time in pre-season workouts, behind only Demontez Stitt. He's coming in with the reputation of having a better jump shot (out to about 17') than his brother has today. And he's got the same nasty determination to dominate on the boards that Mrs. Booker, god love her, instilled in Trevor.

DBR asks who might man the front of Purnell's beloved press? Devin Booker, no doubt. I'm envisioning James Mays with a jump shot.

Not to mention that the addition of Book II and Jennings will give Purnell, for the first time in his Clemson tenure, the thing he has most desired from an offensive standpoint - a legitimate high-low game. (My stomach is turning knots as I type recalling all the failed high-low attempts of Ray Sykes in the last two years.)

As DBR also notes, Stitt (while not sexy) shold give the Tigers a solid backcourt presence - and an experienced one. He's developing along the same career path as Vern Hamilton, which is to say he's a competent distributor and able to run the offense but his real value is becoming his ability to take the ball to the rack and finish. He's not a very good outside shooter - and that ultimately limits both his effectiveness and his upside. But Clemson is fortunate to have him. Along side, however, is Andre Young. I wouldn't be surprised for Young to supercede Stitt as the primary PG/ballhandler by the time ACC play rolls around. Young protects the ball much better, is quicker and has a good range from 3. I wouldn't be surprised to see Purnell use Stitt as an off-guard with Young running the offense (although Stitt is even more limited offensively in the 2G role without deep range.)

I have zero expectation for Catalin Baicu this season. He's a project and I'd be happy if he were able to provide serviceable minutes as a Jr/Sr. He just doesn't play fast enough to keep up with the style/tempo that OP wants to employ. It'll be difficult for anyone over 6'8" to be able to do that - and I think the recruiting trend bears that out and will continue to bear that out.

In addition to the high-low, this roster is tailor-made to Purnell's taste from a depth perspective as well. I can see a 10 man rotation of: Book I, Grant, Book II, Jennings, Potter, Smith, Johnson, Hill, Stitt and Young. That's a fast, athletic, versatile, deep group.

Unfortunately with the OOC schedule upgrades and the vagaries of the rotating ACC schedule I think this year's version could be better than either of the last two (NCAA) teams - and end up with a worse conference record and firmly on the bubble come Selection Sunday. But overall a better, more dangerous team.

Thanks for sharing your insight. I am a big fan of the job Oliver Purnell is doing at Clemson and will be rooting for your Tigers except when I obviously will not be rooting for your Tigers. I expect a ferocious battle in the ACC for positions three and four, and a Day One bye in the ACCT, behind Duke and Carolina. Clemson, Maryland, FSU, Wake, and BC will all be fighting it out.

You can listen to Oliver Purnell in this video:

Purnell describes his incoming freshmen as the best recruiting class in the history of Clemson basketball.

Wait. You left out GaTech, which on paper looks darn strong. Indeed, Athlon Sports pegs them at #2 in ACC, ahead of Duke. You don't really mean you got them at 8 or worse in ACC?

Although.... I'll admit that, after what appears to be a solid top-tier-2 of UNC/Duke, and a bottom-tier-3 of Miami/UVA/State, the other 7 I have in a "middle muddle." Anything could happen there, though I'm inclined to put GaT up with Clemson, FSU, and Md, while Wake and VaT fall toward 8-9 spots. I guess that leaves BC at 7.

Back to you, BG: GaT??

My problem with GT is it's not like they haven't had talent in the past. It's that Hewitt hasn't been able to translate talent into wins in the ACC

I do understand that Hewitt's coaching ability is generally panned on this board, by folks who have a better feel for this than I. So I can only say that if Hewitt can't get this bunch of real talent to the top 5 of the conf, then he's nowhere near a top-flight coach.

Back to OP and Clemson: I don't quite see them as #3 or 4, but maybe. Booker's injury, if limiting, is troubling, big time. But they got some talent, and a coach whose bona fides are not in question.

I agree. GT will be strong this year. But my biggest question with them is can they win on the road? GT has traditionally been pretty horrible on the road (2004 game in Cameron, notwithstanding). They'll have talent, but they'll lean on some inexperienced players who will inevitably make their share of turnovers and mistakes, especially in a hostile arena (or indoor stadium). I don't think their talent is overwhelming enough to win enough road matches to seriously challenge for the number two or three spot unless one or both of Duke and UNC endure tougher than expected struggles.

I was remiss in not listing GT as one of the schools battling it out for 3rd or 4th place behind Duke and Carolina. There is a ton of talent in Atlanta this year. However, I have zero confidence in GT actually getting the job done. Paul Hewitt's days in Atlanta are numbered unless he wins big this year the only year Derrick Favors will be in college. I'll stick with Maryland and Clemson finishing ahead of GT. If Gary Williams had all the talent at Maryland that Paul Hewitt has at GT, or putting it another way, if GT had Gary Williams as their coach, the sky would be the limit.

Since I posted the complete list on the Mason Plumlee thread, I will just list who Bookies say are in the battle for the other two byes in ACC:

25. BOSTON COLLEGE (50-1)
26. CLEMSON (50-1) [+ hardest ACC unbalanced schedule]
27. GEORGIA TECH (50-1) [+ second hardest ACC unbalanced schedule]

39 MARYLAND (75-1) [+ third hardest ACC unbalanced schedule]

43 FLORIDA STATE (100-1)
46 NORTH CAROLINA STATE (100-1)
50 VIRGINIA TECH (100-1)

No mention of UVA [easiest ACC unbalanced schedule] at all.

This is just odds to win the NCAAA Tournament and not ACC regular season finish which would involve the infamous ACC unbalanced schedule that hurts Clemson and GA Tech as previous poster rightly pointed out.

Strength Schedule

946 Clemson has most difficult ACC unbalanced schedule

936 GA Tech
926 MD
923 Wake

919 VA Tech
918 BC
910 Duke

894 FSU
887 NC ST

880 Miami
878 UNC

863 UVA

So when you combine the two lots of parity in ACC this year.

On the aggregation of pre-season polls I do, the order is somewhat different, with most of the usual suspects above plus FSU, and BC not so much for third in ACC, but still an NCAA tourney team.

06 1,943 ACC UNC -1
08 1,771 ACC Duke -2

21 1,077 ACC Clemson -3

28 859 ACC GA Tech -4
29 843 ACC Wake Forest -5

36 689 ACC FSU -6
37 685 ACC Maryland -7

42 499 ACC B.C. -8

58 204 ACC Va Tech -9

70 127 ACC Miami-Fl -10

85 75 ACC UVA - 11

115 ACC NC St - 12

Beside Duke and Louisville, the most surprising to me was Alabama at 10-1, Florida at 15-1 NC St at 100-1
