The N&O is reporting Shavlik Randolph is going to sign with the Trailblazers (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/prepsnow/shavlik-randolph-expected-to-sign-with-trailblazers). Pretty cool to see him still playing in the NBA, I don't see any contract details. Hopefully he will have a full injury free season. We'll see if he can do what McRoberts couldn't.

Congrats to Shav.

It might be tough to get PT there given their roster, but he's exceeded expectations in the NBA before.

Hope he has a solid season.

He just gets to compete for the very last roster spot in training camp. Chances are he's the one that gets cut but he's defied some odds before.

Portland is an emerging power. This year they add Greg Oden, back from injury, and Rudy Fernandez, the Spanish guard who was terrific in the Olympic Gold Medal game.

It could come down to Shav versus McJosh for an NBA paycheck.

Jason knows that McRoberts doesn't play for Portland anymore.

He's just testing us to see if we're paying attention.

Yeah sure, whatever. The best thing about Oregon and about the only thing positive is their Pinot Noir, it's great but you need an NBA paycheck to buy it.

I'll disagree with that-heartily:

1. City of Roses
2. Mt. Hood
3. Mt. Batchelor
4. Columbia Gorge
5. Bend
6. Crater Lake
7. Skiing
8. Wind-surfing
9. Fishing
10. Hiking
11. Marion/ligon/black berries
12. Largest (or one of) # of microbreweries in the US:D
13. Growing # varietal wines

Need more?

Too true, NBA paychecks are for La Tache.

Pretty harsh. Never been, but in the bay area there's lot's of people who have been to or at somepoint lived in portland, and they all speak highly of it.

I've been reading some of the fan comments from the story, most don't seem thrilled. One guy has dubbed him McRandolph...which I think is actually pretty funny. Others have qualms with his past related feelings on gays, which don't seem to fit in too well with most of them. Sounds like if he earns a roster spot, he's going to have to win some folks over.

Shav has a shot at making the roster here. Here are the guys you know are going to be on the roster on opening day:

LaMarcus Aldridge (PF)
Jerryd Bayless (PG)
Rudy Fernandez (WG)
Greg Oden (C)
Travis Outlaw (SF/PF)
Martell Webster (WG)
Steve Blake (PG)
Channing Frye (C)
Brandon Roy (WG)
Raef LaFrentz (C)
Joel Przybilla (C)
Ike Diogu (PF)
Sergio Rodriguez (PG)
Nicolas Batum (WG)

That’s 14 guys who under contract for the upcoming season. The team could opt to eat a salary from one of them and open up a roster spot (LaFrentz springs to mind here) but we’re talking about a team right now that’s paying Steve Francis somewhere in the neighborhood of $15M this season to play for another team. They’re also paying Darius Miles $9M this season to be retired although Miles is now trying to make the Celtics. The bonus for the Blazers is that if Miles ends plays a certain number of games over the next 2 seasons then his salary counts against the Blazers’ salary cap.

Essentially what that means is that the Blazers are unlikely to cut any of these guys unless it’s really clear they won’t contribute. Really the only candidate would be LaFrentz who is in the last year of a ~$13M contract and is likely gone for the year on the injured list.

What that means for Shav is that he’s part of a bunch of guys battling for the one roster spot, or possibly 2 roster spots if LaFrentz is cut. He’s up against a bunch of foreign players as well as:

Luke Jackson – 6-7 former Oregon player who was the 10th pick in the 2004 draft. Averaged 6 ppg last year with Miami.

Steven Hill – rookie 7-0 center out of Arkansas who averaged just 4 ppg for the Hogs.

A more encouraging thing for Shav is that the Blazers passed on signing Shaun Livingston to a contract and instead offered one to Shav. True, Shav’s contract is non-guaranteed while Livingston would be looking for a guaranteed contract. But the Blazers were reportedly very close to signing Livingston before backing away and going to Shav.
