Amanda is kicking butt at the US Women's Amateur Open! After 2 days of stroke play, she was ahead of all the field. Yesterday, she played 1 round of match play, winning 2 & 1. Today, she played 2 rounds, winning the 1st match 4 & 3 and the 2nd match 7 & 6! She plays tomorrow at 11:20 pdt. Keep at look out for her status at www.uswamateur.org. The Golf Channel will be showing some of the play from 4-6 edt.

Let's all root for Amanda to start her senior season at Duke with a huge win!

Great job to date. Keep up the good work. She has been characterized by the announcers as the "face of women's amateur golf" in the US.

Great publicity for the Duke program as well as the University. The announcers are extremely complimentary of her, the school and Coach Brooks. Amanda is wearing her Duke cap and carrying her Duke bag. One can not "buy" this type of publicity.

Amanda won 4-3 over one of the ubiquitous Spanish women and will play an American tomorrow in the semis.

The other semi is between two other Spanish women golfers. (One of whom slaughtered co-medalist Stephanie Na from Aussieland, 7-6.)

Go Amanda!

Amanda is playing in the semifinals now; coverage on the Golf Channel (4-6PM Eastern). She is one down thru 8. Doesn't look too sharp so far; not hitting fairways.

Amanda is 1 down to 15 year old phenom, Erynne Lee after 8 holes. It's on the Golf Channel now.

With her cameo interviews, her Duke cap and bag, and mentions of both her bright profeesional fure and her current GPA, Duke is getting some terrific exposure. Amanda's is a great representative!

Amanda 1-up after 31 holes. Great match.

The commentators have mentioned Duke repeatedly and referred to Coach K, basketball and Amanda as a Cameron Crazie. She has a 3.78 GPA in History, likes chips & salsa, hates chocolate, but loves mint chocolate chip ice cream. In her Ipod would be Frankie Valli and Rascal Flatts. Her boyfriend is a baseball player. She is very close to all her family and loves Duke and the whole college experience at Duke, even when she's had to use a community bathroom with 20 other girls. They have mentioned how balanced and grounded a person she is.

Dan Brooks alluded to how the recruitment of Amanda started, and how easy and enjoyable it was. He was first made aware of Amanda when he "heard" a ball being struck at high school event....he looked up to see who hit it. The rest is history.

Yes! Amanda wins the USGA Amateur on the 35th hole.

Another championship in a career that ranks her in the very top group of all-time Duke athletes.

I agree. SWEET!!!

She, as well as the rest of the golf team, are, as my grandsons say, awesome. I would like to challenge all the posters here as well as all those who followed Amanda over the last week. Please log on to GoDuke.com and check out the schedule for 2008/2009. If the team plays anywhere near you, please come out and support them. Having done so, I can attest to how appreciative they are of anyone wearing Duke Blue.

Again, Congratulations Amanda. You do make us so proud.

Is Amanda Blumenhurst Duke's greatest student-athlete ever?

That's quite a distinction, but may be true.

Interesting question and distinction, roywhite. Not sure what the student-athlete criteria and overall weighting should be, but Amanda gets my vote as at least a finalist with her total resume. It might be interesting to research the academic awards (All-America scholar-athletes, etc.) of our great ones and make a Top Ten list.
