Are they waiting for the lightning to hit them in the stands?

Devildeac hasn't been struck; they are admiring the lightning, rain, and general humidity.

I was hiding under a tree by eastgate, but am wandering around now that the rain has stopped.

They need the rain in the Southeast...more on its way late next week.

ArnieMc
08-30-2008, 09:03 PM
End of 1st Quarter. Still 7-7, JMU ball 3rd and 10 on Duke 43 - helped along by a face mask penalty.

dukeballer2294
08-30-2008, 09:06 PM
Not bad Imo for the first quarter, but it seems like we cant stop the run to save our lives. (Also this was asked earlier but how come asack took a snap on 3rd down?

ArnieMc
08-30-2008, 09:10 PM
Asack was QB on the 3rd series.

We got the ball back on downs, drove, and fumbled.

ArnieMc
08-30-2008, 09:18 PM
JMU 3 and out. Duke got one first down, but had to punt. We apparently have a SERIOUS punter.

Lavabe
08-30-2008, 09:19 PM
Weird... we have a punter.

That's a good sign.

Stray Gator
08-30-2008, 09:22 PM
If Bob Harris' call is accurate, it sounds like Thad Lewis has overthrown receivers at least 4 or 5 times tonight. Defense seems to be doing a solid job, though, and our punting has been extraordinary so far.

ArnieMc
08-30-2008, 09:27 PM
JMU 3 and out again. We're driving - mostly on the ground.

Our receivers seem to be missing a few too.

I think James Madison is about on par with Delaware, who Maryland only beat by one score today. Just a guess, but after just one day of the season, we're already climbing the ACC ladder.

Between Virginia getting destroyed by USC, Va Tech going down to ECU, Clemson on the way to losing to Alabama, Carolina struggling against McNeese State, and Maryland struggling against Delaware...it's not been a good day for the ACC so far.

Duke, on the other hand, is probably showing better than most pundits expected.

First, you're at "Grant Hill" -- which answers my original question in a very Taoist way.

it was the fullest I have seen Wallace Wade and i'm a senior and have attended every home game. It was nearly full. It was also "sold out" though they did give many tickets away to employees.

As for the studentes, there were 3-4 full sections of students, my iPhone died partially through the game but before it did I did get one picture of the student sections and I will upload it ASAP.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but with 2 minutes left in the game, cut came over the student section and said the following (and im pretty close to quoting here):

Great win and congrats to the team and Coach Cut. Best I've seen Duke play against anyone in a long, long, long time. For the love of God, at least for one night let's all enjoy this win and have NO negativity. We tend to be harsh on the basketball team after wins half the time. This team and staff deserves a pat on the back and a day or two to savor victory!

Oh and I just wanted to say I can't figure out what was the most impressive.
1. The turnout, especially with storms looming. Lets hope for even bigger crowds next game.
2. The defense getting penetration into the backfield to disrupt and sack.
3. The offense moving the ball about as well as I'd seen them move it since the Spurrier days.

But I'm going to go with.....
4. The kicking game!!! Especially punts! WOW what an improvement.

All of these show what tecnique, dedication and busting pottymouth!pottymouth!pottymouth! can do. Go Blue Devils!

It was fun, I'm glad I went. Sorry I missed everyone. Duke looked pretty good, but they need to shore up a few things before next week's game with Northwestern.

truly, truly amazing game.
Duke looked and acted like they expected to win. As bob said, the locker room was 'satisfied, not giddy.'

great turnout; we had tons of fun. Save those goalposts indeed!

What a great game, I'm really excited I got to be there! Our kicking and running were probably the most exciting to me, because they were the least expected. Really great turnaround. Having a week to rework some things will mean we only look better next week!

As a sidenote, I'd like to pass along a congrats to anyone here who is connected to the marching band. They sounded really good, though I look forward to seeing a larger group of musicians in years to come!

These were from the top of the student section. To the students, you guys were great! And I saw Kyle Singler there joining in, good to see the BBall guys in attendance.

Yep, I saw Singler and Zoubek at the undergrad s***show/tailgate. Zoubek, if I may speculate, was one of the taller undergrads in attendance.

One of the parachutes was black with blue stripes (royal) and the other had green stripes, so at least one of them made sense....why was a guy with a green chute landing in Kenan anyway?

A great punt? By Duke?

I think he averaged over 50 yards/punt tonight with 2 at or over 60 yards:D

If Bob Harris' call is accurate, it sounds like Thad Lewis has overthrown receivers at least 4 or 5 times tonight. Defense seems to be doing a solid job, though, and our punting has been extraordinary so far.

They also dropped 2-3 passes on target for 1st downs. I figure Ted Roof taught them that:o:rolleyes:(jk)

I was just wondering how many people showed up for the game. Does anyone know? Thanks

Heard Bob Harris say after the game that it was about 32,500. (* it was Duke employee night and I think they gave away tix to any employee who showed up for the tailgate dinner they served in front of Card). The crowd was large and the students were loud. It looked like they filled about 2 sections.

