Time for the 2009 rendition of the Hurley Horse watch. I did not see any Hurley or Devil Eleven purchases at the major yearling or mixed sales this past year so they may be racing their existing stock. Keep your eyes out for any horses worth following.

This year's first entry is Stream Cat is running in this sunday's running of the San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita. A full field of 11 horses (sounds like the ACC tournament) will be going 9 furlongs. It is a tough assignment. Stream Cat had a January start that I missed (coming in 6th) but he should be rounding into shape. Stream Cat had only 4 starts last year; starting a
2nd time so soon could only mean that he is in decent shape. He figures to be the 3rd through the 5th choice, depending on scratches.

Stream Cat was scratched from the San Antonio Stakes. Hopefully they found a better spot for him in another race. For those of you who handicapped the race and want to see the result, here is the chart, courtesy of Brisnet:

If you happen to remember, please shoot me a PM if any Hurley horses make their way to Arlington this year. I'd like to try to get out there and catch the race.

Bobby Hurley's (and other's) Stream Cat will make his second start of the season in the 1 Million Dollar Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday at....Santa Anita. Stream Cat has the extreme outside post #14 and will carry 114 lbs. The field is loaded with top handicap horses from turf and dirt. Einstein and Court Vision from the turf; Colonel John and Court Vision from the dirt (and last year's triple crown trail). At 1 1/4 mile, this is a bit more of a challenge to the dirt horses than the turf horses who usually go longer distances. He'll need a good ride to see the wood from the 14 post too and cut down on the amount of ground he has to cover. Stream Cat will need his best effort to get a check. Einstein looks to be the more logical horse.

Also of interest, on of DBR's main articles has an interview with Bobby Hurley http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/qa-with-bobby-hurley
In it, Bobby Mentions that he "probably has five [horses]". Well, now you can see why I have a problem tracking his horses; if he isn't positive about the number of horses he has in training, what chance do I have?

Stream Cat had a tough time in the Santa Anita Handicap. He went wide in the first turn and was never really in the race. The turf horses Einstein and Champs Elysees finished 1 - 2 on the turf like artificial surface that is used at all California tracks (I bet you knew that).

Go Time will make his 2nd lifetime start at Gulfstream Park in the 5th race on Saturday. In a nice accommodation, the race will take place before the Duke game so Bobby can take in both events.

If you recall, Go Time won in a track record time at Monmouth Park. He won a 2 furlong race. It was the first (and only) time a 2 furlong race had been run. But he won by 2 lengths, and then he disappeared for 10 months and now reappears for his 3 year old debut for Devil Eleven Stable in a 5.5 furlong event at 4 -1 odds. He shows a bullet work at 4 furlongs. The other horses are a bit more experienced, but hopefully GT has some talent.

Stream Cat is entered into a small field at Santa Anita on Saturday. He is entered in the Tokyo City Stakes at Santa Anita at 1 1/2 miles on the dirt. There is a field of 7 and you can pick a reason to like or not each of the horses. The classiest competition looks to be Big Booster, who finished 3rd in the inaugural Breeders Cup Marathon last fall (I believe that may also have been the first Breeder's Cup race NOT shown on TV). But that horse has not raced for 5 months, is 8 years old, and finished 3rd in last year's Tokyo City Stakes. Other than that horse, Stream Cat is taking the biggest drop in class and has the best speed figures going into last year, although only a 3rd among them is a decent effort. I think he has a chance to get a big piece of the purse this week.

Stream Cat came from off the pace to win the Tokyo City Handicap by a neck over Big Booster who was coming up fast. Stream Cat was the 3rd choice and paid $11.40. The exacta was a lousy $13.50, but I digress....
A nice pick up for this horse who has been chasing the Grade I and Grade II level horses for the past year.

