It is sad that things did not work out for him as well as was expected. One report I read seems to indicate there was some other interest in him, so we will see whether he will play for another team in Europe or if he tries the D-League route again.

There are two Euroleague quarterfinal games on ESPN3 this week. On Wednesday, Montepaschi Siena and Olympiakos Piraeus start at 3:45pm Eastern. On Thursday, FC Barcelona and UNICS Kazan start at 3:45pm Eastern.

I'm still very surprised Jon didn't find instant success in the Levant. Anyone have any insight on why he couldn't seem to crack the rotation? Did he have too much competition for PT at his position? Or was the level of play in Israel just too strong? Maybe nagging eye issues? I hope it was only the first...

I can't pretend to know much about the quality of play in Israel, but I will say that Jon has been consistently underrated in large part because what he does isn't flashy. Even Coach K and the Duke staff took a while to realize how incredible the offense could be with Jon in charge. He was a bit streaky as a shooter, which probably doesn't help him earn playing time in the professional ranks. However, I think a team has to really buy into what Jon can bring to the table. Hopefully he'll find that team soon.

It looks like their coach mainly played veterans.

I wouldn't say that the coach mainly played veterans. Most of Jon's competition was around his age or a little bit older and in the prime of their careers.

I would say that if there are any coaches out there who would appreciate Jon, it would definitely be Coach Blatt at Maccabi Tel Aviv (he also coaches the Russian National Team). I think Jon's style and skills do not necessarily translate to any prototypical role, but I think on a team where he is one of the most talented players where he is allowed to have the ball in his hands a lot, I think he could really flourish. It would probably be a little bit of a paycut and he would not have been able to visit so many different countries in Europe though.

At first he had trouble cracking the rotation because of the competition and because he was a little bit short on professional level experience. Once he did get a couple of opportunities, he was not particularly productive and his team actually went out and brought in two more guards to bolster their backcourt.

I think that eye injury was pretty serious. Something like that can affect your shooting enough to keep you from being good enough
to play (see Bobby Hurley car accident). Don't know if he'll ever be quite what he was at Duke.

    Scheyer

I wouldn't say Jon Scheyer was "released." That makes it sound like he was cut. According to this article, Jon decided to leave on his own and Maccabi granted the request:

    http://www.eurobasket.com/Israel/bas...?NewsID=264464

'Jon's request to leave was a mixture of many things,' one source said. 'Nearly three months ago, while sitting out most of the team's games, Asefa Estudiantes of the Spanish ACB League, asked to buy Jon out, but Maccabi refused. Not only was Jon disappointed, he was also upset.'
Another source told Eurobasket, 'Jon's leave was caused by a combination of not playing, latest rocket attacks towards Israel from the Gaza Strip and the Israeli military pressuring him to join.'
His Israeli agent refuted the Israeli military pressuring Jon to join part, though. Hope he finds success wherever his talents take him next!

I don't think anyone has the same expectations of him as he was pre-injury, but his time in the D-League seemed to indicate that he could be at least a solid professional player at a level below the NBA.

Yes, the official term in European sports parlance is that his contract was terminated by mutual consent. It was pretty similar to a release in the sense that his team was not willing to wait to see if they could get another team to pay them to sign him and they were willing to let him go near the stretch run of the season to save on some salary. It is similar to the situation that DeMarcus Nelson faced in Ukraine earlier in the season and then he ended up back in France a week or two later although DeMarcus was getting plenty of playing time and the team was just trying to shuffle things around with their rotation and payroll.

So far, there are 3 Euroleague games set for ESPN3 this week. I am not sure if there will be more added later in the week given that there are two series which may not have a Game 4 later in the week.

On Tuesday, Barcelona goes for the sweep in Russia as they face UNICS Kazan at 12:00pm Eastern. At 2:45pm Eastern, Jon-less Maccabi Tel Aviv hosts Panathinaikos as both teams look to gain the upper-hand. One Game 4 will be shown as Friday's game in Greece between Olympiakos and Montepaschi Siena is set for 2:45pm Eastern.

  16. #156
ESPN3 will be having one more Game 4 on Thursday as Maccabi Tel Aviv will try to close out Panathinaikos and reach the Final Four at 3:05pm Eastern.

Friday will still have Olympiakos try to close Montepaschi Siena at 2:45pm Eastern.

There were not a lot of former Duke players in action in midweek so the next update will cover the entire week.

    Shav

    Hey everyone-

I've been following the boards almost daily since midway through the HWNSNBM recruitment and really appreciate the classy discussion generated here. I've never registered until now because I've always had much much more to glean than add Anyways I saw this article (haven't seen it posted anywhere else on here) about Shav getting some work outs with the Heat. It also says he is talking with other clubs. I always hoped Shav would find his way back to the NBA. He's a great player who has been held back by a lot of injuries. He had hip surgery about a year ago I believe and seems he has done quite will in China. His personal basketball coach is my best friend's dad...and I must admit I haven't picked his brain as much as I should...but it seems that there is optimism he can get back in the NBA. Here's to getting another Dukie in the NBA...best of luck to Shav:
