Thirty nine years. A Durham institution. Several conversations with the man at Devine's have lent me a perspective that I cherish a bit more now. He was ready to go the last few years. The changing of the guard at the paper wore on him.
But there were certain Sundays in the Fall where Frank's column really helped me get through another drudgery of a Sunday. His column was one of the few bright spots in what has become a joke of a paper. I'll echo Coach K's comments about missing his byline.
I look forward to more "sound byte" conversations with Frank where I will mention an event and he will say "April '91. Every play down the stretch was back and forth. Huge momentum swings. Then Hurley hit the biggest shot in Duke's basketball history".
But man, I'll miss his column. Arrevederci, Frank.
