Obviously it's legal, because they are playing in Canada, according to the front page. But how does that work? I thought the NCAA is pretty strict on coaches interaction in regards to actually coaching the team until that first October practice. I think I recall Duke doing something similar in Australia, but I was fuzzy on that too, and I remember lots of people asking questions. I also didn't think it was this early in the year. Here is the article that they linked to (http://www.wral.com/sports/story/3461404/).

It was a London trip for Duke, prior to the 2002-03 season.

Yup, that was it, thanks. I remember lots of complaints from other teams.

There is a section in the NCAA rulebook (bylaws in sections 17 and 30) that permits a foreign tour once every four years. It must occur during a school vacation period, but it is permissible to have practice sessions prior to the tour and to play up to 10 games on foreign soil, provided the games are not against other US teams (they may be against teams of US service personnel).
