MBB Duke vs. Rhode Island Pre-Game thread

The Rhode Island game on Sunday is at 4:30 EST, not 7:00 as it appears on the DBR schedule. Both goduke.com and the ESPNU TV schedule show the game to be at 4:30.

My most enduring memory of Rhode Island was in '88. We were in the NCAA sub-regional in the Dean Dome. UNC got shipped out when the NCAA decided not to allow host schools to play at home (the last year they used the Dome in the NCAAs).

Rhode Island wore Carolina blue and had a ram mascot. They even played some of UNC's songs, too. Truly surreal.

As I recall, we beat them in the Sweet 16 in a squeaker.

Looks like Rhode Island won a squeaker over Brown, 76-74, after trailing most of the game.

Rhode Island was led by Jimmy Baron with 17 points. Baron is a 6'3" shooting guard who made 40% of his 3-point attempts last year. 6'8" 235 power forward Kahiem Seawright scored 15 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Seawright was the leading rebounder in the Atlantic 10 last season. 6'4" Guard Keith Cothran added 16 points. Rhode Island recorded 12 assists against only 3 turnovers.

As a long time Duke fan who was not smart enough to get in as a student, I was rudely greeted my first day as a student at URI when I realized the fight song was the same as Carolina's. I've tried to research who had the song first, but have had little success. The only information that I've found says that URI had it one year earlier. In my opinion, URI has more right to the alliterative Rhode Island Ram then the ram as as UNC's mascot. And lastly, URI's blue is technically Keaney blue, named for a Chemistry professor way back, not Carolina blue! But then again, I'm more than biased in that debate.

Tomorrow is going to be rough day for me though. I can't root against Duke, but I also have a hard time seeing the old alma mater beaten badly. I don't remember feeling this conflicted back in 98 when URI had the lead on Stanford and I was sure Duke was going to beat Kentucky...

In most games, as an undersized team, their best hope will be to move fast and strike quick.

I do not agree with this description. They actually have good size:

Lamonte Ulmer - 6'6" 215
Will Martel - 7'0" 245

Miles Plumlee, Brian Zoubek, and Lance Thomas need to match-up against Rhode Island's interior players and get the job done. I do not want to see Kyle Singler having to do the dirty work inside in this game. Singler getting into foul trouble could be a problem.

In their first game against Brown, Martel only played 10 minutes, and Francis didn't play at all. So in terms of the size that will actually be on the floor, we match up pretty well, and we can always have Zoubek match Martel's 10 minutes. (Also-- 7 foot, only 245 lbs? Can that be right?)
