Coach K and the players visited the grad student campout last night. After introducing the team and letting co-captains Thomas and Scheyer speak to the crowd, Coach K had some news to convey:
-Seating: grad student seating in Cameron has been expanded to include portions of the other end zone (behind the opponent's basket in the 2nd half). The band will still be there, but we'll just have grad students filling it in.
-Countdown to Craziness: a midnight madness event to kick off the official start of the practice season, Oct. 16. It will include various events and attractions (in Cameron and in K-ville), including an intra-squad scrimmage. This will not replace the Blue-White game--just supplement it.
-Edge: This was purposefully cryptic, but Coach mentioned that there will be (in addition to the expanded grad student seating) some additional changes in Cameron to improve our "edge." He did not elaborate much, other than to say that the purpose of these changes will be to better "punish the opponent" and help win more basketball games.
He expressed his intention to stay at Duke for the rest of his life, and when asked about it, he also discussed his role with Team USA and emphasized the extremely positive effect it has had on him as a coach. He thinks it has probably had a neutral effect on recruiting so far, pointing out that a lot of the time he devotes to Team USA is during dead periods (when he can't work with the players or meet with recruits anyway).
Throughout the evening, Coach K was unequivocal about two things: (1) the goal of this season is to win a national championship, (2) the team will not be looking back at all (at successes or setbacks from last season).
Let's go Duke!
