3 stars given from rivals.com. (http://smu.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=76087) Separated at birth from Josh McRoberts by the look of the photo. But most important, even though he is not the cream of the crop, he is a Californian. Besides being JD's first recruit, it shows he can recruit out west as well as in the east. Congrats to JD. I don't doubt that he will have recruiting success, but it's good to see he got it started.

I love JD, but one fo the things he must do better at if he is to become a big success at Stanford is recruiting. His 2009 class is pretty darn weak by Stanford standards. Certainly, some of the blame for that can be laid at the feet of the previous administration. Judging a coach's ability to recruit after only one class is somewhat absurd...

But still, JD is yet to bring in a very highly regarded recruit. He is at a school that has spent a fair amount of time in the top 25 in recent years and which has high basketball aspirations. He needs to bring in kids who can get him back to that level.

Long gone are the days of Mike Montgomery. I wish him the best, but I'm glad he's getting his experience on Stanford's dime. I don't think it will turn out well for either party.

Was JD ever our lead recruiter? Recently, he stayed at home while Wojo and Chris hit the trail, fufilling, I believe, a deal with his wife and kids.

As well as JD relates to people, I can't see him being less than successful, but he may need to develop his salesmanship.

Its pretty damn hard to recruit at stanford given that the recruits have to be admitted into the school before they can be offered an official scholarship. In todays basketball climate that severely limits the number of targets you can pursue.

I don't think that will fly too well with Stanford fans:

1. Mike Montgomery recruited well and won big at Stanford
2. Stanford just won their 15th(!) straight Directors Cup for overall athletic excellence
3. With Jim Harbaugh at the helm, the Cardinal football program had a top 20 class for 2009 (according to rivals.com) and a highly rated class for 2010 so far

Excellence is expected at The Farm.

Brown told scout.com the Stanford head coach won him over with comparisons to Dawkins' own situation.

Looks like Stanford landed another 3 star for 2010 - Josh Huestis. He's ranked as the 21st best SF in the 2010 class.

Biography:
Can score, rebound, play defense and block shots. Averaged more than 10 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 15 points per game as a junior in 2008-09 to lead C.M. Russell High to a 21-2 record and the Class AA state title. Was state tourney MVP. Also earned AA All-State and Great Falls Tribune Super State honors. Physical players, but needs to bulk up for college game. As a sophomore in 2007-08 season he earned first-team all-conference, all-AA tournament and second-team East All-State honors.

I got in late here on the East Coast last night and got suckered into the last 10 minutes of Stanford vs Oklahoma State (at Stanford).

Johnny's boy's were 10 down for most of the last 10 minutes but played solid ball down the stretch and had the ball down one with a chance to win on the final possession. They couldn't get the ball to their star, Landry Fields, and instead big sophomore Andrew Zimmerman, who'd scored the last 6 Stanford pts on nice set-ups by Fields, tried to go one-on-one and missed. Game over. Needless to say, the Dawkins eye bulge was on full display, he seemed to be thinking, "That's not how I drew it up".

Anyway, that kid Fields is a lot of fun to watch. The announcer called him a poor man's Kyle Singler - he's not as good a shooter but that's the general idea.

It was also fun to see that trademark man to man being played by a team not at the same talent level as Duke. There was also a lot more play calling on offense - but it still felt like a K disciple was running the show.