Kevin Jones had a 68 yard punt, we didn't allow a single 3rd down conversion, got 200 yards rushing, and made a field goal. Great performance by all units. I would like to see our special teams coverage tighten up, but I think their returner was a pretty good return speciallist, so we'll see how that goes in the future.

I'd like to add...quit dropping the ball! That goes for running backs who fumble and recievers who drop dead on target passes.

Great game, I'm almost too excited to go to sleep...who's ready for Northwestern?

08-31-2008, 01:37 AM
...that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Is anyone else high right now? I mean a good old-fashioned Duke football induced high? For some reason, I don't feel like going to sleep. I was *very* impressed by the number of people who showed up for the game tonight. Sure, it's true that a good number of free tickets were given to employees, etc. but the first one's always free :D - you've got to get 'em hooked :p

My sincerest congrats to Coach Cut and the team for a convincing win over what's supposed to be a very good JMU team. However, they obviously don't need to be reminded that the schedule only gets tougher at this point. From what I saw tonight though, I have no reason to believe that this team can't build on what they've started. Now, continue the hard work and let's find out how many ways there are to skin a 'Cat.

Go Devils!!

Top 25 vote from Spurrier?

Interesting that you mention this, and I was surprised that nobody mentioned this before now (at least I didn't see it in any of the football threads)... Spurrier either must not be voting in the Coaches poll this season, or he forgot to give Duke a vote... Not a big deal, but I always get a kick out of seeing that first Coaches' poll of the year with Duke listed as having 1 vote...

He was asked by the coaches' association to stop giving Duke a vote on the first ballot to "protect the integrity of the poll."

That picture is of the scoreboard that's been in place for a few years now (unless they replaced it with one that looked just like the other one.) The new scoreboard was the small one in the closed end of the horseshoe showing the basics.

Good for Spurrier, good for us.

Let's earn that vote-and more

Let's earn the right to tear down the goal posts for major victories/milestones/championships. As Cut apparently told/asked the students last PM-let's act like we've been there before.

Last evening was a wonderful start. What an atmosphere at WW, even with a 45-50 minute rain delay and potentially dangerous weather and after a modest # of folks left-this time to wander the CROWDED concourse-only to return as it became obvious the game would be played.

Actually, I started a thread about this when it didn't happen. I believe I called it "Another sign of respect", or something like that. Glad to see that Stevie Visor called the Chronicle reporter and explained why he didn't vote for Duke and that he is rooting for us in EVERY game we play this season.

Men's rooms were unchanged, although cleaner, which is a big improvement. According to Devil in the Blue Dress, the women's portable accommodations were much smaller than those used at the reunions and were a waste of money.

That's rich. Know what else would "protect the integrity of the poll"? Coaches disclosing their votes every week. Hell, coaches actually doing their own voting every week rather than farming it out an assoc. AD. But that wouldn't make sense, either, since coaches don't have time to actually, you know, watch anybody else's games.

Too...many...contradictions. Head...is...spinning.

That guy in green was Coach Cut's backup plan. He was to lay down and camoflage himself with the grass, then trip up any JMU player who got through the secondary.

Agreed on all of the above. I actually thought of Coach K speaking to the students the night before carolina games when he would ask that we act like we've been there before if we won. When I saw Coach Cut speaking to the students last night, it occurred to me that most of them hadn't been there before, but were willing to take a leap of faith with Coach Cut. That was awesome.

It's amazing how many fans stick their head out after a win. It was a nice effort all the way around. I hope to see as many fans at the NU game.

After a ton of coverage leaning into the game and the event itself, I sort of hit the wall today. Anyhow, here is an article I just put up which talks of the Blue Devils Walk, fans and more. A few pics too.

When your team loses what, 32 of its last 33 games, I can fully understand the desire to do some celebrating. Cut's take on it is fine, but the students' desire to cut loose is pretty logical to me.

An excellent start to a new era. I have never enjoyed sitting through a thunderstorm so much, and once I bought a new shirt and bagged the drenched one I showed up in, I got to see a very prepared football team execute well in most all phases of the game. One note to anyone with connections to the PA Announcers. After the announcement at 7:30 that the game would start at 8:15, they never gave another update. The weather got worse and right around 8:15 or so, it appeared that the game would be post-poned.. Several people left thinking just that and likely would have stayed if updates would have been given..

But man what a game!! I could not have been more impressed. Kicking game, running game, defense, offense, all looked solid. I saw several games last year and it is just no comparison. I am keeping it in perspective given the opponent, but this was a great start. Cannot wait to get there this Saturday! I hope attendance grows and stays strong throughout the year as the guys deserve our support! All in all it was the best start we could have hoped for!

Go Duke!

Not sure if this has been brought up previously in another thread, but... James Madison is currently the #1 team in the FCS Coaches Poll (I-AA). JMU is 8-1 on the season and has held the top spot in the polls since week 4.

I think this says great things for Coach Cutcliffe and the Duke football team. Congrats on a great season so far, Blue Devils. Let's kick some Wolfpack butt this weekend!

Go DUKE!!! :)
