Stanford only up by 1 over Yale in the 2nd half.
Kentucky losing by 10 at halftime to VMI.
Rhode Island losing to Brown by 4 at home at the half.

I love scrolling through scoreboards. Hope Johnny Dawkins can avoid an embarrassing opening loss.

Stanford did lose a ton from their team last year but they should still be able to beat Yale. If Kentucky loses that might dash the Title hopes that a few UK fans have been talking about on other boards.

Yeah... I saw the Stanford score and am pulling for JD really hard.

I think that because Stanford used to play a system that was radically different from JD's, it's going to take quite a while to adjust.

Wake was very impressive tonight winning 94-48 and shooting 60% from the floor. Just 2-11 from behind the arc though, I wonder if a bigger team will be able to play zone against them and give them problems.

111-103?!?!

That score takes me back to the Loyola Marymount days when Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers were firing up a 3 every 10 seconds or so.

There is a whole page probably over 30 threads on the game. I will give them credit though they have 4000 fans online.

Folks who may have missed it will be happy to hear that JD won his first game at Stanford, 75-67, over Yale. This will likely be a tough season for Johnny and he has quite a bit of a rebuilding job to do at Stanford. Still, nice to get things started with a W.

The Hokies squeaked out a 3 point win over Gardner-Webb, the team that beat Kentucky in their opener last year.

UK is improving. Last year they lost to the Webb by 16, this year the deficit is halved.

Yeah, I checked out their board; "only" 3868 online at the time; their record is 16,011 online when Tubby Smith left.

Amazing fan support, but I don't mind seeing them lose a few. ;)

As an alumn of VMI (undergrad) and Duke (grad) last nights win was unbelievably satisfying. I'm so proud of the Keydets - they've waited decades for a win like this. As a Duke fanatic, there's that quiet happiness that comes with the embarrassing loss for the likes of a Kentucky, UCONN, Maryland, or of course, UNC.
Awesome.

They only shot 3s because they never found a 4-point line.

I'm not sure which one of you posts the stories on the main page, but the part about Wake has a big inaccuracy. It says that it would be a major disappointment for Wake to have lost by the BYU game. However, Wake plays in the Anaheim classic with Arizona State, Baylor, and St. Mary's, which are solid teams. ASU has Herb's offense which would be a direct contrast in style to Wake. Harden and Pendergraft are very good players and they will certainly be a top challenger in the Pac 10. Honestly, I would be surprised if we were able to win that tourney so early in the season. Maybe in February, but not in November.

What a strange game for Kentucky (I watched much of it on DirecTV chan #648, which is some variation of FoxSports South).

Their two young PG's, Liggins and Porter, combined for 12 turnovers. VMI had no good matchup for Patrick Pattterson down low, but Patterson took only 4 shots and scored 8 points total. VMI just bombed away from outside, hit everything for a while, got cold in the 2nd half, lost their lead with 2 or 3 minutes left, but played with poise and pulled away at the end.

Actually, it's wa-a-a-y too early to be measuring RPI. But it doesn't hurt that Duke's future opponents are now 20-2 after the first full night of action.

That includes a 7-0 record for the ACC. Mostly easy wins over lightweight competition. The one exception was Virginia Tech's 3-point win at home over Gardner-Webb. Interesting game -- Tech was up 14 at the half and led all the way. Up 10 with just over five minutes left, Gardner-Webb managed a 9-0 run to close to one ... Delaney hit two free throws for the Hokies and GW missed two 3-point attempts in the final seconds.

Most of the other wins for Duke's future opponents were equally lopsided tuneups. Two exceptions -- UNCAsheville had to fight its way from behind after trailing Belmont Abbey most of the way and Rhode Island had to rally to beat Brown by three.

The two losses -- Loyola was beaten 84-76 by Mt. Saint Mary's ... Montana was hammered (85-55) by Colorado State.

Five more ACC teams in action today -- NC State at New Orleans might be the best of the bunch ... Three more Sunday, including Duke-RIU. The best might be Clemson-Temple in the finals of the tournament in Charleston, if both win today.

Another big ACC game Sunday -- VMI, fresh off their victory at Kentucky, visits Charlottesville to take on the Cavs. That ought to tell us something about the team picked to finish last in the ACC!
