Why would we go after this guy when we already have Josh Hairston?

On closer inspection, Cothron is ranked 17 overall in 2010 by Rivals. Impressive. Scout has him way down on their list (16th best power forward). I'm sure K sees something there, but it just seems strange that we'd go after another PF in the 2010 class.

Luke Cothron PF (6-8, 190) (BWSL, Boo Williams)
2010, Red Springs, N.C. /Flora Macdonald Academy

Cothron is a long and lean athlete that affects the game in a variety of ways. He is active and aggressive on both ends of the floor with ability to rebound and block shots. He lacks strength but makes up for it with effort and intensity. He rebounds at rim level and runs the floor extremely well. He finishes drop off passes above the rim with a clear path. He has great shot block timing on and away from the ball. What he does not block he changes. He scores in the lane with athletic moves where he elevates over defenders with good touch and body control. He also is a tip dunk threat on the offensive glass as well. He has good hands and active feet. He lacks perimeter skills but can put the ball on the floor one or two dribble and get into the lane with minimal ball pressure. If Cothron improves his ball skills and expands his shooting range from outside the lane he will elevate his game to the next level. This kid's a big-time athlete with ton of upside and a pleasant surprise on a loaded Boo Williams team.

Thanks for the info. He definitely looks like a good prospect; he's clearly a pretty good rebounder. I found a couple vidoes:

It's hard to tell much of anything from these, but it's better than nothing.

I hope the fact that we're recruiting him doesn't say anything about Josh Hairston, who is ranked 14th on Rivals vs. 17th for Cothron. Someone posted some rumor about a possible de-commitment that I never heard anything about. I'm assuming there's no truth behind it, but when I hear Duke is going after another PF in the same class, it's worrisome. Maybe Coach K is taking the Carolina approach, and recruiting as many big men as possible (Wears and Henson this year, Davis and Zeller last year, etc).

We'lll be losing Lance and Zoubek the year before the 2010 guys come in. I think Cothron and Hairston could play together anyway.

Someone with a better grasp of Duke's history can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like we're recruiting much more extensively within the state of North Carolina than in recent memory. The roster currently or will soon feature MP1, MP2, Kelly, and Curry, all NC guys. It could potentially also see Wall, MP3, and now Cothron over the next few years. That's seven guys. I don't think the roster ever had any NC players during my four years in Durham. If you want to expand your view to the region, we've also got Nolan, Hairston, and Dawkins, who are from VA, plus Thornton from DC.

I realize some of these guys are special cases (Kelly, Curry, and MP1 all seemed to fall suddenly into Duke's lap) but it still makes you wonder. Are K and the staff making a concerted effort to focus heavily on our geographic region? Or is this just a weird case of a geographic anomaly of talent meeting a confluence of interest and needs?

Yes, I was the one who posted ONE of the web links. It was removed and I was warned for it. The only thing I will say is that there are other sites out there reporting "a possibility" as well. I am not taking a chance and posting any of the other links, I am here to tell you that that is a legitimate question that seems to be coming into play.

Either way this kid could be a great pickup because he seems to have a HUGE upside.

Sounds like a 4 year player who can come in to the program, gain muscle, and become a force at the PF position.

Really, are you back to rumor-mongering again?

I looked for links and found none. Far as I know, you posted none, but speculated on unfounded rumors.

Hard lesson to learn?

but this article seems encouraging for 2010. Dawkins says he and the other 2010 commits are recruiting other players for 2010. from scout:

http://duke.scout.com/a.z?s=167&p=2&c=856346&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fduke.scout.com%2f2%2f856 346.html

one of the commitments from the class of 2010 who is working hard on his game and hard on the recruiting trail to help the coaching staff build a truly elite team when he arrives on campus. What has improved with his game over the last year? Who is he guaranteeing will commit to the Blue Devils?

dawkins is quoted somewhere talking about this on a free site, but unfortunately i can't find it..

found it:

http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt_andredawkins_0411apr11,0,7733443.story

After Dawkins picked Duke, he said he started talking to Thornton and Hairston about the Blue Devils.

His talking paid off. On Sept. 13, both said they, too, would play for Duke.

"Now we're trying to get other guys to commit," Dawkins said. "We're working on a couple of others."

this makes me doubt any suggestion that hariston is going to decommit..

Until someone has a legitimate, public link that states that we're recruiting Cothron or that he is interested in us, this is just rumor-mongering, which is not allowed here. Lots of other places on the internet for that...

This thread is CLOSED. If you find a legit, public link, PM me or another mod, and we'll reopen this thread.
