This is a traditional debate, and I figured I'd pose it on the DBR.
Homintaschen vs. Latkes?
Whoops... no poll. For those of you who are unfamiliar, here is a 10 minute sample from the folks at Johns Hopkins:

ETA: Whoops... this is just the latke side of the debate.

I can't believe there's even a debate about this. How disappointing.
The fact that you would even mention those nasty little cookies in the same sentence as latkes is an abomination.
You may have to be stripped of your Hanukkah Harry title for this thread. Seriously.
BTW, I like mine (latkes) with applesauce. No sour cream.

Awesome. I had no idea about this. I've never had homintaschen before, but I think I can safely say that I'd much rather eat latkes. I'll take them with sour cream 9/10 times.

Umm, this has been going on now for 60+ years in many universities around the country. UChicago started it. I was asked to do it one year at Emory, but then plans fell through. It usually pumps up the Hillel and other organizations on campus. There is also a book about it.

A good time is had by all. It's really something to see a couple of your professors go at it.
FWIW, I'm no applesauce, no sour cream. But also note: a latke pairs well with He Brew Genesis Ale.:D
Triangular cookies pair better with coffee.:o
Which one do you think I'd choose?:D

Apple sauce for the latkes. Save the sour cream for the cheese blintzes! And I like homintaschen too - apricot and raspberry for me.

Agreed-- this not even a debate. Latkes rule and are one of my favorite foods (with or without the applesauce-- better with). Hommintashen is a mediocre version of a cake-like cookie. I would rather eat an Oreo.

Agreed...except for the homintaschen part (never liked them). Try cherry blintzes too!

latkes ... but not in a blowout. My mom makes sweet potato latkes - they are fantastic.

I don't know, but I like the guy's argument that the latke should be chosen because of the economy, national security, and the issue of character.:D
"The pickle we are in [the economic crisis] is due in no small part to the hamantash."
"Potatoes are from Idaho, Middle America, the real America..."
The parody of things from this year's election was pretty good too. I like the preference for the Town Hall Forum.
Here's a youtube snippet of a university-based Hamantash response from MIT:

Clearly, the Hamantash side is a difficult one to defend.

I am not even sure I have a recipe. I take the matzah and crush it between my fingers until it is in about quarter-sized chunks. I crack a couple eggs and pour in a bit of milk. The mix should be more eggy than milky. I typically add some cinnamon as well as some salt and mix the whole thing up until it is more liquid than solid (but it is best if the matzah pieces are not crushed too much). I pour some oil in a pan, not too much, and then pour in pancake-sized portions of the mixture. Flip em when they are brown, like a regular pancake.
I have no idea the amounts of any of these ingredients. I do it all by feel and from the experience of having made these for many years. Sorry that is not more help.

Kew Gardens hospital is now a big black office building with a Jack LaLanne (sp?). The Queens DA is also in that building BTW.
I went to the school right up Union Turnpike from there - Kew Forest (get it? Kew Gardens + Forest Hills. Quite clever)
