I was surprised to find that the Mountaineers are coming into the Charlotte bowl game* as a 1.5 point favorite, with an injured secondary, in what amounts to a home game for the Tar Heels. I notice Sagarin has Carolina by three.

The ESPN people say Pat White has the chance today to become the first QB to go 4-0 as a starter in bowl games. It surprises me that has never happened before.

* - I have ceased to refer to non-BCS bowl games by anything other than their location. That tends to stay the same.

This bowl game is definetly a home game for unc. Charlotte is Chapel Hell West. There are more unc fans there than anywhere in the US. Go Mountaineers, but even more than that...Go Duke!

When our receivers can go up and make catches like that we're really going to turn a corner. Fun game so far, go Mountaineers!

Looks like better WV fan turnout than I expected.

Um... defense?

That doesn't look like a safety to me. I think he just got it across, should be reviewed at least. Does the entire ball need to get across or just any part of it?

Um... defense?

Seriously. I'm sitting here saying to myself - at the beginning of the 2nd half - first team to play defense wins. And then WV goes and makes a nice goal line stand. Of course UNC turns around and has one good defensive play to turn it into a safety. So far, just a handful of good defensive plays that I've seen (I'm semi-paying attention to it).

WVU isn't a candy pants ACC school; they travel. Anyway, it's less than 400 miles from Morgantown to Charlotte, and the overwhelming majority of the state is closer.

Yates throws a game-ending INT straight to WVU's Lazier! Go Mountaineers.

Career high passing day for Pat White. 27-33, 344 yards. What a great player.

I'm glad Nicks is probably going to the NFL this season.

I was also all set to console my UNC fan wife by commenting as the game was ending. I was going to tell her how much UNC had improved since last season, what a great recruiting class they have coming in to bolster a young squad. But as I got ready to say something she just glared at me and asked me how Duke had done in their bowl game. All could do was mutter something like "Well, they didn't lose." Lame response from me, but her snappiness made it easier to enjoy the UNC loss.

About as good a response as you could have come up with. Wait till next year!

What makes you think Nicks is going pro next year? Did he say something (I didn't watch the game)?

What I get from my UNC fan "friends" is that the scouts really, really like Nicks, and that his family could really use the money. They seemed resigned to a very slim chance of him returning next year.

Well, she's a UNC fan. I'm a Duke fan. So there is probably a bit of pre-emptive attitude on both our parts. :o

The Mountaineers had a good day all around. They dee-stroyed previously undefeated Ohio State in hoops. In Columbus!

This game was simply the cherry on top of Pat White's career. Sad to see him go. WVU should retire his number but only two numbers have been retired by WVU (Jerry West and Sam Huff). White should be the third.

Pat White has (over the past four years) 24 NCAA, Big East and WVU career records:

1, 2, 3 – NCAA, Big East and WVU career quarterback rushing - 4,480 yards

4, 5 –Big East, WVU career touchdown responsibility - 103

6 –WVU career 200-yard rushing games (any position) - 4

7, 8 –Big East, WVU single-game QB rushing yards - 247 (vs. Syracuse, 2006; White has four of the top five QB rushing games in Big East history)

9, 10 –Big East, WVU single-season quarterback rushing - 1,335 in 2007

11, 12 –Big East, WVU single-game rushing touchdowns by quarterback - 4 (vs. Syracuse and Louisville, 2006; shared with Temple’s Walter Washington, vs. WVU, 2003)

13 – Big East single-game yards per rush (any position) - 16.5 (15 carries, 247 yards vs. Syracuse, 2006)

14 – Big East single-season yards per rush (any position) - 7.4 (1,219 yards on 165 carries, 2006)

15 –WVU single-game completion percentage — .900 (18-of-20, vs. East Carolina, 2007)

16 –WVU single-season completion percentage — .659 (118-of-179 in 2006)

17 –Mountaineer Field single-game touchdown passes - 5 (vs. Villanova, 2008; shared with Pete Gonzalez, Pitt, 1997)

18, 19 –Big East, WVU career total offense - 10,525 yards

20 –WVU single-game total offense - 424 yards (vs. Pitt, 2006; shared with Marc Bulger vs. Missouri, Insight Bowl, 19

21 –WVU total offense for a sophomore - 2,874 yards (2007)

22, 23, 24 – Bowl wins as starting quarterback - 4 (2006 Sugar, 2007 Gator, 2008 Fiesta, 2008 Car Care)
