Wisconsin is a pretty good team, with the 16th rated offense and 8th rated defense, combing for 7th overall rating. Brian only gets 48.5% of their minutes (19.4 min), but at 6-11, he gets the most minutes of any big on the team and makes a huge impact while on the floor. He takes 26.5% of the team's shots while on the floor, second only to All American Tucker. More significantly, he pulls down 11.9% of available offensive boards while on the floor (136th in nation) and 25.1% of available defensive rebounds (17th in nation!). He gets to the FT line a great deal, generating fouls, but makes a very mediocre 58.5% of his FTs. He does not turn the ball over much at all and blocks a good number of shots.

The biggest question will be how they fill those nearly 20 minutes per game. The next bigs to get minutes are Chappel, 6-10, with 37.9% of minutes (15 min) and Stiemsma, 6-11, with 21.3% (9 minutes). The other "size" is Tucker at 6-6 and 32 min, Krabbenhoft, 6-7 and 20 min, and Landry, 6-7 and 18 min. Chappel's numbers look a bit like Butch's but he is a more average rebounder and a much better passer. Stiemsma looks more raw, with more TOs but more blocks.

As a team, they rebound well on both sides of the ball. But their offensive success has been relatively highly correlated with offensive rebounding, which will suffer largely without Butch. The Badger's offense may actually improve a touch as he took too many shots given his own relative offensive efficiency, but his number of shots taken could just be a function of put backs. His rebounding will be sorely missed.

Wisconsin will have more worry about personnel than they will about getting off a two-game skid.

The question is-- how much will the selection committee penalize them for this. I think it makes Wisconsin out of the picture when it comes to a #1 seed. If they lose earlier than expected in the Big Ten tourney, it could even potentially cost them a #2... doubtful, but it could happen.

Suddenly, their game with Michigan State this weekend matters a lot more than it once did.

I think they still get a two. Unless they lose to MSU and a first round loss in the Big Televen tourney. Butch's loss will be undervalued by the comittee. I doubt they look at tempo free stats and just see 8.8 points and 5.9 boards per game. On its face, not setting the world on fire, especially with seniors Tucker and Taylor on the team.

I think that one thing that those stats don't get at is that Butch helped stretch the defense a little, as he had a nice outside shot. He was able to provide the rebounding (defensive rebounding was better than offensive because he often guarded in the low post, but was outside on offense) while also avoiding clogging the lane. I don't think that the other bigs will be able to do that. Don't forget, Butch was another of those McDonalds guys...
