Not a lot of detail but the Duke women apparently defeated Miami today to advance to the semi-finals. I believe it was 4-1. Big win over a good team.

Great weekend for Duke spring sports.

Congrats to the team! They have been on a complete roll as of late - winning their last 16 matches. Their last loss was actually vs. Miami back on March 25 (they had since beaten Miami in the ACC championship match). They take on the winner of #2 UGa and South Carolina. GREAT season! Hopefully, they can keep it up. They were a top 10 pre-season team (#9), but I don't think many expected them to dominate so much as of late and have the #3 ranking in the country.

The team is led by freshman sensation Mallory Cecil at #1 singles. As the linked article indicates, she has been on a tear lately; she led the team today with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Miami player Julia Cohen who had been ranked #4 overall in NCAA rankings.

It's been an excellent year for Duke spring sports. It would be great to see at least one of the teams capture a national championship.

The Duke women's tennis team seeded #3 will take on #2 seeded Georgia today 5/18 at 5:00 PM in the national semifinals.

This link should work, to provide live scores and streaming match coverage.

Should be a tight match, but Duke is playing very well and definitely capable of winning the championship.

Looks like a possible Duke rout - wonder why this team didn't get any more attention. The N&O had like 2 lines buried in the paper this morning.

Barring a massive collapse, it looks like Duke is going to win. They are up 1-0 and only need to win 3 of the 6 singles matches. Right now they're leading in 5 of those matches, including being a set up in most of them.

Hi,

I seem to think we shouldn't say anything, until we have the Championship in hand. I've seen Duke lose too many championships that seem to be won. I don't understand it, but winning NCAA championships is not our forte. :(

GO DUKE!

Well maybe we're getting better at it.

Wow! Congratulations! What an accomplishment. This was a team that, while considered very strong, not many people expected for them to be this good at the beginning of the season. They just completed dominated Cal in the championship game. Duke has always had a strong tennis program, and had an individual champion in Vanessa Webb (1998), but it finally broke through the barrier and took home the national championship. Mallory Cecil has just been a sensation her freshman year - I expect her to have a really good showing at the individual champsionships (when is that? a couple weeks). Also of note is that Duke also won the Club Tennis national championship (coed). It's obviously not nearly as intense as a varsity sport, but still took a considerable effort and shows the level of the tennis program at Duke. Duke defeated only huge state schools in route to the championship - Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M (last year's champion), and Wisconsin. Billie Jean King presented the trophy. I'm probably just mentioning this because I am a former VP of the mens' club tennis team. ;) http://www.tennisoncampus.com/News/UniversityCapturesTitleAt2009USTANationalCampusCha mpionship.htm

But, wow, congrats women's tennis!!!!!! They are just incredibly good. You should check them out. Now we have ten national championships. I knew we'd get to double digits sooner rather than later. Hopefully, men's LAX can add to the total.

Actually, Singles competition starts tomorrow Weds. 5/20, at the same location.

Go, Mallory! Hmmm...what if she does well in the singles competition after having played a key role in the team championship...and then decides to turn pro? Will we hear endless discussion about one-and-done? :)

A wonderful (and, for me, unexpected) NCAA Championship for our Blue Devils. Hearty CONGRATULATIONS to the team and coaches.

As a side-note, I watched the championship on ESPN-U and was quite impressed by how poised and deliberate a team with many younger student athletes executed in their ultimate competitive environment.

Congrats to the women's tennis team.

I must admit that I don't follow the sport much, but judging from the articles I have read, the team displayed some amazing resilience this whole season. Losing their former #1 singles player early and then losing another solid player weeks before the tourney would have crushed a lot of other teams, but this team persevered.

Come on Lax team, I wish Danowski and Greer could have left Duke champions, but better late than never!

CONGRATS to the Duke Womens' Team --We are proud of you...By my count ,this is Duke's 10th Championship----Womens' Golf ---5; Mens' Basketball ---3; and Soccer ---1.

Of course ,there should be a FOOTNOTE---If Tony Lang had been 2 inches taller(v. ARK) and Alison Bales able to jump two more inches (v. MD), there would be 2 more

Or if we played smart basketball and fouled MD while up 3 with less than 3 seconds in the game rather than giving a fairly open three to a ridiculously good shooter... But we could play the if's game endlessly. 86, 02, 99, 04....

Might as well focus on the positives! :D And LAX is going to add to the total this weekend in Foxborough!

Cecil advances to the finals! Just destroyed #2 seed Julia Cohen from Miami 6-1, 6-0!

http://www.aggieathletics.com/ncaa2009/tennis/results.html#singles

Very impressive freshman season. Hopefully, will have another individual champion and perhaps ACC Athlete of the year. I could see her getting it - I'd imagine Duke would nominate Cecil if she wins it for sure. Although there could be another female who has led her team more than Cecil, but she'd certainly be high on the list.

Championship is tomorrow at 3 pm.

Mallory Cecil will face Laura Vallverdu of Miami for the championship. Vallverdu is actually Miami's #2 player; she defeated Duke's #2 Ellah Nze when the teams met in the tournament. Vallverdu just finished a 3-set win over Gullickson of Georgia (the only person to beat Cecil in the last 21 matches).

Go, Mallory!

For those of you who don't know the story, Cecil actually should be a high-school senior. She graduated a semester early and enrolled at Duke in January. Her youth likely ensures that she'll be at Duke at least another season.

Cecil came second in voting for the ACC female athlete of the year award for all sports (aka Mary Garber Award). I thought she had a chance to win it, but UNC soccer player Casey Nogueira, who was awarded NPOY and led UNC to a national championship (much like Cecil did in tennis), beat her out 18 to 13. NC St golfer Matt Hill, the NCAA men's golf champion, won male athlete of the year. Still quite impressive, obviously. I wonder the last time a freshman finished in the top two in voting.
