I'll be in Kansas City this weekend. Anyone have barbecue recommendations? I'm planning to go to the Kansas/Nebraska game in Allen Fieldhouse, so anything in Lawrence is helpful too.

I love that this post put you at Bobby Hurley. You should not post for about a day just to enjoy it.

In Lawrence, I like Tellers. It is in the old bank building on Mass. Also on Mass is the Free State Brewery. Neither is a BBQ place. The Sandbar is a bar that has a fun weather report during the evening - complete with dancing on the bar. (Of course, it has been a while since I was there the one time.) (Mass is Massachusetts - the main street through the business district. Streets in Lawrence are in order of admittance to the Union.)

There are lots of BBQ places to try in KC. Gates is a classic - everyone should experience at least one "Hi, May I help you" greeting in their life. The sauce is more vinegary than others. Another good one is Fiorella's Jack Stack. Both have multiple locations. Arthur Bryants in downtown is famous but I must admit I have never tried it as I don't get downtown much. I do know that you get greasy fingerprints on your bread there.

If you want a BBQ in Lawrence, let me know and I can check with a friend that lives in Lawrence.

First, go to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum http://www.nlbm.com/

Then, if you still have time left, eat dinner. The only time I was in KC I ate here because it was highly reccomended http://www.jackstackbbq.com/jack-stack-barbecue-freight-house/i/12/

It was very good. But if my time was limited and I had to choose between food and the Negro Leagues Museum, despite how much I love BBQ, I'd grab a quick sandwich somewhere and head over to the museum. It is one of the things you must do on a trip to KC.

Arthur Bryant's is a smoky, tomato based flavor. Sauce is unbelievable, as are the ribs. It and Gates are diometrically opposed in terms of "feel," and I prefer Bryant's.

hurleyfor3,

Where are you staying in KC? There's lots of good KC-style barbecue around, but it's kinda all over the place.

As for Lawrence, I don't really do barbecue in Lawrence, but Biggs (http://www.biggsribs.com/) is supposedly pretty good. But when I head into Lawrence I generally try to do Mass Street. Good sandwich places are Jeffersons (http://jeffersonsrestaurant.com/) and Quintons (http://www.baranddeli.com/), both closer to Sixth Street. Free State (http://www.freestatebrewing.com/) is a microbrew joint with very good beer, good atmosphere and decent food. Tellers (http://www.746mass.com/) is also good, but to me, more of a night out joint than a stop before or after a game.

Back on KC barbecue (http://www.10best.com/Kansas_City,MO/Restaurants/Barbecue/), from the link at left, I think the best places are Oklahoma Joe's (http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com/)(especially the one near the Plaza located in a convenience store - the other one is located south in a concrete wasteland of Olathe), Gates (http://www.gatesbbq.com/), Jack Stack (http://www.jackstackbbq.com/info.asp?ii=2&sid=&eid=&tid=&bhcd2=1235144552), Arthur Bryants (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/) and Haywards (http://haywardsbbq.com/). Probably in that order.

I'm flying in tonight and staying in Overland Park through Sunday.

The game's at 3 on Saturday, so before or after the game in Lawrence would work well. I'm not flying out until Sunday evening, and was probably going to spend the day checking out the art museums and/or casinos. KC has always struck me as easy to get around, so it seems I can fit in anything downtown/river/ Country Club Plaza/OP kind of area.

Basketball, art, barbecue, gambling... trying to fit in the entire cultural spectrum here. :)

is there a thread on "what's the best place for barbecue" in Kansas City?

Why is it titled Duke vs Kansas (aka Duke vs Kentucky)?

What in fact does this have to do with Duke basketball?

If this were July or August, fine. But at the end of February????

MODS, do something with this. Drop a Roy Bomb on it or move it to the off topic board or just delete.

C'mon guys... this is BASKETBALL not BARBECUE time!!!

KC is pretty easy to drive - but not much in the way of public transportation. If you are staying in OP, there is a Jack Stack bbq at 95th & Metcalf and a Gates at 103rd & State Line and Hayward's is at College & Antioch.

The Nelson Atkins has several exhibits at the moment, as well as their permanent collection: http://www.nelson-atkins.org/

KC was fortunate to be home to Buck O'Neill - a most gracious gentleman. He was a driving force behind the Negro League Baseball Museum. Allenmurray - a trip to that museum is a good idea.