Devil Eleven Stable's Aspasia is making her 4th lifetime start, first since December, in a maiden claiming race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday 4/11/09 in the 6th race. She is in for a tag of $30K and has post position 3. If she's sharp, she can win this race. Here is the past performance information, courtesy of brisnet:
http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/toddpletcher_144337.pdf

Also, Tiger Woodman is racing on Saturday too. Tiger Woodman is now owned solely by John Goldthorpe, who was once partners with Bobby Hurley on this same horse. That race is at Keeneland, Race 10. Here is the past performance, courtesy of brisnet:

I will not be covering Tiger Woodman anymore since he is not related directly to Hurley's enterprises anymore.

Go Go Shoot is in to Go Go Go on Saturday at Delaware Park in Race 9 in the $75K Moscarelli Memorial S.. This is a moderate but select set of horses. Bullet works all over the page. Go Go Shoot has had 7 months off; his first extended time off since going into training, so he should have come back with some significant growth but could understandably be short here. I look for him to win some experience.

Aspasia is entered in for a tag at Calder RAce Course on Saturday in Race 3. She is entered for $32K (you want a piece of her?). This appears to be a drop down in company to give her some confidence. I could not locate any Past Performance documents for her.

Looking through the Past Performances, I noticed that Go Go Shoot is no longer a Hurley horse. He is now owned by Repole Stable.

It still would be good for the horse to do well. 1) It shows that you can buy a good horse from Hurley's connections 2) The horse is still by Hurley's stallion Songandaprayer.

On to the next horse...

Go Go Shoot finished 8th in his first race in a long time. In his usual style, he went to the front, but he wasn't in condition to hold the position against experienced sprinters.

Although this horse is not longer a Hurley stable member, he is a DevilEleven Stable breeding credit. So we will take note of his progress from time to time.

Stream Cat is in to go in the Gallant Man Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday May 17, 2009. He has post 7 in this $100K affair that appears to be on the Polytrack, which is a turflike synthetic surface. The route is 1 5/8 miles, but all of these horses look like they can go a distance. This will be a tougher race than the last one.

I don't know if you noticed, but there was a pretty good race at Pimlico this weekend. A lot of firsts in that race. Let's hope all horses come out of the race well and we see these horses butt heads again later this year, perhaps in 3 weeks.

Go Time is enter in the 3rd race at Calder Race Course. It's entered for a tag of $16K in the claiming race for a purse of $13K that is being contested at 6 furlongs. She is 5-1 and is coming back at the same distance as her previous race with a decent public work out since then. It's a field of 10 with a couple of fillies with decent credentials. I look for Go Time to be competitive.

Go Time has won her claiming race in grand style. Unlike many of the Devil Eleven/Hurley other horses, she did not use her natural speed and held it in reserve and stayed near the pace and took over near mid stretch for a decisive victory as the second choice. The pace seemed reasonable, although the final time seems a bit slow but par for this class. But a win is a win. Congratulations for this horses connections; we hope the horse moves forward off of this effort.

Aspasia is entered at Calder Race Course on Thursday 7/9/09 in Race 8, post 2 of 8. It is a 6 furlong affair for claimers. Aspasia is entered for a $32K tag in this maiden claiming event. Her last effort was lackluster. But, if Aspasia is ready to run, she will be competitive with these horses. She has Sanchez back up and an inside post again. She should be sitting on a big effort if the weather is favorable to complement her front-running style.

Stream Cat is in to go in the $200K Arlington Handicap at....Arlington Park. He has post 11 of 13, which is no advantage, but it is a 10 furlong race and Turf races usually allow for some paceless jostling before the contenders sprint at the end; and Stream Cat can be a contender here. Stream Cat shows one sharp 5F workout. Although he has been out for 55 days (most have these horses have been out over a month) he could be ready to take a stab at this purse. He has shown that he likes this track before at the Arlington Million 2 years ago.

Folks,

There is an interesting horse racing at Calder in the 8th race on Saturday July 11. Truest Legend looks to be an up and coming sprinter that was bred by Bobby Hurley. He was sold as a yearling for $130K and pinhooked the next spring for $240K. He did not have a good outing as a 2YO and was turned out. But he has turned it around as a 3YO and makes his stakes debut tomorrow, flying in from California; might have hitched a ride with Bob Baffert's horse (he might regret giving him a lift).

