View Full Version : Player development in the summer

Since our 2009-10 team will be heavily dependent on how much our unproven players develop over the summer, I was wondering how much coaching our staff is allowed to provide during the summer.

More specifically, how many hours a week is Zoubek allowed to work on his post moves with the coaching staff present to provide comments and instruction on his footwork? I guess this is a question about NCAA rules.

For those who have been former team managers or walk-ons, I have another question: What do our players do during the summer to improve other than play pick-up games? Perhaps Watzone can help answer this one as well.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I just stumbled upon some youtube clips of a dunk contest from a couple weeks ago between Miles, Mason, Kyle and Nolan. It's low quality video and it's not edited or anything, but it's something recent with our guys at least.

Mason and Kyle look about like you'd expect, although Mason did manage to throw down a smooth between the legs dunk and somehow caught an alley-oop bounced off of the [i]back[/] of the backboard.

Nolan looks quite explosive off the ground though (see his double clutch 360 off of 2 feet). Miles also had some very acrobatic finishes that surprised me a little bit, as did his in-game windmill in the Pro-Am video. Now, (insert disclaimer about summer play here), but hopefully it at least means he's feeling a little more confident and finishing a little stronger...

I am pretty sure they can spend something like 2 hours per day with them. I couldn't find it in the rule book, but found this in a recent press release:

....allow participation in eight hours of conditioning, weight training and skill instruction activities per week, with no more than two of the hours devoted to skill instruction. That is in addition to the access period coaches currently enjoy from the conclusion of the Men’s Final Four to the end of the spring term.

As the Scheyer piece on the front page shows, some of our players get invited to various skills camps based on their position. Paulus went to a PG one a few years back, and both Jon and Gerald have gone to one, though I believe Jon went to a wing guard one previously.

They also play a lot of pickup, especially with former players who undoubtedly provide some informal coaching. Someone posted a few photos of Laettner working with Zoubs on DukeBluePlanet. I think there's also some semi-organized pickup leagues with the Carolina/NC State players.

You can bet they also spend a lot of time in the weight room, especially the younger guys who need to beef up.

^^I'm really excited to see what Scheyer brings back from this camp. He seemed pretty confident from that article.

Here are videos of a Dunk Contest that I filmed while I was at the Duke Basketball Camp. There is Casey Peters, Miles Plumlee, and Mason Plumlee.

Casey dunks like Wojo. Looks like we have found our reserve point guard. Hopefully, he isn't a wing or an inside player!

The dunk by MP2 from behind the backboard was probably the most creative and cool dunk I have seen in years. He should have pulled that out for the McD's dunk contest. I'm betting that would have won it for him.

The make jump shot turned into a bounced ali-oop was also pretty sweet.

I thought the second one you mention, the made jump shot (which looked like a 3), was even more creative. Rudy Fernandez did a similar dunk in the NBA dunk contest with Pau Gasol throwing the pass, and I think Dwight Howard did a similar one a year or two back, but I've never seen anything like the one Mason did. Hopefully he can shoot and dunk it like that all next year.

Cool video. Who was the guy in the purple shorts? I only caught a glimpse of his face and it kind of looked like Andre Dawkins, but not quite...(and I imagine he's been off at camps/AAU circuit as of late)

I like the talk about MASON & NOLAN. If they both COME THRU for us (MP2 raising the bar in the frontcourt -- whether it's in games, or practice ... and Smith playing a smart yet dynamic point), the team could surprise a lot of people.

I was down after GH declared, then (only a little further) when EW left us ... but now I have laid aside what AIN'T, and am concentrating on what IS. Don't forget, kids, we return a GREAT NUCLEUS -- Kyle & Jon are two of the smartest players in the country. If we can identify two more consistent offensive threats, this could be a fun year ... I get the feeling COACH K will figure it out .... GO DUKE !

Seeing a beefed up Miles showing some serious hops, Mason showing some great hops and body control and Nolan flying has not made me any less excited for next year.

Actually, they chose one of the older campers to be in the dunk contest. His name was Keith, I think. To me he kindof looked like DeMarcus Nelson.

One time between the two videos, Mason got two of the high school campers and jumped over them without touching them and dunked it. I got tired of holding the camera a lot, so I had to stop.

Hey Greg, looks like our videos got on a dunk website. They are somewhere near the middle.
