Anyone else buy and read K's new book, "The Gold Standard"?

I followed K's involvement with Team USA very closely, watching every game, reading every article, etc. For those who did the same, the book will be a little bit of a re-run rather than anything new. I had heard most of these anecdotes many times over...Michael Redd wearing a suit for his interview with Colangelo, Kobe wanting to guard the other team's best player, etc. In buying the book, I was hoping for more stuff that I had never heard...how the coaches worked together, anecdotes from practice, the locker room, their travels together, etc. But, there was precious little that had not already been covered elsewhere. Part of it is that it's written as a "how to succeed in life and business" manual which doesn't really get me going, but will probably result in more sales. Maybe it's also the niche that Jaime K Spatola is carving out as a writer (along with K's platform as a model leader) so I understand why they keep going back to that forumla. Still, it's nice to have all the stories in the same place and there is some new stuff in there.

I did watch K on Charlie Rose last night and there was some good stuff in there. I believe that Rose, a Duke alum, and K are very good friends, so Rose was really giving K a hard time about a number of subjects including:

-Will he coach Team USA again?
K would not say yes or no...and Rose was really grilling him with, "Why not?"

-Is he failing to get the same caliber of player he's gotten in the past?
K says no, that a lot of that talk is overblown. He praised UNC for doing a great job of having the most talent and playing the best with the best talent, something he says is a rare achievement.

Finally, he said that coaching Duke is the thing that makes him the happiest and gives him the most fulfillment, so why would he ever do anything that took away from that (this came out of a Rose comment about him coaching in the NBA).

I think he's having a hard time with the concept that his tenure with Team USA is over. It's obvious that he found that experience extremely stimulating and rewarding and I don't think he's ready to let it go. What that means, I'm not sure.

Basketball coach, Author, "The Gold Standard"

They spelled his name wrong. You'd think they'd double check that!

Didn't see it anywhere on here, but Coach K will be on Colbert tonight (11:30, comedy central). I assume he's promoting his book, should be interesting...

He was funny in the interview. I feel like being interviewed by Stephen Colbert has the potential to be really awkward... he tries to throw people off sometimes.

The Charlie Rose folks have posted the entire interview Charlie did with Coach K back on Monday. Here's a link for you:

I'm all about coach but that was just awkward. I think he's just so serious that he doesn't mesh well with that style of humor.

He did a book reading, a Q&A session, and a signing with Jamie at the NBA Store in NYC yesterday and it was a really great event. There were a bunch of "NBA Cares" kids there and they asked him a ton of questions about Kobe and Dwyane and all the guys. And of course Coach was very attentive to everyone and super nice.

I record the Colbert Report every night and was surprised to hear the guest last night was Coach K! I just watched the interview and I'll summarize it below, but if you want to watch it yourself, you can tune in tonight at about 8:45 (when the interview portion of the show is) as they will replay last night's show on Comedy Central.

For those that don't know, Colbert is a comedian and does a lot of sarcasm. Coach K was on to promote his book The Gold Standard about Team USA. Colbert started off accusing K of "hoarding all the consonants" during rough economic times! :) Coach K mostly played along with Colbert's jokes and didn't say a whole not (nothing about Duke actually), but a few things of note:

- Coach K believes a player should be able to go pro straight out of high school
- K thinks MJ is the best ever
- K's daughter is part of "Colbert Nation"!

Not much substance, but thought I'd post about it since I didn't see another thread on it.

I personally enjoyed the "team = socialism" part. Made me laugh. Very very fun interview.

Remember that the biased sports media insists that we take all of Coach K's comments on the Colbert Report and serious, earnest face value responses and we can criticize him to the fullest extent. See, his ego is so big, he can't make joke, not about Obama's NCAA picks or on a Comedy Central show:rolleyes:

I thought Coach K did a great job of accounting for himself. It's easy for people like Colbert to make people look like idiots when they want to. Coach did a good job of just playing along or simply keeping his mouth shut. I enjoyed the segment.

I was listening to 106.7 WJFK this afternoon, the Big O and Dukes show, and they had K on by phone from LA. It was really fun hearing him on local radio. He talked about the olympics. They of course, mentioned that they were terp supporters here, so he was the villain, but he just took it in style. I thought it was a really good interview. You can get podcasts of their show on iTunes and possibly at the website, www.wjfk.com .

Enjoy!

Yeah, supposedly live in the studio for Rome's radio show, and then also on the TV show.

I occasionally listen to Rome, and he has some very good interviews; some of the time he's just obnoxious, and he's been very negative towards K and Duke in recent years (probably having to do with K's refusal to appear on his show till now). I have no doubt Coach K will be very professional, but may get in a jibe or two.

Wow! I have been listening to Rome for about 10 years and I don't think Coach K has ever been on and I always felt that Rome has never been a big Coach K or Duke fan. I know that former Duke players are some of his favorite guests, Battier, Grant, Christian and JJ but never heard him talk about Coach in the same way.

That's the main reason I tuned in, to see how that would play out. "Rummy" (as one of K's daughters calls him) said he got it out of his system, and even joked that he was glad Coack K didn't lunge over the table at him. K joked back that he was 62, a bit old for climbing over tables, but that he might kick him underneath the table.

Looking forward to watching how the TV session turns out this afternoon.

Turned out quite well, IMO. It was a fast-paced, straight-forward interview with a well-prepared Rome asking questions mostly about the Olympics experience and some about Duke. Coach K was in good form and gracious to the host.

Rome seemed generally impressed, and I'd guess viewers that might include potential recruits such as young Mr. Wall were impressed also. Probably a good thing for K and Rome to mend fences; as noted, I doubt you'll hear much garbage from Rome about K in the future.

moonpie23
04-29-2009, 10:54 PM
i don't know if they had any real fences to mend. rome called him "kry-zu-ski" a lot, but they never had any bad blood..

it was a great interview and it was obvious rome had tremendous respect for K during and after ......Coach even admitted that he calls himSELF "kry-zu-ski" to certain close friends..

rome's bit is sarcasm on a stellar plane......there was none of that during or after the interview....pure respect and appreciation by rome...