Here is the past performance pages, courtesy of Brisnet:
http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/baffert_155131.pdf

Also, Go Go Shoot has won a couple of stake races at Monmouth this past month, and he's looked good. He's no longer owned by Devil Eleven Stables, but he is still (and will continue to be) bred by Bobby Hurley.

Stream Cat is in at Arlington Park on Saturday August 1 in Race 7. 1 3/16 for $50K on the turf. This is a dropdown in class that should suit Stream Cat and help build some confidence. He is carrying a bit more weight than his competitors, but has some back class that should help. This is the first time in a while that he is racing within a reasonable time since a previous race, which means he should be tight for this. The last time he raced in short order like this he won. Any other opinions out there...?

A word about Hurley breeding credit Go Go Shoot (GGS). Check out this chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:
http://www.drf.com/drfPDFChartRacesIndexAction.do?TRK=SAR&CTY=USA&DATE=20090809&RN=10

Fabulous Strike, Kodiak Kowboy, and Benny The Bull are serious sprinters. Go Go Shoot has shown improved performances under Bruce Levine. Perhaps GGS has found himself as a 4YO. In either case, Bobby Hurley has established himself as a breeder of a quality stakes horse and as someone who others can buy, and (sometimes) improve off of. That is not a bad thing when you want to sell your stock at another time in the future.

This was last year's Debutante for 2YOs at Churchill Downs. CC was 7 to 1. Check out the horse the finished 2nd in the race. None other than Rachel Alexandra at odds of 8 to 1. Do you think Bobby would have swapped horses before the race??

Aspasia (not so) fresh off her maiden win on 9/8/09 is in to go in a 5 1/2 furlong $10K claiming race at Calder Race Course. It is the 2nd race and carries and $8.5K purse. Well, there seems to be NOTHING going on lately on this site :D, so I thought I'd feed the furlong fever with some pre-Breeder's Cup Hurley Hoopla with a semi-sidenote that touches on our favorite Horse Entrepreneur.

I found this horse, From Half Court, bred by Devil Eleven stables winning a race this past week at Beulah Park. From Half Court is out of Hurley sire Songandaprayer, out of the mare Particular Style by Deputy Minister. This horse shows 39 starts, 7 wins, and about $100K in earnings through this his 4 year old year. He is a gelding.

It doesn't have all issues yet, but it does have some very good years and especially some famous Kentucky Derby issues. The folks there are receptive to input on features for the site. Nice resource. Enjoy.

Congratulations. Looks like a good one.

She can be had for $6250. She is certainly very competitive at this level.

It is an old rule of thumb that a horse should race at a claiming price that is about what they earn in a year. She certainly costs much more than $6250 to maintain and train, unless you are a trainer and own the place where you are training her. She'll need to race for a much higher purse successfully before I could make a business model to support her without those conditions. Although since she just won at this level (making $5K at a clip) and remains there, it looks to me that they are trying to get rid of her since they are racing her below her apparent ability. She is a young horse, with relatively few races, and has progressed (ability-wise) past this class. Yet she remains in $5K claimers.

Aspasia just holds on to beat the odds on favorite in her race. To top it off, she is claimed out of the hands of the Devil Eleven Stable and will no longer be tracked (closely) by this thread. Best wishes to the new owners.

I came across an interesting name the other day.

For those of you who remember Shirley "Red" Wilson from the late '70s/early '80s, they'll remember the tag line of their initial marketing campaign.

Redmeansgo won a $5000 claiming race for a purse of $2800. She is a 6 YO mare by Apache Max out of See Red Run. Her Breeders are Nancy and Harold Dresser of Maine.

I happened to be interested in the horse who finished 4th in that race (the grandchild of a horse I once bred, raised, and raced).

On an otherwise bad day for Devil Eleven Stables (see http://dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18383) Cheeca Storm came through with a good effort to win her race.
Looks like she stalked the pace, took the lead, but drifted out in the stretch; she could have been tired (less tired than adversaries), afraid of the whip, didn't like the looks of something on the infield, or hurting on her left side amongst other possible explanations.
