Notre Dame extends Mike Brey's contract through 2015

But still pretty good considering they did it with 5 years remaining on the old contract.

Someone smarter than me needs to explain why either side bothers taking a contract that ends way in the future and extends it even further into the future. Generally, when I see this kind of thing happen, I make a mental note of how soon the coach is either fired or takes a new/better job.

In this case, I guess I just have a hard time imagining how/why ND's athletic department is worrying about its head basketball coach in the year 2014. Shouldn't 2008 football be a bigger priority? Or getting QB Jimmy Clausen a decent haircut?

Of course, congratulations to Coach Brey. I'm on the record predicting Notre Dame not only makes the 2009 Final Four, but wins the whole thing. So if that happens, maybe ND is saving some money long-term.
