View Full Version : Favorite Devil Mascot "Headbands"
In the "New Blue Devil Mascot" thread, DukeUsul says there's a wall in Card with all the "headband" tape worn by the mascot over the years.
So here's my question: what are the best headband slogans you can remember? (please add year, opponent, and explanation if not immediately obvious...)

Back when I was at Duke, we played Rhode Island in the NCAA's (late 1980's, can't quite remember which year, which in and of itself, is not good!) The Blue Devil sported a chippy headband that said 'End of the Rhode!'

My all-time favorite is "All UCon eat: Fried Huskpuppies"
edit: this was at the '04 FF

Its sad that the only one I remember was from the 93 NCAA tourney first round vs Northern Illinois. "Whats a Saluki?"

Southern Illinois, was there some very subtle point that I missed?

The headband thing ceased to be clever or cute about the 2nd year...after that, it just seemed tired to me.

That a Saluki is a weird, or at least unfamiliar mascot.

I can't remember the year, but it was during the ACC season circa 1999-2002. We were playing Wake Forest in the midweek game, probably on a Wednesday, and the next game was Carolina on Sunday. The headband said "Wake today, funeral Sunday". I thought that was really funny. It's possible that was one of Carolina's down years and the funeral comment was in reference to the Maryland game, but I remember it as Carolina.

Unfortunately, the one that sticks out in my mind was when the mascot wore a Buckwheat headband for Notre Dame's David Rivers, I believe in 1988. That's pretty much the all-time lowlight, but the student did send Rivers a written apology the following week.

The Buckwheat headband was due to the uncanny resemblance of Mr. Rivers' current hairdo to that of Mr. Wheat, and not racial (even though the Devil was a member of Robert E. Lee's fraternity). In fact, I think I remember Rivers posing for a picture with the "O-Tay" sign.
This incident was still fresh the following month when Duke and Notre Dame were both playing in the Dean Dome in the first round of the NCAAs. My companion and I were yelling at the ND coach, using his nickname, which unfortunately rhymes with the N word. We almost got escorted out until we pointed out to the usher that Mr. Phelps didn't go by his given first name.

"1991, 1992,...2001?"
Clearly, that one worked out in our favor...:)