Sounds fun. Enjoy the game. Nebraska is feisty, though tiny. Check out the "new" (less than five years old) Booth Hall of Athletics that was built on the front of Allen Fieldhouse. Won't take long to run through. Kind of a KU hall of fame.

You're right that KC's easy to get around. And as for museums, if you do the Negro League Museum you should check out Bryants too. In the way of art museums, the Nelson-Atkins and Kemper (modern) are both near the Plaza. Both are fun. Cafe Sebastienne inside the Kemper is a good place to grab a quick, easy lunch.

Enjoy the cold. 58 today. 32 tomorrow.

is there a thread on "what's the best place for barbecue" in Kansas City?

It is well established that threads on barbecue are completely germane to the main board, and that they be titled "Duke vs. Kentucky". We have changed thread titles in the past that did not adhere to the latter requirement.

Also, I *am* a mod. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. The sculpture garden at Nelson-Atkins looks interesting but I think it'll be too cold, so I'll probably hit the Kemper. I knew you Kansas people who hang out here were good for something. :)

A few years ago, by some sort of Royal decree, the determination was made that threads about BBQ will always be on-topic and will be titled Duke vs. Kentucky. When this changes, plagues will fall upon the earth, cows will fly, and DBR will cease to exist. DukeDevilDeb, you are dealing with forces here far more powerful than you realize.

BBQ - As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, pig without end, Amen.

Being a relative newbie to DBR, I didn't know about this fiat from high, but I wholeheartedly agree with it. BBQ is always on topic!

Oddly enough, not knowing about the rule or why the thread was titled the way it was, I still read the whole thing. ;)

BBQ discussions are ALWAYS on topic. East vs West, NC vs Texas, Duke vs Kentucky. So it is written, so it will be...

Bumping in case people are making plans for the Duke/Kansas football game.

I had a fun weekend back in February, although getting out of Lawrence after the game was hell. If you're staying in metro KC I'd spend the afternoon hanging around Lawrence.

I'm late jumping into this thread but want to join the others in saying that the Negro Leagues museum is an absolute must if you're going to K.C. and have any interest at all in baseball.

Even if you are not interested in baseball it is a must. The history of the Negor Leagues parallels the history of civil rights in America. Even folks who are not fans of baseball (and I do feel sorry for them) will find the museum fascinating.

Somebody must have changed the rules. The BBQ threads have always been Duke vs Kentucky, regardless of the BBQ classes discussed, IIRC. I think I even recall Australian, or was it Canadian, BBQ discussed. If anybody is still going to Kansas City your best bet is Jacks Stack, at either location, Martin City or across the tracks from Union Station. Try the burnt ends. It's on the menu. By the way, Kansas City is a pretty nice place to visit.

KC is a nice town with beautiful plazas and fountains.

FWIW, I also hear that everything's up to date in Kansas City. They gone about as fer as they can go. They went an' built a skyscraper seven stories high. About as high as a buildin' orta grow.

Jack Stack also now has a location on the Plaza. FWIW.

Since coming from long distances makes tailgating a little tricky, I'd recommend hitting the Wheel (a short walk up sizable hills from Memorial Stadium) before the game. Breakfast and libations served starting around 8 a.m. You'll need something to ease the pain of the beat down.

With KU football returning to the level it used to occupy many years ago and Duke starting it's rise (return) to that level, I won't have to call the game the Mediocre Bowl that it could have been. I look forward to a close game - and, of course, am pulling for a Duke victory. (Thanks for helping me get tickets, Ozzie! You're the best.)

Ehh, yeah. Maybe. Frankly, this is about as good as KU's ever been in football. 12-1 Orange Bowl winning season was as good a season as KU's ever enjoyed. Followed up with another bowl winning season (albeit the bowl season has been vastly diluted). Should have a real shot at at least winning the Big XII north before losing to the south champ in the conference championship game. The season after this one will be the real test when Todd Reesing's gone. Then we'll see whether the program has a firm grounding or was just lucky in landing a special leader in Reesing.

I guess I'm was thinking Gale Sayers, John Riggins, Nolan Cromwell, and John Hadl and making them better in my mind than they were. I still remember watching the 1968 Orange Bowl loss - very sad event from my childhood.
