Perhaps it's a lack of new exhibits that has hurt them. :p

When I was in Lexington two years ago, I visited the museum. It was very impressive. I even paid $9 (?) to take a guided tour of the adjacent Rupp Arena.
The best part of the tour was this:
According to its Web site, the museum featured interactive exhibits giving fans the chance to make a radio call of a great UK moment, or play "virtual one-on-one" hoops against a favorite Wildcat. I did my best Christain Laettner impersonation :D, which really ticked off those around me :D :D
