With the commitment of Kelly, there were a whispered comparisons of Ryan to another highly touted Triangle recruit, Shavlik Randolph. Many considered Shav to be a bust, but he's managed to eke out an NBA career so far. A great example of the progress that he's made can be seen tonight, when he played with the Portland Trailblazers in a pre-season game against the Atlanta Hawks. Shav's stats for the night were:

19 points (9-9 shooting!), 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks.

He even had a better game than his teammate, Greg Oden. If Shav can keep this level of play up, he may have secured himself a spot on a very exciting and young Portland roster!

Wow - though it is preseason. He was really hampered by injury in his couple years at Duke. I'm glad things seem to be looking up for him.

This is a link that has good action photos of Shav. This game might close his deal on making the team. I hope so. Its too bad injuries prevented showcasing his talent while at Duke.

I was looking at the stats during game time, they must have sat him for most of the 4th, because while in the 3rd when I looked, he already had 17, Pretty sweet.

They probably did. It looks like he played 20 minutes, which is pretty normal for preseason games. This is a team's one chance to really try different combinations without worrying about consequences.

Just like K put in a good word for Chris Duhon with D'Antoni which carried weight after the two coaches worked together for so long for the Olympics, I think K might also positively influence McMillan when it comes to Shav's chance to make Portland's roster. Just a guess.
