I hinted at #10 being retired in another thread, but nobody took the bait. What are the chances?

I don't know. Does our AD give a rat's *** about women's basketball?

I don't know. Does our AD give a rat's *** about women's basketball? He gave enough of one to retire #20 a few years ago.

And Alana wasn't NPOY, if I recall -- Diana Taurasi was that year (or was it Sue Bird? one of those evil UConns). So that shouldn't be an obstacle.

Beard won at least one NPOY award in 2004, though it was after her jersey had been retired.

Taurasi won the Naismith, Beard got pretty much everything else.

2 cents:

I think she was one free throw from getting her jersey retired.

Hit one of two, and we are likely to have gone to the final four and may well have won the whole thing (and if we lost, she wouldn't be the symbol of the loss). With that, she would likely have won a couple NPOY's despite the fact that Candace Parker is probably the better overall player.

Missing the shots makes it hard for her to get NPOY, and while NDPOY, I think she comes up just short since she wasn't the best player on the team as recently as last year. Of course, Shelden got his jersey retired and was never POY, but he was twice the defensive player and an elite player for several years and probably just squeaked by.

On the other hand, who knows?

In addition to being selected as a first team AP All-American and WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year, Lindsey has also been named to ESPN.com's All-American Team and has been selected as ESPN.com's Player of the Year.

The ESPN award is not one of the major ones (though Duke appears to be trumpeting it as one in its presser). All of the big awards come out from this weekend through next week, including the all-important Wade Trophy on Saturday (once won by #20 herself). Most, if not all, of the voting was likely done before this past weekend. Therefore, Lindsey still stands a good chance at winning at least some of the major awards. Should she win at least one of the awards, the other #10 should be retired and hang opposite the original.

Of course, someone recently got his jersey retired for being NDPOY, so who really knows what Duke will do as there are no "official retirement standards."

BTW, someone should tell Joe Alleva who recruited and coached Duke's 2 NPOYs in women's basketball, he doesn't seem to know.
