I am surprised there has been no thread started for this game. All I know is that they are in the MACC and were rated highly last year. Is there anyone who can fill us in?

I am headed for sunny Florida on New Years Day and will also be interested in Duke coverage down there. ESPN and CBS should be available by cable.

Loyola is 4-8 on the season including losses to Boston College, Davidson, and NC State. They played State tough dropping a 62-60 decision last night. The Greyhounds' three leading scorers are guards. Their leading rebounder is a 6'5" forward.

I don't know anything about them other than what I found on ESPN.COM

Can't wait for us to finally play a game. Sucks to have two different 11 day layoffs in the same month. Brutal.

IIRC, they were the team that doubled Curry every possession in the Davidson game and basically left the rest of the team to play 4 on 3. Should be a good tune-up for ACC play and the Davidson game next wednesday.

Here we go!!

I think Bob Green pretty well nailed it. They are real small and also very young team, but gave an injured NC State team a battle to the end.

Singler, Thomas and Zoubek should have their way with this short team.

Pomeroy predictor has it Duke 92 Loyola 58 and I think it will be a tad closer at 84-63.

Loyola (Md) is 4-8 and coached by former Maryland assistant Jimmy Patsos. Until they almost beat NC State last night, they were best known this year for their inventive use of the triangle and 2 defense against Davidson. It was inventive because the 2 man-to-man defenders both guarded Stephen Curry. It worked in that they held Curry to zero points. It didn't work in that they lost by 78-48.

That led to this hilarious e-mail (http://deadspin.com/5102035/the-moonstruck-rather-wacky-email-from-jimmy-patsos-to-kornheiser-and-wilbon) from Patsos about the situation. I think the crazy trickled down from Gary quite nicely :)

My visual memory of Patsos is him sitting on the bench behind Gary Williams and seeming being the target of every barb aimed at the bench from Williams during a game. When interviewed by locals, he comes accross as an outgoing guy who enjoyed his time at Maryland. I don't recall whether it was Patsos or his replacement at Catholic, Mike Lonergren (now at Vermont), but a neighbor's boy a few years ago was a good player (played at Cornell) and attended basketball camps for as far back as I can remember, including a camp at Catholic. The dad was very complementary of the teaching done at the camp.

A piece of trivia - I believe that one of the sons of Greg Manning is an assistant at Loyola. I remember Greg shooting baskets with his boys at the basketball courts in Bethany Beach when they were little. Time flies for us old guys.

That email is hysterical!

As an American I wish we had leaders like McKillop and Curry, who could have gotten the CIA and FBI to talk so we could have prevented the 9-11 tragedy, or saw that Fannie Mae was creating a mortgage crisis coming which could cripple a country.
Patsos is a bit myopic, isn't he?

I can't wait for tomorrow's game. It should be a fun one to watch.

Go Blue Devils!

I saw in today's N&O that we are a 29 point favorite. I don't doubt that we are that much better than Loyola (if we shoot well, or, take the ball inside if we're not), but I don't think we'll win by 29. We'll probably (hopefully) get up by 30+ and then back off the defensive pressure and mess around on offense to hold the score down, like we did against Xavier and unc-A, and win by something in the teens. Just seems to be our motis operendi (sp?) this year.

How would Loyola compare to UNCA? I want to know if the backups will get as much time as they did during the UNCA game.

We should not take any team for granted this season if we want to stay on top of our game!!

I do agree with a comment above, these layoffs in the same month are brutal!!!

I don't watch as many other teams play as I used to, but does everyone else have as much trouble with their clocks as we do? I notice once or twice a year clock trouble, usually over the winter break. Or is it just selective memory on my part?

Looks like a left knee injury. Hope he just sprained it and nothing is torn...

this sucks

He's back on the bench, so it doesn't seem too bad.

We're 1-8 on 3-pointers at the half. We're still up 48-23 though. Henderson had a great first half. Zoubek played really well too... 6 points and 7 rebounds so far.

I am concerned about Nolan not being 100% with conference play looming Sunday. The situation depletes our backcourt similar to the Paulus injury in '07 if he misses an extended period.

Cameron

We had 36 points with something like a minute and a half remaining, and we concluded the half with nearly 50. During that bang bang spurt we didn't hit one triple.

We can flat out run and score when our pressure D is at its finest, which it was to end the half. (Granted we are playing the state of Maryland's version of a Loyola.)

Trying to listen to WSFL at the break in order to see what Bob Harris and John Roth have to say about Henderson, but to no avail right now. I might have missed there update.

Very worried about Nolan. It was good to see him back on the bench fairly quickly. Whole season flashed before my eyes when he limped off the court.

I'm waiting on pins and needles for K's post game presser on Nolan....I seriously am this nervous. Last thing we need is another lingering injury from a PG.

I can think of several different years that that has been our praxis. Dare I bring up the infamous Boston College game from '07? A near 30 point second half lead almost swindled with less than four to play.

We won't go there, though. That road is best left untraveled, I think.

Laurence reported Nolan is ok, just keeping him out of the game as precaution.

Yes indeed. I feared for my life when I brought up "slowball" last season.

Glad to hear Nolan appears to be OK--that would have been a tough injury to deal with right at the beginning of ACC play. Team looks great right now, especially Zoubek. Don't want to get greedy, but I'd sure love to get that 100-point monkey off our backs. :p

Was only halfway listening to the TV, but I just heard something regarding Nolan being out for "some time". Not sure whether it was phrased hypothetically--can anyone clear this up?

There's a giant difference between our starting five and second five. It's not even close. Paulus, Pocius, E-Will, Thomas, and McClure are painful to watch when they're all on the court at once. Luckily, they're good as a part of the rotation.

I believe it was a hypothetical posed to Elmore.

Did anyone else catch Jimmy Dykes' analysis of Duke in which he said Duke will have to work harder than anyone else to overcome their lack of size? Duke has 5 guys 6'8" or taller that see decent time. That's similar to several other top teams, including UNC, which makes me wonder: what they heck are these analysts thinking when they say these things? Do they even look at the roster of the team they are covering?

Great to hear. Was on the phone so I wasn't paying the game the attention I should have. Hopefully he'll be ready to go for VT.
